Golden Shields ( Katy1008 & CrimsonMaster )

Once they were both cleaned, Rick turned the water off the opened the shower door. He stepped from the shower grabbing a towel then turned around. He waited until Evie had followed before he wrapped the towel around her wet hair. Rick took a second towel which he used to dry Evie's body with. After Rick was dried, he took Evie's hand and they walked back into the bedroom. " Would you like to stop somewhere and get a bite to eat? " Rick asked, but before Evie could answer, his cell phone started to ring. He sighed with reaching for his coat, Rick pulled the chirping phone from the right hand outside pocket. " Yes Natasha?.......Everything is quite all right......I was detained by an old friend. " Rick said while giving Evie a playful wink. " Yes we'll be leaving soon........We'll be playing taxi tonight for my friend and a friend of hers.......We'll also be stopping for something to eat before taking my friend home.......About 10 minutes......We're still dressing. " Rick said as he hung up his phone then placed it back into his coat.

Rick started to get dressed, while he did he explained to Evie who Natasha was. As it turned out, Natasha was his driver and head of security. Rick said that even though he wasn't a crime boss anymore, there were many people who would still like too see him dead. While he & Evie continued to dress, Rick told her about his personal security force. Once Rick became a crime boss in LA, he knew that he needed an inner core of people to protect him. Most crime bosses use the 10 time losers who only care about money and don't much care who pays them. Rick wasn't gonna let some street punk knock him off and take what he had built. He remember reading once that the female of the species is more deadly than the male. This gave Rick the idea to make his inner circle, those who protect him an all female group. Rick hired and trained the best and most fit females he could find. This group consisted of 6 women and they called themselves the Femme Fatales. As the original group grew older, then hand picked and trained new younger members to take their place. This new group is headed up by the daughter of one of Rick's original Femme Fatales.

Natasha's mother had been the group leader when the group first started and now that leadership roll fell upon Natasha. Each of the girls was trained in armed and unarmed combat. There wasn't anything that they wouldn't do for Rick Reed. But as Rick told Evie, with the Femme Fatales it was all business, he didn't sleep with those girls. Rick & Evie soon left the bedroom and headed downstairs. The party had broken up and only Jenny & Lewis were left. Rick thanked Lewis for the invite to the party then he told Jenny that he would take her home in his limo. Jenny gave Evie a sly smile thinking that Evie had scored a hunky rich man. Jenny accepted Rick's offer then the three left for Rick's limo. Jenny had no idea who this man really was. She had of course heard of Richard Reed, but Jenny never saw a picture of him. There was no way Jenny would ever know that this man and Evie's partner were father & son.

Rick and the girls left Lewis's house, Rick had his arm wrapped around Evie waist as they walked. Natasha was waiting out front standing near the rear door of the limo. She was just a bit taller then Evie, with short red hair which hung down from the black cap she was wearing. Natasha was dressed in mostly black from head to toe. She was wearing a black suit coat, black tie, a very short black skirt, black shoes and a white dress shirt. Natasha tipped her cap and opened the rear passenger side door. " Evie.......This is Natasha.......My driver and head of my security. " Rick introduced the two woman as Natasha bowed her head slightly to Evie. Jenny slipped into the back followed by Rick then Evie. Natasha closed the door then placed a finger to her ear. " I've got the boss back in the car......We're playing taxi......stopping for something too eat then we'll be heading home. " Natasha said as she walked around the car then jumped in. A voice on the other end of Natasha's radio said okay and they were tracking the car. Natasha asked where they would be going first? Jenny looked at Rick then looked towards Natasha. She told Natasha her address then the limo slipped off into the night.

Evie enjoyed the shower; in fact it had been one of the most enjoyable showers she had had in a long time. She always liked sharing a shower with a guy but usually there was very little room and it wasn’t the easiest of things to do. This particular shower however was substantial in size and there was easily plenty of room of the pair of them. She had spent almost the entire time in there with her hands on his body, washing and caressing and soaping and rinsing. And as she did so, she had kissed his chest and his shoulders. Maybe it was his age, his reputation, or maybe his physical presence which was so much more than one might otherwise expect from a man of Rick’s age but there was something reassuring about being with him; he gave her a feeling of security and safety when usually she was the one providing that to others in her job and outside it, truth be told she could certainly take care of herself better than most of the men she had been with before could. Even if it was just for a few hours, Rick’s presence put her into a position she was rarely in and she like it. She liked how he wrapped her hair when she stepped out of the shower and how he dried her off before wrapping her in the warm towel and then leading her back into the bedroom. While they had been in the shower, someone had brought her clothes through from the other room and had laid them on the bed. She turned to answer his question and then stopped herself while he answered his cell phone.

She couldn’t help but smile when she heard him say that they would be stopped for something to eat, even though she hadn’t answered his question; but it really didn’t matter. She was going to tell him that she would like that very much. After he had ended the call and was starting to tell Evie about Natasha and his security arrangements, she wondered for a moment whether she was making a mistake here. This was a crime boss. This was the father of her partner for God’s sake and here she was... just having let him fuck her... still wanting to be with him... to spend time with him. And all that after he had watched two other men and one woman fuck her.... knowing that she was getting paid for it... that she was by any other name whoring. But by the time Rick had finished explaining, they were both dressed and Rick was wrapping his arm around her waist and leading her back out and down the stairs... and she didn’t want it any other way. Jenny and Lewis were waiting at the bottom of the stairs, and Evie couldn’t avoid seeing both of their looks. These three people all knew what she was and she knew that there was a potential risk for her because of that. But their smiles at that time didn’t seem to indicate anything. She said good night to Lewis, with him thanking her, kissing her on the cheek and saying that he hoped he might be able to call on her services again some time.

“The Yankee slut was a big hit” he said, making Evie blush as Jenny and Rick both laughed and Rick tightened his grip around her waist a little more. Once outside, Evie said hello to Natasha and then climbed into the back of the limo after Jenny and Rick. As she climbed in, Rick had stretched out his arm so once seated, it was wrapped around her waist again and he tugged her gently towards him and held her close. She heard Jenny give her address and then as the car slipped away, Jenny leaned forward and handed Evie an envelope.

“There you go.”

“What is...”

“Its $10,000! Can you believe it? I told you...”

Evie shook her head. “I can’t...”

“Sure you can... you earned it.” Jenny reached over Rick and put her hand on Evie’s thigh. “You earned it.”

“I just cant... You take it.”

“WHAT? You... you can’t just give me $10 grand.”

“I... I just did... or... give it to April.”

The money that Jenny handed to Evie was her cut of the amount Lewis paid to have the girls at his place, plus tips from those that Evie left very happy. Jenny stopped for a moment when Evie suggested that her cut go to Amber. After all, Amber would have been working that party and not Evie if she wasn't laid up in the hospital recovering from Bolin's attack. Jenny agreed that Evie's share would go to Amber. It would help Amber pay those hospital bills which were piling up. Jenny also knew that it wouldn't look good for any police officer to be dropping that kind of money into their bank accounts. She had grown close to Evie during their time together and Jenny didn't want too see Evie getting into trouble. Jenny did make one request which was that Evie give Amber the money herself. Amber already knew about the job and that Evie was covering for her.

Natasha pulled the black limo over in front of Jenny's apartment building. Jenny thanked Evie for everything she had done tonight and it was added that she wouldn't forget Evie's kindness. Jenny left the limo which pulled away as she walked into her apartment building. Rick told Natasha to drive to Hollywood Community Hospital were Amber was staying. It wasn't a long drive from Jenny's place to the hospital. Once there Evie & Rick both went in and visited Amber. Evie gave the large sum of money to Amber, but at first Amber didn't want it. She like Jenny had felt that Evie earned it, but Rick told Amber that Evie couldn't be caught with an amount that large. If IA even started an investigation on Evie, one of the first things they would do was look at her bank records. Dropping such a huge amount into Evie's account would bring on questions that Evie wouldn't want. Amber agreed and took the money from Evie. She thanked Evie for her help, then Evie & Rick left Amber's room.

Evie & Rick quickly returned to Natasha and the waiting limo. Rick told Natasha to head for the Diamond Club and the limo slipped off into the darkness. The Diamond Club was an exclusive night club and restaurant in Beverly Hills. It was so exclusive that if you didn't have a bank account which was at least in 8 figures, you didn't get passed the front doors. Rick was of course a card carrying member since his bank account was well passed 8 figures. Natasha pulled the limo up to the front doors of the club just as a doorman rushed over opening the rear door. Rick stepped out then he turned and held his hand out for Evie. " Good evening Mr. Reed.......It's good too see you again Sir. " The older doorman said while tipping his hat. He was looking at Rick until Evie stepped from the car. A slight moan could easily be heard coming from the doorman once his eyes saw Evie and the dress she was wearing. " My driver will take care of the car. " Rick said as he handed the doorman a $20 dollar bill. He then wrapped his arm around Evie's arm and walked with her into the club.

Evie & Rick were greeted by the club's maître d' who started stumbling over his words of welcome after seeing Evie's hot dress. He then escorted Evie & Rick to a table and left their menus. Normally, Evie couldn't eat here on what a cop makes, but she didn't have to worry about that....Rick was taking care of her. Rick ordered a bottle of Dom Perignon 53 from their waiter. The Champagne was quickly brought to their table and opened. The waiter poured the fine wine into glasses then Rick lifted his into the air. " Too the finest woman I have met in a very long time. " Rick offered his toast to Evie herself.

As the car drove from the hospital to the Diamond club, Evie enjoyed the feel of Rick's arm around her, the feel of his body hard against hers. She sank a little deeper into the seat, into his embrace, feeling more relaxed than she had in a very long time. As Rick's hand rested on her hip, so her's rested on his thigh just above his knee. They didn't say anything on the journey; there was nothing to say and they both seemed comfortable at that moment in the silence. When the car pulled up outside and she took Rick's hand to climb out, she couldn't miss the look from the doorman and she couldn't miss the reaction of the maitre d'. She was reminded a little of the way the guys in the squad room had looked at her on the night she had gone out with Jenny and worked the Boulevard. Tonight though, she really didnt care. She lked the fact that Rick seemed to be showing her off or at the very least that he seemed happy to be seen with her. The club was as private as it got without actually staying indoors. Describing it as exclusive barely came close. And there was certainly no chance that anyone would recognize her as a cop.

She watched as the waiter poured out the champagne which cost more than a months salary for her. And she blushed at the toast. She shook her head.

"I find that a little hard to believe, Mr Reed. A man like you... there must be women falling over themselves. And you know, you really dont have to do this. A bottle of Australian Shiraz at home in front of the TV would have been just as good." She leaned forward and kissed him softly on the mouth.

Well it was true that there were women who do fall over themselves for Rick Reed, those were the women he didn't care for. Those women were pretty much just out looking for what they could get. Rick did have a taste for what Natasha calls the bimbos, girls like Tiffany one of Rick's personal trainers who has great body's but little upstairs. His real trill was finding a woman who was fit, intelligent and beautiful. Evie was certainly all of those categorize which Rick wanted in a woman. But still Rick wondered if Evie had any thoughts about his son Tom. The needs of Rick's son were more important to him then even his own life. Rick knew that Tom was suffering from a broken heart since his wife had died. Tom was always there to help his friends like Evie's father when his wife left the family. But Tom never accepted help during his time of mourning.

" Well Evie......I do enjoy both expensive and the simple things life has to offer.......And I do like to spoil those who are special too me. " Rick added once Evie broke her short, but very sweet kiss. " I doubt that anyone has spoiled you in such a way in a long time. " Rick said as he lowered his glass, placing it on the table then he reached over for Evie's hand. " I would like very much to have a relationship with you Evie.....You know about my past and I have nothing to hide from you........But.......I do wonder if you've had thoughts about my son.....Tom......Your partner.......Tom is a fine man and he was a great husband.......But since his wife was killed some years back......He has wrapped himself in his work.......Tom is suffering from a broken heart and he could use a woman like you. " Rick was direct and to the point when he laid everything out on the table. He did have strong feelings for Evie and would very much like to have her. Tom however was Rick's first concern and his well being was foremost in his mind.

She watched as Rick took hold of her hand. She listened to what he was saying and gradually a slightly puzzled look replaced the soft smile. When Rick had finished, she stared at him for a moment. Her mind was trying to process what had just happened. Was this was tonight was about? Was Rick actually trying to set Evie up with Tom? She pulled her hand away slowly and placed a relatively non-descript smile on her face. And then she shook her head a little.

"I don't fuck my partner Rick. It's a bad idea. It's not just that it breaks the rules... in this case, the rule is a pretty good one. Partners do get close and in the best relationships, they'll die for each other. But put the emotional backage of a normal relationship into that and one of the them isn't going to work. And if one doesn't, it's going to bring about the end of the other. I don't fuck my partner, I'm sorry. And I'm sorry if that's what all of this was for." She put down her napkin and stood up slowly. "Thank you for tonight. I... I had fun. I can get a can home. No need to bother Natasha."

Rick listened too Evie as she spoke about why partners shouldn't get involved with each other. He understood her reason and respected the fact that Evie was so open on this subject. Rick reached up and gently took Evie's hand again as she was saying about taking a cab home. " Nonsense......Sit down please. " Rick said with a commanding tone, but his voice didn't even pass a whisper. " As I said......I want a relationship with you......I just wanted to make sure that you didn't have feelings for my son.......Tom is very important too me Evie........I hope you understand my concern for his well being......But I needed to find out if you held some desire for Tom.....Even if you kept it hidden. " Rick added as he looked up at Evie. The waiter came over as Evie moved down to her seat. They gave their orders to the waiter then he left the table.

" Let's talk about you.......How long have you had that deep desire to explore Jenny's world? " Rick asked as he lifted the bottle of champagne pouring more into Evie's glass. He set the bottle back down then waited for Evie to answer.

Meanwhile.......Tom had left his boat for a meeting of his own. This meeting was at Malone's with Evie's father Jack and her brothers Steven and James. The four men were gathering together so they could talk over how tomorrow would go. The shooting championships were up for grabs tomorrow, but beyond that.....Evie was being honored for her actions in capturing Bolin and with how she handled the shooting scene when Officer Connors was shot. The respect that Evie wanted was coming faster then she thought and after Saturday very few would take about her as Jack's daughter. After the day was over, there was a special party which would be held at Malone's for Evie. Tom, Jack and Evie's brothers had a surprise gift for Evie. It was something that she needed since becoming a detective.

Evie didn't pull her hand away but she stood for a moment looking down at Rick, not particularly aware of the fact that people on tables nearby were looking at her. She smiled a little and eased herself back into her chair. There was something about how this man spoke to her that made her feel that she couldn't say no.

"Your son is a good man. I don't know whether, if we weren't partners... But we are and so what I feel about him is ... professional." She looked up to the waiter as she gave her order, conscious of him at her shoulder looking down the front of her dress. And all the time Rick held her hand, his thumb rubbing the back again.

When the waiter had gone, she was surprised by Rick's question, she blushed a little and smiled. "I.. didn't know that I did...I mean I don't as far as I'm aware...it was just..." She shrugged a little. "I... don't know... It just kind of happened."

Rick felt more at ease about pursuing a relationship with Evie since she said that her feelings towards Tom was just professional. He also found her answer to his question to be honest and somewhat innocent. This was another part of Evie that he found attractive. Evie could be tough when needed while still being a woman, plus she had an innocents about her that was quite a turn on. The waiter brought their dinner then left the table leaving Evie & Rick to enjoy their food. Once the food was gone and the champagne bottle was empty, Rick & Evie left the Diamond Club arm in arm. Rick stopped a few times talking with old friends and he proudly showed Evie off. Her dress certainly was made to show off her assets and many of Rick's friends got an eye full.

Natasha was waiting for them out front with the limo. After Evie & Rick were back inside, Natasha pulled out heading for Evie's apartment. Rick had his arm around Evie again, he pulled her body close to his. " I would like to start working on that relationship Evie........I want to date you openly......Take you around town and have you over to my house.....Perhaps you could spend the night? " Rick's voice was soft, but still carried a strong tone. He had Evie in his arms, which was a feeling that he enjoyed. Rick knew that this was a big step for Evie and didn't expect an answer right away. He even said that she could think about an her answer. Rick was in no hurry and wouldn't push Evie into a relationship. He did add that when he was in a relationship, he wouldn't sleep with any other woman but Evie. Rick had always been this way even when he was married to Tom's mother. He never once fucked any of the girls who worked at his whorehouses. It wasn't until his wife died, that Rick allowed himself to take pleasures with those lovely ladies.

Each time Rick stopped at another table, Evie found herself standing close to him, inside the curve of his arm as he wrapped it around her and let his hand rest on her hip. She didn't know anyone Rick spoke to and the conversation was nothing other than light and simply passing the time of day.

She climbed into the back of the limo, saying good evening again to Natasha, she was aware of Rick sitting in beside her and once again hooking is arm around. It was a feeling she was starting to enjoy, and even more so when he pulled her in close to him. She liked the feel of his control over her just in this small gesture. And she liked the feel of his hard body against hers.

She was a little surprised with what Rick said to her as the car headed our to the coast. She turned a little towards him, her hand resting on his chest. Date openly. She smiled to herself imagining Finn's reaction at the idea. But she was more concerned about Tom. She took a deep breath.

"I... I don't know...I mean..." she paused for a moment getting her thoughts straight. "I'd like that a lot. And as you're about to see while my place isn't quite as palacial as your home, I can probably make you feel comfortable if you wanted to stay over too. But...what do you think you son is going to say when he finds out youre... Dating his partner?"

Rick wasn't suggesting that they spend the night together now. He was willing to wait and give Evie time to think about his proposal of dating. " I will not push you into anything Evie.......Take some time and think about it......As for your place......I know you could make me comfortable anywhere. " Rick said as he leaned a nit closer and placed a short, soft kiss upon Evie's lips. He then pulled back slight and said that where she lived didn't matter too him. He wanted her not where she lived or anything she had. Rick just wanted Evie at his side for as long as she wanted to be there. " As for Thomas......I can deal with that if and when the time comes.......It's not like I've asked you to marry me......You are over 18 years old and are free to date whomever you wish. " Rick added as Natasha pulled the limo up in front of Evie's apartment. She jumped out then went around and opened the rear door. Rick climbed from the car the extended his hand towards Evie. " Just think over what I've said.......I'll be in touch in a few days and you can give me your answer then......If you don't want a relationship with me......We can still be close friends. " Rick said as he lifted Evie's hand to his lips then placed a kiss on the back of it.

Rick stood a few feet from the limo as Evie walked away. He waited until Evie was safely inside of the building before slipping back into his car. Natasha drove away once she was back inside and in about 45 minutes they returned to Rick's home in Bel Air. Rick really was hoping that Evie would calm any fears that she may have and accept dating him. There were many things that Rick liked about Evie and he felt she liked him also. Evie could do a lot worse when it came to men. Rick truly cared about her and wouldn't hurt her or do anything that would bring a bad light on Evie. All Rick could hope for now was a chance to have Evie at his side and in his bed.

Evie stepped into her apartment and closed the door behind her, leaning against it for a moment. She let out a long breath and smiled to herself, hardly believing the night she had just had. She pushed herself off the door and walked through to the kitchen, kicking off her heels as she did. She got a bottle of water out of the refrigerator and sat down in the lounge after having switched on the TV for the late news. Bolin still seemed to be the headline and probably would be for a few days. Her mind was on Rick though. If she'd been 10 years younger, she would ave diagnosed herself as having a teenage crush. But she wasn't. She was a cop. And he was an ex-crime boss. But EX was the operative word.

She got up, switched off the TV and walked through to the bedroom. The cop and the mobster. It was true he had never been convicted of anything, but that just meant he hadn't gotten caught or that the DA didn't have enough evidence. She undressed, slipped a Yankees t-shirt over her head and climbed into bed. As she slipped the t-shirt on, she heard the pitcher's words in her head. "A Yankee slut." even 'brass cupcake' sounded good compared to that. She laid down pushing the memories out of her head for a moment, forcing herself to think about tomorrow. She groaned. The shooting competition. How on earth ad she been persuaded to enter that. She was a good shot...no question about it. On most days, her brothers were both better... But every once in a while... But now she knew Tom Reed. She wasn't convinced that the title was going anywhere other than to Tom Reed. Tom Reed. What would he say at the idea of her being with his father.

The next thing she knew, she was waking up with the sun streaming in the windows. She cursed for having forgotten to close the curtains the night before, but it forced her up. Usually on a Saturday, she gave herself a day off the run, and in light of her 'exercise ' last night she probably ad more cause to. But she pushed herself up. Maybe the run would make sure she was awake...sharp for the competition. And she could mentally prepare for the constant ribbing and teasing from her family, all designed of course to put her off. She smiled to herself as she got dressed and headed out. She liked this kinds of days. Her family...the police family... Some fun...almost certainly a few beers. Today was a going to be a good day.

Tom was up, dressed and out early that Saturday. He stopped at his father house in Bel Air for breakfast which Tom did every Saturday that he was off. Then it was off to the police academy where officers, detectives and their families gather to watch the shooting championship. Over the years the shooting championship has become more like a police carnival with games, rides, peanuts, popcorn, cotton candy and other delights. For the cadets of the academy it was treated as a holiday. They got watch the best in the department go toe to toe until a champion is crowned. For the last 5 years that champion has been Tom Reed. He was tough to beat because Tom rarely ever missed what he was aiming at. Tom was a natural shooter, he was born with shooting in his blood. It was like how some people are born to be great football players, or baseball players, Tom it seems was born to be a cop.

By the time that Tom arrived at the academy, the place was already buzzing and the smart money was on him. Side betting was always discouraged by the department, but they never truly tried to stop it. The side betting went on and even came out in the opening. Certain officers and detectives would sit around taking bets on who the winners would be like the bookies they bust. Bets could be placed on any round from beginning to the finals. They were not only betting on who would win each round and move on, but who would be the last two that would meet for the title. Right now, Tom was the early favorite, but that was to be expected. Many felt that he would win hands down, but who would face him this year? That is where money would be made and lost. There was a master list which featured the names of the top 10 best shooters in the department. Tom was of course number 1, Officer Gill Whitman was number 2 followed by Lt. Jack Taylor, Lt. Chester Banks, Detective Sergeant Steven Taylor, Officer Emma "Rosy" Sosa, Detective James Taylor, Officer Ramiro Martinez, Detective Evelyn Taylor and Detective CeCe Ramirez.

The championship started once everyone had time to greet each other and place some extra bets on the side. Tom of course was hanging around the Taylor family since they were all close friends and Jack had been his partner at one time. That roll had been take over by Evie who seemed rather chipper today. The top 20 shooters in the department had been broken down into two brackets, A and B. Tom found himself in bracket A along with his old friend Jack. Many of the others in the top 10 were in bracket B which is where Evie was. The championship was underway and it sure seemed like Tom would repeat as champion, but it quickly became clear that Jack wasn't going to be a push over. The two men easily beat everyone who came up against them and soon enough they were only two left in bracket A. Tom & Jack faced off too see who would go on to the championship round against the winner of bracket B. The shooting championship was run in this manner. The first round was at the target range where the shooters would stand looking down the range and fire at a silhouette targets. They would fire from 25 yards away then from 50 yards away. The winner was the person who had the most points once the round was over. If there was a tie, the competitors would move on to Combat.

Combat was a fake street which had buildings made from plywood. There were junked cars sitting around and garbage cans. Pretty much anything you would see on a normal city street was here. This was also used for training new officers. Targets would popup from the ground, doorways, windows and alleyways. Some of these targets were bad guys, but there were some good guys thrown in to test the reflexes of the officers. Hitting any of the good guys took points away from your score.

Tom & Jack ready themselves on the firing line. A huge crowd was sitting and standing behind the two men. The range master gave the order to fire, both men unloaded their weapons at 25 yards. The targets were then moved back to 50 yards while Tom & Jack reloaded their weapons. Once they were ready, the range master again ordered them to fire. The sound was like rolling thunder as Tom & Jack unloaded their second clips. Most everyone including Jack was using the Glock, but Tom as normal was using his Desert Eagle. Tom & Jack returned to where Evie and her brothers were hanging out. It took a few minutes but soon it was announced that Tom had beaten his old partner and was moving on to the championship round.

It was now time for the B bracket to get underway. In her round 1 challenge, Evie found that she was facing Lt. Chester Banks who was one of the SWAT Commanders. Once the shooting started, it didn't take long for Lt. Banks too see that he wasn't having a good day. Evie smoked him easily and moved on to round 2. Evie faced Officer Emma Sosa in the 2nd round. The two women were tied after the target range was over. They headed over to the combat area along with everyone who was watching. Tom & Jack looked on as they watched how Evie handled herself. She sure seemed very relaxed today and it showed in her movements. Evie was quick, sharp as a tack and deadly with her shots. Once both women took a turn going down the combat street it was revealed that Evie edged out Officer Sosa by two targets. Evie moved on to round number 3 and she was greeted by bugs from her father, brothers and partner.

Evie's round 3 challenger was the toughest she had faced yet. Her brother James was matched up against her and of course there was plenty of ribbing going on between the two siblings. The ranger master gave the order to fire and the two cut loose. By the end of the second round of firing, James found that Evie edge him by out by only 5 points. Round 4 came and went with Evie again edging out another challenger. She beat Detective CeCe Ramirez in combat by only one target. The finals for bracket B were set, it was Evie going against her older brother Steven. The winner of this round would go on to face Tom for the championship. Perhaps Steven was a bit overconfident? Maybe he shouldn't have spent so much time talking trash to his sister? By the end of the finals, Steven was smoked by his little sister much to the delight of James. Evie was quickly gaining the respect that she had so wanted. Her actions here and over the past couple weeks after becoming a detective had changed many minds of those who thought that she was riding her daddy's coat tails.

The championship finals came with Evie having to face her own partner Tom. They wished each other good luck before the command was given to fire. As before, the first round was from 25 yards and the second from 50 yards. Tom & Evie were tied after the target range, it was now on to combat. Each had taken a turn down the combat street and each had hit every target. The two partners were still tied, so a coin was tossed which Tom called right. He was given the choice to return to the range or play another round of combat.....Tom picked combat. If Evie was going to beat Tom, it was gonna have to be at the game he enjoyed the most. Evie walked down the street first. She wheeled and fired at the targets nailing each one. Evie dropped down behind one of the cars and loaded a second clip into her Glock then continued to walk down the street. Again Evie was hitting everything she aimed at. By the end of her second round of combat, Evie held a perfect score. It was Tom's turn and he started to walk down the long street as everyone looked on. Tom was perfect through his first clip, he dropped down behind the same car that Evie had used for cover. He loaded a second clip into his Desert Eagle then started moving again. Once Tom's second clip was empty he started back to where the crowd was waiting. The range master checked over his score then announced that Tom had missed one target and that Evie was the new shooting champion of the department. Evie quickly found herself being mobbed by her brothers, father and by Tom. Evie went from embrace to embrace ending up wrapped his her partner's arms. Tom gave Evie a kiss on her forehead as Jack brought the trophy over. Tom pulled away from the hug and took the trophy from Jack then handed it to Evie. " As hard as it was winning......It will be harder next year when you're the defending champion. " Tom said with a smile on his face.

There was an hour off to hang around and relax before the second part of the day started. This part wasn't a normal part of the shooting championship, but at had been added since all the important people would be here. All the officers were told to bring their uniforms with them, even the detectives had to wear their uniforms today. On the grounds overlooking the shooting area was the area where the cadets would graduate. This is where the special ceremony would take place. A platform had been set up and on this platform sat Lt. Lesley Tamura, Lt. Jack Taylor, Captain Mike MacDonald, Chief of Police Beck, the Mayor of Los Angeles and Police Commissioner Yvonne Fernandez. They were all waiting on Evie to arrive after putting on her uniform. Evie had no idea what was coming her her way. She was meet by Tom outside of the women's locker room. Tom was wearing his uniform his sergeant strips showing proudly on the upper arms of his shirt sleeves. He took Evie by the hand and walked with her out of the main building towards where everyone was waiting. Tom didn't want this to be a total shock to Evie, so he told her what was going on. Evie was going to honored for what she had done in the past couple of weeks.

The ceremony started once Tom & Evie appeared and joined the other officers and detectives who stood in front of the platform. It started off with a speech from the Mayor who commended all of the officers for keeping the city safe. His speech went on for about 10 minutes then Commissioner Fernandez started to speak. " Today we are here to honor the hard work and dedication of Detective Evelyn Taylor.........Her self sacrifice has shown her to be brave and very worthy to hold the title detective and through her hard and tireless work.....She took down a brutal kill who was stalking our streets. " Commissioner Fernandez said, she went on parsing Evie for another 5 minutes before she called Evie up to the platform. Once Evie was on the platform and facing the Commissioner, she received her official commendation. Commissioner Fernandez then pinned tow metals on Evie's chest. Fist came the Police Medal for Heroism, the second was the metal of valor. Evie received both metals for her actions during the shootout where she pulled Officer Ed Connors from the line of fire and for her decoy and take down of the insane Doctor Bolin. " Detective Taylor......You are a credit to the badge and to the city. " Commissioner Fernandez added then those on the platform stood and applauded, Jack looked very much the proud father that he was.

Tom turned his head slightly looking down the line of officers who stood behind him. " Attention!......Salute!" Tom barked out the orders which the others followed. Every officer and cadet who stood looking on stood tall and raised their hand to their hats saluting Evie. Among these officers stood a young woman who was only a few years out of the academy herself. Her name is Officer Lisa Tataglia, she had just returned to active duty after a shooting when wrong. Lisa and her partner had answered a call about a man with a gun waving it and making threats to kill people. The men had gone into an old apartment building just before Lisa & her partner arrived. The people on the street told the officers where the man had gone and Lisa along with her partner headed into the building. They had no idea where this man was, so they had to move slowly and carefully. The shooting happened as they where going up the stairs. Lisa was bring up the rear and she saw a gun appear from a door which was open just slightly. Lisa only had seconds to think, she shoved her partner out of the way the yelled out police. The gun stayed in the opening and was now pointed at Lisa. She fired three shots from her service Glock and a thud was heard. Lisa's partner rushed up to the door and kicked it open only to find a young boy was dead. He had found the gun which the man had dropped while escaping. The boy who was deaf and couldn't hear Lisa calling out that they were police. The young boys death hit Lisa hard, she took a few weeks off before returning to duty. Lisa looked up at Evie holding her salute until Evie returned it to those standing before her. In just a few months, Lisa would find herself face to face with Evie. Lisa's career would hang on whether or not Evie & Tom could help her regain the confidence she had lost. But there was more trouble ahead for Lisa and another death in her future.

Back from the run, she showered quickly and changed. It was to be a somewhat unusual day in that it wasn’t quite the informal police affair that it normally was. Today, all attending officers had also been instructed to take their dress uniforms with them although no-one seemed to know why. She took her uniform, packed in a protective suit bag, out of the closet and checked that it was appropriately pressed. She picked up her dress shoes and put them in a separate bag. She then dressed herself in brown boots, blue jeans, a white t-shirt and she carried her brown leather jacket, together with her uniform through to the lounge. She then collected the Glock from the drawer and went into the kitchen spending 30 minutes, cleaning it, oiling it, checking every mechanism. Once she was happy with it, she slipped on the holster and slid the Glock into its usual place. She picked up her cell phone to call a cab but for a moment or two she wished she had Rick’s number, just to call him, thank him for dinner the previous evening. But she didn’t have the number so her thanks would have to wait for some other time.

She called the cab and it dropped her off just outside the main gates of the Academy. By the time she arrived, it seemed that most people were already there. After dropping her dress uniform off in the locker room, it took her about 10 minutes to find her family and as expected Reed was with them. She was greeted with a variety of comments regarding her usual time-keeping.

“Excuse me... how am I late? Nothing has happened yet. Nothing has started. I have missed nothing... therefore I cannot possibly be late.” The men started laughing. James leaned in towards Reed and started to tell some story from their childhood designed solely to embarrass his sister.

“Reed, take no notice of anything they might tell you today. Everything will be a lie. Do we know the brackets yet?” Her father handed her the piece of paper, typed on which was the list of the top 10 shooters and the way they had been drawn against each other. Evie read the list and then looked up, looking around the smirking faces. She focused on Reed.

“You have to be kidding me?” she said, but the laughter clear in her voice. “You get the old man and I have to get past more than half of the top ten including Wyatt Earp and Billy the Kid here? This thing is rigged.”

“Stop whinging and have a drink.” Her Dad handed her a chilled can of diet Coke. She looked at him, grinning. “Come on then... who have you put your money on?” Jack looked around his family and friend. “Now you know I don’t put money on these things.” All four of them immediately started laughing. “You’ll have put more money on that the four of us combined Jack... so where did you put it?” Reed asked. Jack held his hands up, smiled and shook his head. Just at that moment, Jack’s name was called for his first round contest.

“You’re up old man” Steven said as he patted him on the back. “Have you bought your glasses with you?” The others started laughing while Jack threw a mock dirty look at his son. It was no real surprise to any of them that the first bracket came down to Tom versus Jack. And truth be told it wasn’t particularly a surprise when Tom won... not even to Jack.

Evie didn’t have high hopes at all. She couldn’t really see herself getting past her first round. How was she supposed to get past a SWAT watch commander and the second best shot in the Department? But Chester Banks was having a very bad day and Evie couldn’t believe her luck. Emma Sosa was a harder challenge and having squeezed her out, she was faced with James. She had never beaten James in any kind of shooting competition before today but she couldn’t remember a day when her shooting had felt so relaxed and easy. James was magnanimous in defeat and Evie was good in victory. Two rounds later and Steve was next; this was the man who had spent the most time teaching her how to shoot; her Dad had taken her the first couple of times, but then Steve had finished up as her main teacher. She held the Glock in the same way he did; she shot it in the same way he did. And as with James, she had never out shot him. Until now. And Steve played it like it killed him in response to which all Evie and James could do was laugh. When it came to the final, no-one in the Academy grounds at that point gave Evie a chance. 1st versus 9th. It was a million to one chance... but it came off, by the narrowest of margins. The way she was mobbed, it finished up with Evie at the bottom of a heap on the floor. It was her father who picked her up and gave her his own hug which was quickly followed by a hug from Tom. If it hadn’t been for the formal event later the beer would have already been cracked by now; as it was they had to make do with Coke and coffee.

An hour later she was stepping out of the locker room to find Reed waiting for her. She was a little surprised to see him there and as he walked her out, she asked him what the hell was going on. He smiled and broke the news to her. She stopped in her tracks.

“You have to be kidding me... I just... I just did my job Reed... “

She spent the next hour feeling completely uncomfortable. She didn’t like being held up like this in front of people who she knew were better cops than her, who she knew would have done the same had they been in her position. She stood rigid to attention as the medals were pinned to her chest. As she stepped off the platform, she walked into three long hard hugs from her family. As Steve finally let her out of the hug, but still had his arm wrapped around her, she looked around them. “Can we go get a drink now... please.”

After a quick change of clothes, Evie, her family and Tom ended up at Malone's which had already been decorated for the celebration. It turned out to be a double celebration since Evie won the shooting championship. Rusty Malone a retired cop who opened the bar years ago. He brought out 4 large pizzas and a huge cake box. This cake box wasn't holding a normal cake, it had 30 cupcakes with brass colored buttercream icing. Tom laid the cake box down on a nearby table. Jack took over a plate which Tom placed one of the brass colored cupcakes on it then he placed it in front of Evie. " Here's a tasty little treat for our own brass cupcake. " Tom said then he raised his bottle of beer into the air. " Too the best damn shot in the department......And let no one say she didn't earn it. " Everyone took a drink after the toast was made. This was the fun part of being a cop. Days when you could kick back and relax with friends who were in their own way family. Rusty brought over a small box wrapped in gift paper. He laid the box down in front of Evie. Rusty said that it was a gift from him too her in honor of her special day. In side the box was a pair of golden handcuffs. James looked down as Evie opened the box and after reaching in pulled the cuffs out. " Damn Rusty......Is that real gold? " James asked as he looked to the older man. Rusty looked towards James and shook his head, he then admitted that the cuffs were spray painted gold, but the cuffs were real metal.

The bar was packed with off duty cops. Some had been here since the party started. Others were just coming in after getting off duty. Steven had disappeared after getting a call on his cell phone. He reappeared about 10 minutes later and whispered something to James. James in turn said something to his father and to Tom who was standing with Jack. Jack looked at Tom and nodded his head. Tom walked over to where Evie was sitting and yelled out for everyone's attention. " We all know that being a cop in L.A. is a tough job........But we do work for a department that allows it's detectives the use of an unmarked police car. " Tom said as he stood up on a chair so he could talk over the crowd. " As everyone us knows.....It's important for a cop to be able to get around without the use of public transportation or a taxi. " Tom continued as he looked down at Evie. " So myself and the men of the Taylor clan got together and bought the lone L.A. detective who doesn't own her own car or use one from the department. " Tom stepped down from the chair then held out his hand towards Evie. " Your surprise is waiting outside for you. " Tom said as he stood along with Jack, Steven and James.

And waiting right out front was something that Evie needed more then anything else. A vintage 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Super Cobra, outfitted with a police radio, hidden lights and siren. " 1 William 71......Your car awaits. " Jack used Evie's police radio call number as he waited for Evie to join them.

Evie was sat on a stool at the far end of the bar, with a chilled bottle of beer in her hand and her family, Tom and a few other friends of the Taylor’s standing around. When Tom brought her a cupcake, everyone stood around silent for a moment and then burst out laughing – everyone except Evie who shook her head in mock despair. “You know, it’s a good job John Cooper retired to New Mexico; I’d quite happily kill him for that little creation.” John Cooper had been Evie’s first training officer – straight out of the Academy. It had been John who had first christened her the ‘Brass Cupcake’ and almost no-one had let her forget it since.

When Rusty had appeared for a second time and presented her with the gold handcuffs, Evie stood up and gave him a hug. When James asked him if they were real, Evie stared at him is disbelief. “Sure they are James, and Rusty here robs banks to supplement his pension and the income from the bar.”

“I was only asking. They look pretty good.”

Over the next couple of hours, the noise in the bar increased as the number of bottles consumed increased and as more officers came in. Very few were leaving and it was clear that there were going to be a few sore heads in the morning. When Tom called for some quiet and started talking about cops and public transport and cars, Evie wasn’t entirely sure where it was leading – even when she was being walked outside. But when she saw the Mustang, she stopped dead in her tracks. Even after her Dad had used her radio call number, it took James pushing her forwards to get her near the car. Steve held out his hand, the keys dangling from his fingers. Evie stared at him.

“I can’t believe you guys did this.”

“Don’t. Crash. It.”

Evie opened her mouth in shock, ready to question the meaning of Steve’s comment. Before she had a chance, James jumped in.

“3 to 1 there’s a dent in it within the month.”

“I’d give it a week.” Now it was her father who chipped in.

“Hey... hey... not fair.”

“Not fair? NOT FAIR? Excuse me? Erm... Dad’s Mercury....”

“I was 18; that doesn’t count.”

“James’ pick-up... and you were 24 then. And 26!” Evie was struggling to hold back the laughter. “Not my fault; the other driver...”

“And my Camero two months ago.”

“You make it sound like I can’t drive.”

“Evie... you might have a license, but you can’t fuckin’ drive. And I don’t care what the Police Driving School says. Tom... take my advice... never let her behind the wheel.”

Still laughing, Evie reached out to take the keys from Steve but he pulled them away quickly. “on second thoughts... you’ve probably had too much to drink. I’ll leave them with Rusty and you can pick it up tomorrow.”

Tom was smiling as James & Steven were picking on Evie about her driving. He had heard all about accidents that Evie was in and he knew about her driving record at the academy. Evie's driving record was spotless and she passed the driving test with flying colors. Tom found himself coming to Evie's defense against her brothers James & Steven. He told them that Evie had already driven his unmarked car and she hadn't had any troubles. Tom was then reminded by Jack about how many unmarked and marked police car were totaled while Tom was driving. These were facts that Tom couldn't deny, last year alone, 7 unmarked police cars were wrecked by Tom. Each one while in a hot pursuit of criminals, Tom added. " You have what?......6 So far this year? " Jack asked with a huge grin on his face. Tom stood there shaking his head. " Only 5.......The sixth one was being driven by Evie and was used for target practice. " Tom pointed out which made James and Steven laugh. " See.......She does have one on her record. " Steven joked while he and James were snickering.

Jack thought that idea of Evie keeping the keys at the bar was a good one. They've all had more then a few and it wouldn't look good if Evie wrecked her car on the day she got it. Jack pulled out his cell phone and called dispatch. He told them to tell all day and night units that his daughter's car would be parked out in front of Malone's bar and would be picked up tomorrow. Jack placed an arm over Evie's shoulder then placed a kiss on her cheek. " There......Problem solved. " Jack said as he looked from Evie towards his sons. He had a fine family, even thought they grew up with only one parent. It was very hard on Jack not having his wife around. Raising kids was hard enough, but raising them when you're a cop is even harder. But each of his kids turned out great, Jack couldn't complain.

After having a good look round and inside the Mustang, everyone gradually made their way back into the bar and another round of beers. Jack said his goodbyes mid evening as did a number of other officers who had to work a Sunday shift. About an hour later, Evie sitting back on her stool at the bar, laughing and joking with her brothers, with Tom and with some friends. Gradually over the course of the night, more and more people left until at a little after midnight there was just the Taylors, Tom and Rusty. When they finished their last bottles, all of them were drunk - except Rusty of course who, because he was tending bar, had barely touched anything all night - but none of them were bad drunks. They could all still hold a reasonable conversation and they could all still walk. None of them were in a fit condition to drive though... nowhere near. Tom finished up getting a cab back to the marina, whilst the Taylors headed to Evie's in a separate cab. James was dropped off at Mar Vista where his apartment was whilst Steve decided to crash at Evie's rather than get the cab to take him Pacific Palisades.

After a later than usual breakfast the following day - Steve cooked up some eggs, bacon, toast, fresh coffee - the two of them got in a cab and drove back to Rusty's. The bar was significantly quieter than it had been less than 24 hours before but was significantly tidier than when they had left it. After a conversation about how good the previous night had been, he handed over the keys and Evie got her first drive in the Mustang, with Steve constantly telling her that she needed to be careful.

"It's a big car Evie... there's a lot a power under that hood. Give yourself some time to get used to it."

Taking the long route, Evie drive Steve home, stayed for a coffee and then headed back to her own place. Her apartment came with a parking space but until now it was something that she had never had to use. She couldn't help smiling as she pulled the Mustang into the lot for the first time. She spent the rest of late afternoon and evening doing little more than watching TV. Part of her wondered whether it was appropriate to go and see Rick, but without knowing what Reed's plans were for the Sunday, she decided that it probably wasn't a good idea.

Tom who just sat around painting and watching tv would have enjoyed a visit from his partner, but the partners didn't visit each other. Monday morning came, the start of a new work week. It was just a little after 6 am when the alarm of Tom's bed side clock woke him. He yawned and stretched then climbed from his bed. Tom would take his shower then shave after which he would get dressed for work. Monday would start out like just a normal day, but it would quickly spiral out of control and drag long buried nightmares out in the open.

Meanwhile.........Just north of Los Angeles

7:39 am...........20 miles north of Los Angeles. A prison van and it's escort stopped for fuel at a gas station which sat along the freeway. The driver of the van was out pumping gas with the other guard went over and started talking with the two other guards who were n the escort car. There was no one else inside of the prison van except for Simon Randell, a convicted killer and he was the only one who noticed the ambulance which pulled up behind the white van. A sly smile drifted over his face as he slowly looked around seeing that all the guards were very busy. Three men & a woman jumped out from the front of the ambulance and they were joined by two more who came from the back. They opened up on the guard pumping gas with Mac-10 machine guns while the other two started firing at the guards in and around the car.

Within seconds all the guards were dead and Simon Randell had been freed from the prison van and his chains. His men rushed Simon into the ambulance then they roared off. The California Highway Patrol was called and arrived only minutes after Simon had left. It was going to be the start of a very busy day.

Another day in paradise. Another Monday morning. Same routine. Run. Shower. Breakfast. And then it changed. She still walked back to her coffee shop and bought her second large coffee of the morning, but instead of heading for the bus, this time she walked back to her apartment... to the parking lot and climbed in the front seat of the car. It was already a warm day; she rolled the window down and pulled out of the lot. She picked up the radio and called in, indicating that she was on her way.

And then she heard the sudden increase in the radio traffic. An escaped prisoner. Three guards dead. Evie couldn't help wondering whether the fall out from that would be heading in the direction of their jurisdiction.

10 years ago........Los Angeles.

The LAPD had been running themselves ragged for weeks trying to stop a murderous cult bent on bring down society. The leader of this cult was a former Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley. Simon Randell would speak to his students for hours about the evils of society and how such a society was like a house made from cards. He would say that any house made from cards can not stand and with the right touch, it would collapse upon it's self. Most of his students just let what Simon said pass over their heads. But there were a few who not only listened, they would help him in his crusade. Simon quit teaching and gathered his closest students who became known as his "Family".

This so called family became a murderous band trying to bring the downfall of society. After society fell there would be chaos and a need for leadership. Simon Randell would step up and take control of those left behind. He would reshape society in his own image and in turn become a God. For almost two full months, Simon and his family ran wild killing anyone they came acrossed. It didn't matter if the person was black, white, male or female. No one of any sex, age or color was safe and it was making the police look inept. 4 different teams of detectives were given the lead on this case and each one failed to catch the killers. One pair of partners ended up as victims of this blood thirsty band. Only a few of Simon's family were former students, the rest were mostly crooks, thieves, murderers and rapists which flocked to Randell's side as if he was the new messiah. Each member of the cult had a death's head tattoo on the forearm of their left arm. This death's head was different from the normal skull and crossed bones. It was a skull with a pair of crossed axes behind it.

The family had grown into 20 members, but only a core group was close to Simon. This core group was made up of Paul Brown....white male age 21....Larry Banner.....white male age 27........Charlie Decker......white male age 24.......Dirk Simmons......black male age 19 and Mary Cash......white female age 18. Dirk Simmons & Mary Cash had been students of Simon when he was teaching.

The case finally fell in the lap of then Sergeant Jack Taylor and his new partner Detective Thomas Reed. They began to track Simon and his group of killers. The body count stood at 23 when Jack & Tom finally cornered Simon and his core group. A bloody battle started at a small farm just outside of the City of Thousand Oaks. Jack & Tom joined officers from the CHP and the L.A. County Sheriff's Office to surround the farm. 8 members of Simon's cult were killed during the gun battle at the farm. A few escaped including Simon, Larry Banner & Paul Brown in one car and Mary Cash, Dirk Simmons and Charlie Decker in another car. Jack & Tom went after Simon while the CHP & Sheriff's Department chased the others.

Jack & Tom chased Simon and his men to the docks in Los Angeles. Another gun battle broke out were Larry Banner was killed. The battle continued on foot with Paul Brown being shot, but so was Tom and Jack. The two detectives had been hit by the murderers, Jack in the upper chest and Tom in the leg. This however didn't stop the two detectives, they continued to chase Simon. The chase finally ended when Simon reached the end of a pier where stopped then turned to face the on coming cops. By now, both Jack & Tom were weak form blood loss, but they weren't giving up. Jack ordered Simon to drop his weapon and raise his hands. Simon just laughed and said that he couldn't die, he was God! Jack & Tom unloaded their weapons when Simon aimed his pistol at them. Simon Randell was hit by 12 bullets and fell down. The two detectives expected Simon to be dead, but much to their shock.....he was still alive.

Simon Randell was taken to the hospital where doctors couldn't explain how he lived. Somehow, Simon Randell was shot 12 times in the chest by two Glocks and lived to face trial. Simon appeared to be the only member of his family who survived the battle with police. He was sentenced to 23 life terms behind bars. After Simon Randell was convicted of the crimes against him, he was sent to the Los Angeles County State Prison where he severed 3 years of his 23 life terms. Simon had tried to escape from Los Angeles County State Prison a number of times before it was decided to send him farther north. The prison board moved Simon Randell to San Quentin State Prison, there he would serve 7 years without any trouble.

Present day........Los Angeles

Since Simon Randell had become a model prisoner and since San Quentin had become so over crowded, the prison board again decided to move Randell. Today had been tagged as the day Simon would be transferred, it was also the day that Simon would escape with the help of some old friends. Vincent Randell, Simon's younger brother along with Mary Cash whom everyone thought was dead took part in Simon's bloody escape. They were joined by Richard Martin and Gunther Muller, a couple of guns for hire.

Jack Taylor left the Taylor family home in Inglewood and headed off for work. He was half to the Central Station when his cell phone started to ring. Jack let out a sigh of disgust when he saw that it was his ex wife. But, Jack answered the phone only to find his ex wife sobbing and pleading for help. Then an unknown male voice came on the phone telling Jack that his ex wife was at Griffith Park and she needed help. He also told Jack to come alone, any other cops around and she would die. Jack hung up his phone then looked at his police radio. He wasn't even friendly with his ex anymore, but being a cop, he couldn't just let her die. Jack drove to the park then waited while looking around. His phone rang again, this time the man told Jack where to find his ex wife. Jack headed down a series of long trails until he found Margret tied to a tree. Just as Jack was moving towards her, he was struck from behind and knocked out. Richard Martin & Gunther Muller picked Jack up and carried him to a white van while Mary grabbed Margret.

Tom had just reached the Central Station when the search for Simon Randell had started. The word of Randell's escape hadn't reached the LAPD yet, but it would. Tom sat down at his desk where he found six new murder cases, plus 4 new robbery cases which all need assigned to detective teams. Lt. Tamura was off today, she was spending her day in court which left Tom in command of Robbery/Homicide. By the time that Evie reached her desk, Tom was sitting there with a bottle of Tylenol in his hands. " Yeah.......It's that kind of day. " Tom said as he looked up at his partner. He then explained about Lesley and handed Evie the robbery cases. Tom asked her to go around and hand these out to those who looked like they didn't have enough to do. A few minutes after Evie started to walk around, the phone on Tom's desk rang.

Evie parked the car in the police garage, the sound of the engine roared around the enclosed space. A couple of the mechanics took some time to have a look around it and started talking engines and mufflers and carburettors. Evie left them to it. She got the elevator up to the squad room and walked up to her desk. She had a puzzled look when she saw Reed sitting there with the painkillers. She smiled sheepishly at his response nd then did hat he asked in terms of the assignments.

" Robbery/Homicide......Sergeant Reed. " Tom answered the phone while fighting to get the safety cap off the damn bottle of Tylenol. But a cold sounding female voice soon brought Tom's attention to his phone. " There's a bomb hidden somewhere in the Central Station.....It's set to go off in 5 minutes. " The female voice warned which made Tom raise up from his chair as Evie came close. He snapped his fingers at her and when she looked he waved for her to come over. Tom wrote out a note telling Evie to call communications and have a trace put on this call. His note also said that there was a bomb in the building.

Tom asked her to repeat herself, saying that he didn't hear her clearly. The woman then snapped out that time was wasting and that the bomb was going off soon. She hung up before communications could get a trace on Tom's phone. " EVERYONE.......LISTEN UP.......WE HAVE A REPORT ON A BOMB IN OUR BUILDING.......GET ON THE PHONES AND START CALL AROUND TO THE UPPER FLOORS......HAVE THEM GET OUT NOW!!.......WE HAVE LESS THE FIVE MINUTES.......I WANT THIS BUILDING CLEAR!! " Tom said loudly as he stood up tell the others what to do. He then asked Evie to call the bomb squad while he went down the hall and cleared out the other squad rooms and offices. It was only a few minutes after Tom disappeared out of room and went down the hall that the phone on his desk started to ring.....again.

Evie was looking over one of the new cases as she handed it to Webb and Pierce but there was something about Reed's reaction to the phone call that made her stop and watch and then walk slowly over to their desk. As she approached, the snapping of his fingers reinforced the view that something was wrong. As she saw him pick up hs pen and start scribbling she peered over trying to read what he was writing. His scribble was appalling, but she could make out enough to suddenly feel the sense of impending doom.

She immediately picked up the phone and asked quietly for the trace on Reed's phone but almost as soon as she ad finished asking Reed held the phone out from hs ear, before putting it down. The caller was gone.

When Reed told the room what was up, the impending doom hit. Evie suggested that the should just activate the fire alarm; that might be the quickest way to get the place empty. When Reed didn't reply she wasn't sure whether he thought it a bad idea or whether he simply hadn't heard. Evie was about to make her own wy out...as the last person from the room... And then she heard the phone ringing again. She hesitated for a moment and then went back to their desk, picking it up.

Tom hadn't heard Evie's suggest about the fire alarm, he was to busy worrying about getting everyone out. He couldn't be sure if this bomb was real, or just a prank. But Tom couldn't take the chance that it was a fake. It was Safer too get everyone out, as quickly as possible. Tom would have went along with Evie's suggest, but it came way to late.

Tom rushed down the hall then he disappeared into the squad room where the Vice Detectives worked. Once they were clearing the building, Tom went down to where the Gang and Narcotics Detectives worked. This is the division that Lt. Jack Taylor is commanding officer of. Tom was surprised that Jack wasn't at work already. Jack Taylor was always on time if not a bit early. Tom left after the squad room started to clear. He continued down the hall stopping at the squad rooms and offices.
