Lady Fate is a fickle woman… More so than the common mortal might think. With Her strands interwoven with reality as they are, she can easily do as she pleases, setting off chains of events that can send a righteous man to a brothel and cause a black-hearted penny-pincher to reconsider their life with a simple dismissive flick of her wrist… Or just the opposite with a small, intoxicating smile.

The Shrouded Ones are but a few of the strands among the many at Her beck and call. Most think of these beings only as the Grim Reapers, but their job is actually far more complicated. They are more like… farmers, rather than the ghoulish harvesters many believe them to be. They sow the souls they will later reap, and protect them from the vermin that would otherwise devour them.

Still, their job is, more often than not, quite somber… Grim, even, as humans are often apt to call it. This is because, most often, it is simply a fact that they are called upon to reap the life of one that they helped guide into the world, that they fought so hard to protect, before a they have spent long at all in their mortal coil... Without even being told what Fate held in store for them after death. This was the decision Fate seemingly bestowed upon one of the Shrouded Ones and his charge… A young woman he thought knew rather well, and had grown rather fond of in a sort of paternal sense.

He sat above her home in the black cloak his kind was known for, carrying the cane that shepherded souls too… and from… their mortal bodies. Some took to the reaping part of their job more…readily than he, and thus carried a scythe… but he did not relish this part of his calling. It was bad enough that he’d have to use his cane again so soon on this pretty young woman after a mere decade or two. He sighed and shrugged. “‘Tis not my place to question it, is it?” He wondered aloud, then jumped down through his target’s roof.

Her room… Or was it an apartment? The names of these living arrangements always escaped him... Whatever it was, was on the top floor, so he did not have to descend far at all to reach her in her quarters. He noticed that something felt odd once he touched down on the floor behind her, but paid it no mind for now… instead, he simply waited for his cue to take her away, his gnarled cane resting over his shoulder, ready to spirit her away when the time came.

The young woman was completely obvious to the event that was about to unfold and cause her unfortunate demise. Although her apartment had no other living souls inside of it she wasn't alone. The girl had just turned 23 and seemed to be a healthy young lady with no real reason why her death would come so quickly in her few years as an adult. Perhaps Lady Fate was being cruel to this woman who has done no wrong and still withheld her innocence. She was the last known member of hee family and spend so many days alone having friends were rare for her.

Friends were hard to come by for her since she was considered...odd compared to other humans. She had a strong fixation on death for some reason it intrigued her. How some die naturally, calm and peaceful in their beds and others that die more gruesomely. It always baffled her that some people got to suffer while others didn't. It was like everything was already planned out. They were nothing more then puppets and someone, somewhere, was pulling the strings.

This night she had the window of her room opened up. Her curtains blowing softly in the breeze. She stared up at the beautiful full moon with it's light shining down upon her like a spotlight. It made her long raven black hair, soft as silk, shine as it blew softly from the night wind. Her skin looked as white as snow which complimented her sapphire blue eyes that sparkled like gems. The long white nightgown that could've been mistaken as a simple dress followed the thin abnd hourglass curved body she was gifted with. She was truly a sight to behold.

After what seemed like hours of staring up at the night sky, the young girl turned away and grabbed a brush from her table to brush her raven hair with her back toward the window. A music box with the name "Emilee" written in beautiful writing sat where her brush once was. This was her name and the music box was all tjat she had left of her mother. Feeling a chill run down her spine she turned to where the Grim Reaper stood. Though she saw nothing, a cold uneasy feeling washed over her, but assuming it was the open window she walked right through the Reaper to close it. Then she moved to sit on her bed and finish brushing her hair to get ready for bed.

That odd sensation that permeated the room only intensified when the girl walked through him. The fact that mortals could pass through his incorporeal "body" had never really bothered him. It was, after all, just a natural part of his existence... However, when he touched certain things, Lady Fate would often allow him a glimpse at the time they had left... and this girl still had time left on the mortal plane. Yet... she was to die, for no discernible reason.

"Curious..." He said in his deep, emotionless voice. He contemplated simply... leaving her, letting her continue her life as Fate had clearly planned... but obviously, Fate wanted him to take the girl, else she wouldn't have led him here... And going against Fate was akin to blasphemy, and thus unthinkable to one of Hers. At least... it should have been unthinkable. And yet, strangely enough, he found the thought, the desire to do disobey, was tempting him.

"Very curious..." He growled... though his thoughts nearly led him to miss the fact that she'd practically looked right at him. Were his pale face visible from under his dark hood, a soul freed of its body might have seen one of his eyebrows twitch. This woman... He was now sure (more or less) that Lady Fate was teasing him with her... Testing him for his resolve to do his job. She would no doubt return the poor soul to her body after he brought her to the Lady, and that was why he saw what he saw... but something still felt out of place.

Then he realized what it was. One of the "vermin" he was to protect these souls from was nearby... in a corporeal manifestation. Shrouded ones can't interact with the physical world and maintain their invisibility to mortal eyes at the same time. Being seen was taboo... but this girl was meant to die, and he was meant to protect her soul from the "vermin" who would steal it from her...

When the door opened, he instantly materialized behind her and said "Child. Something comes to steal your soul. Stay behind me, lest it succeed." on the balcony outside of her apartment stood a creature that should only exist in nightmares. It looked like the unholy spawn of a spider, moth, and snake, imposed upon the the pale form, gaunt form of a poor unfortunate... though the child likely only saw the "body" the creature had possessed. The Shrouded One hefted his stave, and the end of the gnarled shaft uncoiled, revealing a floating light. "Begone demon." He growled.

Naturally, it didn't listen, instead lunging for the girl like the mindless beast it was.

For some reason Emilee always got chills and a uneasy feeling when something wasn't right. Whenever something or someone was watching her it was like a sixth sense. Maybe that's why she was so interested in the supernatural, because she'll get the feeling of being watched, but never knew why. Although she didn't see the Reaper that was in the room with her she somehow felt his eyes staring at her.

The voice of a man fightened her and caused her to jump up from her bed. The man that suddenly appeared in her room and backed up against the wall. Who was he? Why was he here? How did he get here? She made a confused look when he told her to get behind him seeing no reason to and the fact she didn't know him made her question why he wanted that. "Who are you!? What do you want!?" She asked in fear mostly because she had no idea how he got into her room without her knowing it.

The creature that came from her balcony was a even more unpleasant sight to see. It looked like something she would see in a horror movie or a night terror. Seeing the creature she was frozen in fear, not knowing rather to run or trust the man that suddenly appeared. Before she even realized it the monster lunged at her at that moment she thought her life would come to an end.
