Zack walked into his apartment with his 'mother'. It wasn't really his but it should be. After all, the detective had taken him in because of their close relationship. While at the youngest of a 8 year old, nearly 10 years have passed. Zack was happy and graceful of his 'mother' to take him in.

However, she was mostly between both motherly and a smart detective around him. Sharp questions and a sharp mind she was really. Sometimes, he felt as if she was the same as the day they met before: total strangers.

He walked into the apartment and dropped his school bag. "HOme..." he called out as he walked to the kitchen.

Charlotte was sitting at the table, her work spread out around her as she tried to finish up her day. her hair still pulled back, and she was still dressed in her work clothes; ID card and all. It seemed like no matter how much time she spent at the office she still had a ton of work to take home. Still, it was better to be home working then leave Zack all alone.

"How was your day? Anything new?" she asked still stuck in her work mode. She did her best to look away from her work, but she was trying to finish something and didn't want to break from it completely. In her mind work wouldn't take up anymore than another hour of her time, and then she could spend time with her 'son'. Charlotte hated to seem distant from him, but she couldn't neglect work no matter how much she wanted to.

"Nope" he said simply with a smile at her as he got his drink. "Tiring and borning as usual..." he said as he opened his soda. "how was work? Tiering and exicting as usual?" he asked as he walked around to the table.

"Not this week. Reports are due, so I'm doing nothing but paperwork." Charlotte sighed. She loved her job no matter how difficult it was, but she could live without paperwork. Leaning on the table, Charlotte rubbed her eyes as she tried to focus, but she was starting to hit her limit with her work. Sitting for so long didn't appeal to her either.

"I'm sorry school is so boring for you." She finally smiled as she pet his hair. Even now that she was almost an adult there were times she still saw him as the little boy she brought home all those years ago. The memory helped to break the hold work had over here, and she found herself shutting the computer and pushing everything else aside.

"What would you like for dinner tonight?" Charlotte asked him happily.

"it's not" he said smirking as he pulled away a bit. He drank his soda in no time. "So what's for dinner?" he asked as he stood up and headed to his room. Usually they ordered food since she was always busy with work but rarely cooked. He didn't mind considering that he was well fed.

"We still have some time, if you wanted we could cook something." Charlotte hated the fact she didn't cook a lot. In her mind a good mother was someone who cooked healthy meals for her children no matter what was going on. Still it seemed like no matter what she did most of the time her work took up all her time, and takeout was the only option.

"Whatever you want is fine, I just thought it would be nice to cook for a change..." Looking at him sweetly she hoped he decided on something that wasn't to difficult for her. After all she wasn't a chef, but she wasn't an awful cook either.

"Suripise me then" he said laughing a bit as he went into his room. Zack's room was just his size. It had everything basic. He walked passed his night dresser with his mirrior and removed his jacket. His curly hair was always in the way and his brown eyes were hard to see at times. His skin was light colored and his body was fair healthy.

He smiled. "Good looking huh?" he said to himself as he sat on his bed sighing from the day.

Charlotte wasn't sure what was wrong with her, but she felt like he was being distant lately. She couldn't figure it out, but she figured it was because he was getting older. Everyone always talked about their teenagers rebelling and being distant at home. Charlotte figured Zack would be different since she tried to keep him as close as possible, but she made sure not to smother him. Parenting wasn't easy, but she loved it none the less.

Looking through the kitchen she tried to think of something to make, but she was rusty in the kitchen. Over and over she searched through the same cabinets till she finally came up with something. It was easy enough to make, she just hoped Zack would be okay with it. Within no time the kitchen was full of life. The sound of chopping, pots banging, sizzling every now an then, followed by a strong smell of garlic.

The heat from cooking had caused her thick auburn hair to slip from the tie. Ever so often she was brushing the hair from her face. Charlotte was actually enjoying herself in the kitchen; it made her feel more motherly, and less like a harsh investigator.

Zack laid on his bed and looked up his labtop. Nothing much to do but play and wait for dinner. Maybe watch some TV later?

Charlotte finally cleared her work from the table, and put it off to the side. If she felt motivated enough she might go back to it once Zack had gone to bed, but she doubted it.

"Sweetie, dinner will be ready in soon. Get washed up" She ordered from the kitchen. Charlotte wasn't sure what he would think, but he normally liked whatever she made. Which wasn't much, but she really tried this time. Cooking some fish in lemon and garlic, and some mixed veggies. It seemed like a motherly dish, and it would be healthy for her 'son'.

Zack came out of the room a few minutes later. "What's for dinner-" he saw the interesting dish she set out. Sea food was something that he didn't have often. "wow, this is new" he said smiling as he sat down and looked at what she made.

"Well you asked for a surprise." Charlotte replied as she sat down. She hadn't realized how much energy it took to cook, but then again she was sitting down most of the day. So really it was good for her to get up and do something; it also took away most of her frustration from work.

She didn't say much at dinner simply because Zack wasn't talking either. Maybe there was something bothering him; a bully at school or maybe he didn't think she was doing a good enough job. Charlotte was drowning in thought at she ate slowly acting like his actions weren't worrying her.

However Zack looked ok. He enjoyed the meal and ate as much as he wanted. To her happy joy, he asked for more and more. Finally, he finished and sighed.

"Great dinner Charlotte" he said happily to her. "Never had sea food often so this was good...love the lemon and garlic" he commented as he drank to wash and calm down his stomach. Zack usually called Charlotte by her name considering that she wasn't his real mother and knew that from the begining. She was like a good step mother only she raised him up to his age now.

"I'm glad you liked it, but maybe next time you could help me." She replied as she got up to clear the table. All she wanted was to be a little closer like a real family. It seemed the older he got the more they acted like roommates. maybe it was just the fact they weren't blood related that made it that way.

"If you want we can go out sometime this weekend. Just to get out of the house for awhile." Charlotte was just trying to reconnect with her 'son', but she couldn't help but think she was trying to hard.

"Sure, anything's good" he said to her second suggestion. As for the first, he wasn't the non lazy type in the apartment.

"Well thanks for dinner" he said as he gave a small kiss on the cheek with her and smiled as he walked back to his room.

It was nice to know he was still open to the idea of spending time with her, but he just wasn't the same little boy she brought home. That could have been her problem, she was still thinking of him as a child. He was an adult now, and she would have to get use to that. Even if it did make her feel like she was losing her 'son'.

She was to tired to clean the kitchen completely, but she did a fair job, and figured she'd leave the rest for tomorrow. Charlotte just went to her room that was beside her 'sons' room, but a linen closet was between them. The house was a fair size for their small family, but sometimes when she brought home men it made it a little awkward. Thinking on it now she hadn't been on a date in some time. She just couldn't find a guy who could work with her busy life. it drove her crazy that she couldn't find anyone, but she couldn't give up her job. Charlotte just figured this was how her life was going to be.

Zack didn't mind the apartment that they lived in. It was just their size and close to everything: the mall, the school, shops, everything he needed.

However, Zack did plan on moving out for college. It was 25 miles away and he thought that ti would be better just to sleep at the dorms rather than dive 30 minutes to it. He laid on his bed and looked on his labtop again.

Charlotte tried to sleep, but it seems like no matter what ever so often she'd wake up. Her head was throbbing and an the heat was making her sweat. Getting up to fix the temperature, she found herself completely awake, but it was only a little after 2am. If she didn't sleep soon she wouldn't be able to keep awake for work. Trying to get back to sleep, Charlotte tossed and turned. Her clothes were damp from sweating, but she didn't want to shower and possibly wake her 'son'.

Stripping from her clothes she crawled back in bed. Her head was pounding, her body was uncomfortable, and there was nothing she could do to fix it. Closing her eyes she began to breathe deeply and finally drifted off to sleep. Her dream started off strangely enough, but suddenly it became more and more intense. Her breathing quickened, she whimpered as she tossed and turned. It was arousing to the point she felt as though she'd slept all through the night when she was only asleep for about an hour. Clinging to her pillow she found comfort in the feeling she wasn't alone.

Zack was still up at this time playing world of warcraft. The addicting game had taken another victim as he couldn't stop leveling his goblin rouge. The game was that fun for Zack. He could hearCharlotte getting up and chaning the temperature from the sounds. However, he paid little attention as he heard her get on her bed again.

By morning Charlotte felt as though she'd slept for a week. Getting ready for work she decided to ease up on her look for awhile. She left her hair down, and actually put on makeup, something she hadn't done in ages. Nothing to dramatic, but enough to boost her confidence. Knocking on Zack's door she hoped he was already getting ready for school.

"Sweetie, if you're not up you need to get a move on now." She warned him through the door. She gave him a moment to reply, but she began to think he was still sleeping. Opening his door she called out of him again.

"Zack, come on you don't want to be late."

However, Zack had left early than what she thought. As it turns out, he was becoming more and more responsible with his on time for school. His room was clean and his labtop was on the table so he didn't bring it. Everythign was in it's place.

Charlotte was surprised since normally he would still be in bed. Times were changing for them, and she didn't even notice everything was changing till now. Maybe he was tired of living here, with her. Or maybe there really was something wrong at school. Now Charlotte just had to decide, did she want to go to work, or go see what was wrong with her 'son'.

She could split the day. After all, it is the mothers job to check up on her 'son'. So Charlotte went off to the school, but she wanted to make sure he wouldn't notice her. So just walking in the building really wasn't ideal, but she had no idea where he would be in the sea of rooms. So she wondered for a short time. her long black coat covered to about her knee, but there was no way to hide her face. So she just took it slow and did her best to not be seen.

"Oh Ms. Charlotte!" A boy said appearing next to her. A friend of Zack's who met Charlotte every so often. "How are you? What are you doing here in the school?" he asked curiously as he only saw her through Zack at his place.

Charlotte felt herself jump under her skin, it was actually pathetic since she was trained to be better prepared for surprises.

"Oh, I...I was just dropping off some updated paperwork." She lied through her smile. There was no way to deny she was here if Zack asked now. At least she could think of why she was there, paperwork was slightly vague. Wait, she was the mother she didn't have to explain herself.

"Why aren't you in class, if you're skipping I'm going to inform your parents." She told him in a loving tone.

"I am not" he said defensive. "I am going to meet with my student advior for my classes next year.....and what updated paper work are you talking about?" he asked raising a eyebrow as HE was suppose to be here.
