The theater district was quiet in the middle of the afternoon, but once the sun went down the streets would became flooded with the patrons of the arts out for an evening of cultured entertainment. Billboards announcing shows like Mama Mia, We Will Rock You and Phantom of the Opera filled the street, the bright neons that would light up the night now lay dormant.

Off the main drag sat a smaller theater, it lacked the flash and flare that the others had and the old playbill showed a single performance, 'Magic Show'.

Inside the lobby with it's worn out red carpets and polished brass railings a man in his late twenties paced back and forth. He stood just over six feet tall with a shaggy head of sandy colored hair and blue eyes. He was leanly built and dressed simply, a pair of black slacks with a vest and dress shirt, his sleeves rolled up. Nick Sharpe scowled and came to a stop, his foot falls muted by the plush carpet, and looked down at his watch. He had called the agency yesterday after the last girl they had sent over had gotten cold feet and quit and they had promised him someone there by nine the next morning. He knew he was being paranoid, there was still the better part of an hour before the new assistant was due in. So he needed to stop pacing and settle the hell down. But he always got the jitters when he had to break in a new assistant.

This was the sixth assistant they had to send him. The first two had freaked out the moment they had met his lighting tech and went running out of the theater before the show had even started leaving him to perform the show on his own that night. The third one had turned out to be sent by the amazing Finni to spy on him and learn his secrets. Nick seldom liked having to use his talents to re write someone's brain, but in her case he had no other choice. Finni was a hack who would very quickly end up getting himself, and anyone around him killed if he tried to make use of the kinds of tricks that Nick did.

The forth one had fared well enough. He had hoped she would be the one to stick around, but after a month on the job she end up possessed during an exorcism that didn't go exactly the way he had planned on it. She had been so rattled by the experience that she quit after he had gotten the demon dislodged from her. Last he had heard she had joined a convent and was now a nun.

Number five had looked promising, she had been fairly claim upon meeting the crew, had a good laugh at the stage costume and said she had worn worse during her days working as a stripper. But the moment she set foot on the stage she froze. Something that seemed odd to him for someone who had once taken her clothes off in front of strangers but there wasn't a whole lot he could do about it.

Another quick glance down at his watch and he let out a sigh of frustration. Not really any thing in particular but this was a big source of annoyance for him right now that he wanted to be done with so he could focus on the show at hand.

Victoria sighed as she looked at the map, not too used to this part of town. She wouldn't be living in this town at all if it hadn't been for her schooling, an a whole lot of good that did. Someone like her, a college graduate with a bachelor in Behavioral Sciences, reduced to a mere apprentice to some so-called magician. At least the pay was good?

At the tender but mature age of 23, Victoria Reyes was at the peak of her life, or so tv cared to show her. She had soft, caramel colored skin and short, curly brown hair that she often considered the bane of her existence, but she'd somehow managed to tame with plenty of hair gel and other products. No one said beauty had to be easy and for a job like this nothing but beauty mattered. Victoria, or Vicky as her friends called her, stood at an average 5'5, her bright green eyes her most distinguishing feature along with a few sprinkled freckles. Her clothes were pretty average, some jeans and a tight tank top to show just enough of her assets to get the job, though she was sure that they would be far more revealing in no time.

She found herself face to face with the building, 10 minutes early from her appointed time, and sighed. "Come on, Vic, you can do this, its only temporary..." she said to herself, knocking on the back door to the theater. With a louder, more confident voice she yelled, "Hey, your new assistant is here!"

The pounding at the door drew Nick back to the real world from his thoughts about how this show was going to end up as mess and he quickly crossed to the door, pulling it open so hard it nearly came right off the hinges. His gaze fell on the woman standing in the street, instantly accessing her. "Too short...." he muttered, "The heels should help with that." Another passing glance over her, "And you're boobs are bigger than the last girl." She was hardly ideal for what he had wanted but she would have to do. He had two hours to get her ready for the show.

"Alright new girl, come along, we have a lot to do and not much time." He turned sharply on his heels and striding away, oblivious to if she was following him or not. He had too much on his mind to worry about before the show stated. A series of lights descending the stairs and following behind him, "Yeah, guys, I'm gong to need you for final for today's show, school group today so we need to keep things as flashy as we can."
