As the battle raged to its crescendo, the beautiful white landscape had been streaked crimson with blood. From her safe position, she could only hope that the bodies that littered the field all belonged to the enemy, her crosshairs quickly scanning the battlefield for potential threats. "Hm. Pretty good vantage." She mumbled once more to herself, her high position giving her sight of the entire enemy line. Releasing the safety of her rifle, she took a deliberate, careful aim. As the crosshair hovered over her unfortunate target, the tip of her slender index finger found the curved nook of her cold steel trigger... Bang.
Two hours later...
The battle had finally ended. The sniper had slung her rifle over her shoulder as she prepared for the lone journey back to base. Trudging through heavy snow, Kai's mind was preoccupied with delectable thoughts of warm bread and a cozy nap. It took nearly an hour to climb down from the mountain she had scaled and by the time she had made it back to camp, the snow's frigid storm had given way to a tranquil evening moonlight. "Halt! Identify yourself!" A voice shouted from the nearby gate, which marked the entrance to their base camp. Two hours later...
"Sergeant Major Kai Schulen. You can lower your weapons." The marksman waited for the gate guards to lower their rifles before drawing closer. Though the guards at the camp gate weren't a part of her squad, they had become quite familiar with the Sergeant, since she would frequently return separated from her squad due to battlefield conditions. Though, even such familiarity still made Kai err on the side of caution, as the guards were always itching for a slice of action, their trigger fingers were much looser than that of a seasoned veteran. "Has the rest of my squad returned?" She asked as she approached the gate.
"Sorry about that. We can never be too careful." The guard explained, before taking a gander at the Sergeant's question. "Yeah, Easy Squad came in about twenty minutes ago, though some fancy suits wanted to meet with them."
"Fancy suits?" Kai asked softly, her eyes widening with minor interest. "What do you mean?"
"Some higher ups from the top brass. You know, the usual, pencil-up-their-ass types." The guard explained, grinning nonchalantly at his own, crude joke. "They came just this morning and have been asking... no demanding to see some of the more veteran squads. They've already talked to Squad A and Squad 32, but were especially interested in your squad."
The news was quite worrisome to Kai. Anytime the higher ups were involved in something, it meant that either something bad was about to happen... or that something bad was already happening. With a brief sigh, Kai trudged past the gate guards. "Thanks." She waved as she made her way into the camp. As she moved, she paid little attention to the soldiers that were moving about the area, not noticing at first that the camp was... livelier, than usual. Soldiers that previously sat on their asses all day and did nothing were now digging trenches, moving boxes and running laps around the camp. It wasn't until she had almost reached the barracks when she was beginning to notice that something was different about the base.
As she opened the door and moved into the barracks, her amber gaze caught the glimpse of a familiar face. "Lieutenant Riley Miller." Kai snapped into a salute, stiffening her posture as her hand came to her forehead. It didn't take the eagle-eyed sniper long to immediately notice the metal briefcase that was sitting at the Lieutenant's feet. As she saluted, she wondered why the blonde haired lieutenant was in her barracks. She was also curious as to why none of the other squad members that she normally bunked with were around. "May I ask what you're doing here, Lieutenant?" Her voice was calm, though it was clear that she was quite confused as to what exactly was going on.
