I do hope this is not presumptuous, but I think that with a thread about overrated movies, we should delve into one about underrated ones, and here it is. I do hope that all will contribute, and the ?? above in the title are because some may dispute those that are put up here and they are free to do so within reason.

I think as a good starting example, that the movie Mom and Dad Save The World is a very underrated and superb parody of Flash Gordon films and other "space opera" themed movies.

OH, TUCKER AND DALE VERSUS EVIL!

I thought it was just gonna be some standard rednecks and teens murder porn.

Surprisingly well written and actually pretty fuckin hilarious. not at ALL what I was expecting.

Totally agree with the thread idea and Tucker and Dale versus Evil, I thought that was a great film and what I really loved about it was the message that a rough bad looking person isn't always a rough bad person.

I'll throw in 'Dolores Claiborne'. The movie isn't that well known as far as I'm aware but I think it's the second best adaption of a Stephen King work after 'Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption'. It's pretty much a two person character drama.

Good ones so far. I approve of them and have supporting comments but in general I agree with what you have put so far.

Two adaptions that I see as underrated are The Illusionest and (as it was mentioned) Shawshank Redemption. Many think that the latter is giving its props, but in my view it has yet to be given the just due it deserves.

Ichi the Killer.

Not very well known, as it's based off a manga, but... I hear good things. have yet to see it, because the day I finish the manga, Netflix decides to remove it off it's listings. Yay....

But still.

You're lucky, the movie is not very good. Just go read the plot on wiki, if it still interests you then watch it; but I don't think you'll like the departure in the ending.

My own vote goes to Barbarella, love that movie.

No one lives.

I'm a horror fanatic and I believe that movie was underrated to some degree. I think the story was pretty engaging. And even though the dialogue was trash, that killer's catch phrases were vicious and so was his way of doing things. I also liked the fact that it wasn't just some random hacking/slashing film. He had an actual solid reason. I just wish there could be a nice deliciously crafted prequel to his story. That guy was a serious mystery... I loved how he really had no name. XD

Red Cliff. The international bersion, not the Theatrical version. It's 5 hours long, but holy crap- easily the best movie based on the War of the 3 Kingdoms hands down.

Rites of Spring. I didn't expect much from this movie but its a great little indy horror film with modern sensibilities but with a 70's feel.

And seeing Ichi the Killer let me add Audition. Same wonderful director. Is carefully crafted to be almost plain and boring when it suddenly ramps it up to crazy, hallucinogenic and disturbing as hell.

Tucker and Dale vs Evil most definitely.

and I would say Grave of the Fireflies and Grave Encounters.

the first is harsh, brutal and painfully emotional, the second is eery, scary and VERY well paced.

Grave Encounters 2 however is a steaming dump on the franchise and ruins both itself and the first one.
