A Revolutionary Romance (Wolvenrogue and myself)

She smiled and relaxed in his arms, leaning her head back against his shoudler. "Well get used to it love, you're soon going to have a wife." she said and kissed his cheek. She smiled and laughed a bit. "Who do you think taught me how to cook. If you think I'm good, you'd be amazed at how well mama cooks." She loved being wrapped in his arms, it felt safe. She couldn't wait until they were wed, to be his completely. She shifted slightly and sighed. She had missed him so much over the last two years, and for once in a long while she felt whole. "I missed you so much." she said softly, nuzzling her head in the crook of his neck.

I missed you too... every day, every minute. It was then that he remembered something. He went to his room and found his haversack, It didn't have much in it, but stuffed in the bottom, were the letters he'd written, but never been able to mail. They were unaddressed and wrinkled but he thought she would want them anyway. He handed her the wrinkled bundle with maybe fifty letters. " I wrote you every chance I got, but never got to mail them" he said.

He looked into her eyes.

She watched as he left for his room and smiled a bit. She wondered what exactly he was going to get. She smiled as he came back with wrinkled sheets of paper. When he handed them to her she smiled and looked at the top one. "You never did forget about me, did you?" she said and smiled. She looked over the letter and tears began to well in her eyes. She wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him softly, before resting her head on his shoulder. "I am so glad you were okay. It was hell knowing you were out there and you could have been killed. I wish you had been able to send these, it would have helped ease my mind." She smiled and placed the letters on the counter. "I shall read them all tonight Robert." she said and kissed him again softly. It warmed her to know she had been on his mind as much as he had been on hers. She looked up into his eyes and smiled warmly. "I love you Robert." she said softly.

He hugged her tight. and kissed her softly. "I'd best let you finish with dinner. we can sit and watch the stars tonite, its going to be clear. In the mean time I'll help your father with the chores, I believe in earning my keep." He kissed her one more time and headed out to the barn.

"Can, I help you sir?" He asked.
"well thanks for offering," her father said. "as a matter of fact you can, I need to get that fire wood in the rack next to the stove in the kitchen." "yes sir" he said and started hauling the wood.He father was amazed at his strength, he could haul ten pieces of wood at a time, well over 150 lbs. twice what he could haul himself. Between them they made quick work of the pile.

"Thank you son", he said lets wash up and get ready for dinner. You wife to be is a wonderful cook.
When they walked in the kitchen, her father whispered in her ear with a smile "watch that boy, darling, he's as strong as a bull ox!"

She nodded and watched as he left the kitchen. She turned and continued to busy herself with the dinner preparations. She watched as the men carried the wood in, placing it by the stove. She smiled as he outlifted her father. She was lucky to have him. He was kind, compassionate, and he was extremely handsome. Before long she was finished with dinner and she started to set the table. When her father came by and whispered in her ear about his strength she blushed. "Alright papa." she said and smiled. She then brought the food to the table and washed the metal she used to cook the food on before moving back to the table. She waited for her parent's to sit before she followed suit and sat at the table. "Enjoy the food." she said and smiled at her parents and her husband to be. She then bowed her head and began to say grace.

Robert was amazed at her submissive ways, and her simple humbleness. They were extremely endearing. he r cooking was magnificent too. He couldn't imagine that her mothers was any better. He ate hungrily and then topped off his meal with the best pie he had ever eaten and a cup of fresh coffee. He was a happy man. when she had finished the dishes, he undid her apron and hung it on the hook and walked his bride out to the porch swing.

The stars and the crickets were out and it was a glorious night. He held her in his arms and kissed her gently, and then she started to sing softly, He had never heard her sing before, but it charmed him and his body just melted. He had never heard anything quite so lovely. "If this isn't heaven, it should be" he said. "and you are my angel."

She began to eat after everyone was served and smiled. She hadn't realized how hungry she had been, but the wholesome meal was delicious. She served everyone a pie she had baked and after everyone was finished she gathered the plates and began to do the dishes. She smiled as he took her apron off of her and looked at him.

She walked outside with him and moved against him, resting her head on his shoulder as they sat there looking up at the stars. She began to sing a song that she had learned as a child and she closed her eyes. She couldn't have asked for a better night. She giggled at his words and kissed his cheek lightly. "I love you Robert." she said and took his hand.

Her parents looked out from inside the house and smiled. "I can see why she waited." her mother said. Her father nodded and smiled a bit. "He'd make a fine husband. Strong and a hard worker, quite reliable. And he makes her happy." Her mother smiled and nodded. "They'd have beautiful children too." she said and laughed. "He's extremely handsome."

“I love you too Cornelia,”he said. You have a voice like a bird. So beautiful and happy. Where did you learn that song? I know that one day our children will fall asleep in you lap to it, and blessed children they will be. Robert thought about his mother, still at home in Whales, she was alone now, his father having been killed in the war. He hoped that one day he would see her again before she died.

She smiled and shrugged. "I'm honestly not sure, I just remember learning it as a child." she smiled at him and held his hand. "They will be blessed to have a loving father like you." she said and looked up to the stars. She knew it was probably hard for him to leave his family in Wales behind, but she was glad he decided to come back to be with her.

"My dear, Robert said, I have work in the morning, and I dare not be late. Your father and I leave for town at quarter to six. I could sit with you all night but I must not do it and if you are fixing breakfast you need your sleep too." then he whispered "I'll meet you in thehall for a good night kiss when were ready for bed."

He took her arm and escorted her in the house and to her room then went inside his own and closed the door. He got himself undresssed and into his nightshirt. He peeked out his door and saw Cornelia doin the same across the hall. they tiptoed to each other, and met for a wet sensuous kiss. Then sneeking back to their rooms laid down to sleep an dream of one another.

A few seconds after their doors closed, so did the door to the master bedroom door and her mother's happy giggle could be heard from inside. "Mother! shame on you!" her father said as he lay in bed reading the almanac.

Cornelia nodded reluctantly at his words. "I know my love." she said and stood up. "I don't wish you to be late either." She moved inside the house with him and headed into her bedroom. She shut the door and undressed, looking at her reflection in the mirror hanging on her wall. She couldn't wait until she and Robert were wed. She wanted to be able to sleep in the same room with him, wrapped in her love's arms.

She pulled on a white linen nightdress and moved to the hallway. She wrapped her arms around Robert as they met to kiss goodnight. "I love you Robert." she said and smiled before heading back into her room. She closed the door and climbed into her bed, pulling the large quilt over her body and resting against the pillows. She closed her eyes and before long she fell into a deep sleep, dreaming of her husband to be.

The next morning she awoke before the rest of the family and started to cook breakfast, making eggs and some fresh bacon. She knew Robert would need his strength so she wanted it to be a well rounded breakfast. She smiled and looked out the window as the sun began to rise. "It looks like it will be a beautiful day..." she said to herself.

Robert woke to the smell of bacon and coffee coming from the kitchen. He pulled on his clothes, brushed his hair and teeth, and headed out to the kitchen, There was Cornelia, obviously in her element, bacon, eggs, and bisquets cooking and coffee hot on the stove. She handed him a cup and filled it with coffee when he entered the room and asked him to sit down. He was amazed at how efficient she was in the kitchen. He imagined she could feed an army if needed, and they would eat well.

Her father walked in and was met with the same steaming cup of coffee. She dished up the eggs and bacon and put the bisquets in a bowl. Robert caught her as she walked by and and gave her a kiss. Good morning darling, he said.

Cornelia smiled when Robert entered the kitchen. "Hello." she said brightly and got his coffee ready. She handed him the cup and motioned to the table. "Breakfast will be ready shortly." she said as her father entered the kitchen. "Morning papa." she said and bowed her head. Before long she had the food on the table and she wiped her hands on the apron she was wearing. She smiled as Robert kissed her as she moved by him. She kissed him back and brushed her hair out fo her face. "Good morning Robert." she said and placed a hand on his arm. "I hope you have a good day at work today." she said, sitting at the table after everyone was taken care of and began to nibble at some bacon.

Robert and her Dad finished their breakfast and each gave Cornelia a kiss as they left for the city. Her dad dropped Robert at the Mason's shop and drove the buggy to work. Robert reported to work on time and got to work with his beloved stone. It was a friend to him, it responded to the touch of his tools. He had forgotten how good it felt to work the stone. I t was heavy, and it worked his muscles shaping them in return. At the end of his day the Mason surveyed his work. obert you are a craftsman, and a fine one. Welcome to my shop.

Her father picked him up at days end he was full of stone dust but wearing a smile. They rode home together talking about work and their mutual love of a certain young woman. When Robert walked in he opened his arms to her from across the room, smiling from ear to ear.

Cornelia spent the day working and cleaning the house with her mother. "Cornelia dear, where exactly did you and Robert meet?" she asked as they were washing clothes. Cornelia smiled and brushed her hair out of her face. "When I worked to help the soldiers heal from their wounds he was one of the men under my care." she said. Her mother frowned. "Weren't you watching over the British?" she asked, standing up and looking sternly at her daughter. Cornelia looked at her mother, realizing her mistake but quickly shook her head. "They were mainly redcoats, but every now and again we got one or two patriots." she said. "He happened to be one of the few patriots we cared for." she lied. Her mouth pursed her lips but nodded. "Alright, well, at least he's not a redcoat." she said. Cornelia smiled and nodded. "Of course not mama." she said. As the day began to come to a close she looked outside every few minutes, wanting to spot her father's carriage.

She soon saw it coming up the road and she smiled. "Mama, I would like to go for a walk with Robert when he gets home, would you be willing to make dinner tonight?" she asked. Her mother smiled and nodded. "Of course, just be safe." she said. Cornelia smiled just as her father and fiancé entered the house. she saw Robert open his arms and she smiled, walking into them, hugging him tightly. "Dear, mama is making dinner tonight so we can go for a walk. Would you like to go now, or are you a little tired?" she asked him.

Robert was tired, but he couldn't remember feeling better. "Just give me a moment to get out of these dirty clothes and wash my face" he said. "Then we can walk before dinner." Robert went in the house, washed his face and hands and put on clean clothes the nearly bounded out of the house. He caught up with Cornelia in the yard, and wrapped an arm around her waist. They walked among the fruit trees on the farm and climbed the hill behind the house from which one could see the whole valley. The sat on a log at the top of the hill. Suddenly Robert grew silent. He looked down at the ground. A tear rolled down his cheek. He knew what he was facing might well be for him worse than death. He swallowed hard. " I cant do it any more Cornelia. I'm living a lie! I'm not what they think I am, nor am I who they think I am. Your parents are loving me like a son, when if they knew the truth they would hate me. I cant live this way, I have to tell them."

Cornelia smiled and walked outside, waiting for Robert to come outside. When he did she smiled and walked with him through the orchards and up the hill. She looked out over the horizon and smiled It was a gorgeous night. She looked over at Robert, only to find him crying. She bit her lip and turned to him. She shook her head at his words and looked into his eyes. "No, Robert please, just a little longer. Please if they find out now, if anyone finds out now I may never see you again. I love you, I don't want to lose you." she kissed him deeply. "Please. After we are wed we can tell I swear to you. And if that means I have to go back to England with you then I shall. But if they find out now we won't have that chance. I won't be able to marry you. I won't be able to be the mother of your children, and I want to be, so badly." she knew he was hurting, but she prayed he could hold out a little longer. She wrapped her arms around him as tears began to prickle the back of her eyes. "Please Robert, I can't lose you. Not again." she said, sobbing softly.

Robert's heart broke at her tears. He held her close. It was an awful dilemma, continue in a lie or break her heart. He steeled himself against the dread he was feeling. He knew the situation would get worse for the waiting, not better. he comforted her and told her he would wait, but in his heart he knew it was wrong. He forced a smile and then a grin, doing his level best to bring back he joy. In his heart though he knew, he could never steal her from her father like that. If they were to be married it would be with her father's permission, and full knowledge of what he was doing. They walked back down the hill and joined the family for a wonderful dinner. After dinner, he and Cornelia again spent the evening on the porch, kissed before bed and drifted off to sleep, at least Cornelia did.

The next morning Robert and her father left for work. Robert gave her a longer than normal kiss fearing it might be the last, but praying that it wouldn't be.

As they made the long ride to Richmond, Robert interrupted the small talk and said "Sir there is something I must tell you, or I will have no honor as a man. First let me say that I love your daughter with all my heart soul and mind." Her father, relizing this was serious business stopped the buggy to listen. " I would never do anything to hurt her, but as things stand now I cannot marry her." Her father frowned. "Why son?" he asked. he swallowed hard and said."Your permission was obtained with out your full knowledge of the facts. I was as I said a wounded soldier. I served honorably in the war, but I was a British conscript taken against my will by the King's Army to fight in America. I was as you say a "redcoat". A fact that pains me greatly having seen first hand the good I was fighting against. This is a great country, wronged greatly by my people, and the King. I ask you now for your forgiveness, for my sake and for your daughter's for she loves me and begged me not to do this until we were married. But sir I could deceive you no longer , and could not steal your daughter from you, having already contributed to the cause that killed your son." He hung his head. " I will understand if you cannot forgive me, and if that be the case I will leave you here and now and leave your family in peace. But if you can forgive me, I promise to be a good husband, and son, and patriot, for I have come to love this land."

He couldn't look up to face the man he had so badly deceived. He waited for the words, he feared would come, the hate and revulsion and rejection. Finally after a long pause her father spoke. "You.........are a man of honor, and love, and kindness, and good. A strong man, both of body and moral fiber. You are the the things we fought the war to keep alive, the things my son died to keep alive. You are not a redcoat. and I am proud to have you for my daughters husband, and proud to call you a son. Raise your head young man, you have nothing to be ashamed of. We have work to do. I will explain this to my wife this evening. Please leave that duty to me."

Cornelia went through the rest of the night scared. Scared she would lose the one thing in her life she cared the most about. Yes, she loved her family and she knew they would always be there for her, but the prospect of losing Robert was unbearable. She kept a mask on, glazing over how she really felt with a smile and happy attitude, something she had learned to do so well during the war. She sat quietly with him on the porch swing, holding onto him afraid by the time tomorrow came she'd be alone again. After they kissed good night Cornelia retired to her room and sobbed softly, rocking back and forth, trying to get the thought of losing him out of her mind. After a while she had cried herself into a restless slumber.

The next morning she awoke, made breakfast and watched as he and her father left for Richmond. She kissed him deeply, not wanting to let go of him. She knew she must though. She went through her day doing her chores, cleaning the house and preparing jams and sauces for the upcoming winter months. She had always loved the fall growing up, the changing colors of the leaves, the cool weather. She finished her work and stole away to her room, picking up the letters Robert had written to her during the war. She cried softly as she read them, tears dripping onto the paper, smudging the writing slightly. She hadn't realized how much she had fallen for him, but these letters reminded her of the man she had cared for two years ago and the man she loved so fully today. She put the letters away and laid on her bed praying that everything would be alright. She glanced out of her window and soon saw the carriage making it's way down the road, afraid that when it came to a stop only her father would exit it. She held her breath and waited for the moment of truth.

Robert got out of the carriage and saw her at the door. He took two steps toward her, and opened his arms. When Cornelia reached him he hugged her hard, she wanted to squeal, but Robert covered her mouth. Where is your mother, her father asked. As she answered, her father pressed a gold piece into Robert's hand and said Go son, take her to town and get a nice dinner. Her mother and I need to be alone, and so do you two.

Cornelia's face had a million questions on it, she looked worried, but Robert reassured her with as smile as they got back in the buggy and headed back to Richmond for the Evening. I told your father he said plainly. I ask his forgiveness as a man, and he honored my request. We need to set a wedding date. In the meantime we are going out to dinner and dancing.

Your father must now tell your mother. He asked that I leave that to him.

Cornelia ran to the door when she saw two figures in the carriage and her heart nearly jumped out of her chest. She ran into his arms and buried her face into his shoulder, fighting back tears. "Robert." she whispered, kissing him softly as she smiled up at him, wiping her eyes feverishly. She smiled at her father when he told them to go into town and nodded. She turned to Robert and smiled. "I have to get changed darling. I'm in my work clothes." she said and turned to quickly change into something a little nicer. She came back out of the house a few moments later wearing a pale pink dress with little flowers sewn into it.

She got into the carriage with Robert and shook her head as he explained what happened. She was glad her father had been so understanding, but her mother might be a different story. She had been very angry when her brother was killed and she still wasn't completely over it. She smiled as they head into Richmond for dinner and dancing. She kissed his cheek lightly and smiled. "I'm sure we'll have a wonderful night tonight." she said softly.

Robert followed her in the house. "for goodness sakes be quiet" he said, we weren't supposed to come in. Robert quickly changed from his dirty shirt and pants and brushed his hair. He took her quietly out the back door. She looked pretty in her pink dress and Robert couldn't have been prouder. As they rode back into Richmond Robert felt as if the weight of the world had been lifted from his shoulders. They went to dinner and then to the dance hall where they danced together for more than two hours. Robert heard the clock chime 10. We must go my dear, it was fun, and I love you, but we have an hour ride home and must rise at 5 bells. I have work to do tomorrow.

They climbed into the carriage and Robert started the long drive home on the dark road. He talked quietly with Cornelia as they rode. "Your mother is in pain tonight you know, and not just for your brother, but for you. You have deceived her as I deceived your father. My dear, to have peace you must go to her tomorrow when you to are alone and heal the wounds that are there. Only the truth will do that. Please do that for your own sake, but also for your mother's. We want our wedding day to be joyous, not marred by deceit." he held her close and kissed her. what he had just asked of her was difficult.

Cornelia laughed a little as he scolded her for going inside. She had to get changed though. There was no way she was going to town in a filthy house work dress. After she got dressed and left the house she waited by the carriage for Robert. Once they got in and were on their way she felt relieved and extremely happy that she was still able to be with him.

They had a great night out and she wished it didn't have to end but she knew he was right. It was another early start for them tomorrow. She walked back to the carriage with him and got in. On the ride home she listened to him. She knew he was right, she just didn't want to have to face her mother in that aspect. "I will Robert. I know it hurt her, it's just I had to do it to protect our love." she said. "But I can understand why it would hurt her..." She kissed him back and smiled. "I'll talk to her, I promise." she said.

It was near midnight, when they arrived home, the house was dark and quiet. Robert walked her to her room and kissed her gently the went to his own to change. He emerged from the room a few munutes later in his night shirt and found her waiting for him in the dark. he hugged her to him and there bodies formed to one another as he kissed her deeply. He could feel the warmth of her body through the thin satin night dress. He was filled with passion, and almost overcome by it, but he finally he broke thekiss and sighed. Oh Cornelia, we need to be married soon!

She entered the house silently and moved to her bedroom, changing out of her gown into her thin nightgown. She let her hair down and brushed it out before waiting in the hallway for Robert. She leaned against the wall and smiled when she heard his door opened. She wrapped him in her arms and kissed him deeply, smiling as she felt his strong arms around her body. She licked his lips gently and closed her eyes as they kissed. She wished they were able to sleep with each other, wrapped in his arms as she slept. She nodded at his words. "The sooner the better." she said softly, looking up into his eyes. She kissed him one last time before retiring to her bedroom, shutting the door and crawling into her bed.

The next morning rolled away too soon and she laid in bed, staring out the window into the darkness. She didn't want to get up, she was exhausted, but the sooner she got breakfast made and cleaned up the soon she could go back to sleep. She sighed and stood up, making her way into the kitchen to make some eggs and a steak for everyone to eat. She yawned and stretched, waiting to hear the footsteps of other people waking up.
