Rio
Age: 19
Height: 5’11
Weight: 155 lbs
Born a member of the nomadic Key’nar people, Rio exhibited a great talent for magic at an early age. While this gained him a position as the apprentice to the clan’s shaman, he found himself looking more to the outside world. Even as a child, he craved discovery. He didn’t want to remain as a keeper of the old. He wanted to be a chronicler of the new. So when he was eleven, he left, heading to the tamed lands of the Hedarno Empire. There, he became a student of the renowned Hedarno Magic Academy.
When he was nineteen, Rio graduated at the top of his class. As such, he was given a gift: his own tower in which to live and conduct experiments. He had requested it be on the coast of the Aracosta province, a region on the fringes of the Empire. It had plenty of what he needed to conduct his studies: Monster Girls.
You see, humans were unique among all of the beings of the world. They were born with little natural mana, easily dwarfed by that of other races. To compensate, humans had to engage in rituals and meditation to draw mana from nature. They also couldn’t use magic as freely as others. While many could instinctively use magic from a young age, humans had to engage in rigorous training to use similar spells.
All of this could lead to an outside observer to thinking humans were weaker than other races, but that was far from true. Humans had one advantage that had led them to become the dominant race. For most races could only generate certain types of mana. These were also the only types of mana that they could use. A mermaid was never going to be able to cast a fire spell. But humans could use any type of magic, leading to an almost unfair advantage in warfare. They could use fire spells, ice spells, lightning spells, earth spells, and so on. With enough well trained and well prepared mages, humanity was nigh unbeatable in large scale conflicts.
For Rio, he sought to fix what he had often viewed as a barrier in the way of human magic potential: mana. Without the natural generation ability of other races, gathering it was always painfully slow. It’s why the times in history that they had lost were in long, drawn out battles. They just couldn’t replenish their reserves. But he sought to fix this through experimentation. If he could find magical beings that could generate mana naturally and find ethical ways to draw the mana from them, he could overcome that wall that always impeded his ancestors.
Unfortunately, it was in pursuit of that research that found him freezing his butt off on the side of a mountain while being pelted with rain. He had spent two days searching for a candidate to try and convince to join him. Tragically, he couldn’t just put up a sign and wait. He needed to go out and find them.
After over an hour of rainfall, he decided to call it quits for the day. Knowing home was too far away to be able to make it back safely, he found himself heading for a cave in the side of the mountainside. Far from luxurious, but it would be warmer and drier at least. That was all he could ask for now.
