Jade climbed back over the hill towards home after spending all morning picking wild blackberries. She wore a simple pale blue dress over black leggings and boots, a wicker basket overflowing with blackberries clutched in her hands as she walked. The sun glinted off her red hair as she paused at the top of the hill behind their farm, squinting deep green eyes at the dozens of people spread out across her father's land.

She hurried down the hill and hid behind the large pear tree near the barn. She'd never seen so many horses and men before. Even in the town she rarely saw more than a handful of people at the same time. Her tongue flicked out against her lower lip and she dashed over to the barn to keep out of sight, breathing in the familiar scent of hay and horses. She patted the star on her mare's forehead on her way down the aisle, slipping out the back door and hurrying across to the back door of her home.

"Papa, I'm back. I'll start dinner now," she called, glancing out the mesh screen of the door to see if anyone had followed her before latching it. "What are all these people doing here?" she asked, turning to set the basket of berries on the kitchen table.
