Note: This is a draft of a world I wrote up in my German Class
Background
"The race against technology is one that we're losing. Whenever we make take a step, technology takes two. Eventually, it will overtake us, destroy everything we built. We'll be no different than the demons below us."
- Lord Runesmith, before the Great Collapse
Albion was once a country of peace and prosperity. It was a country made up of a confederation of kingdoms, each led by lords aimed towards assisting each other during times of need. These kingdoms each house separate races. Albion was a place where those of all races can find safety and hope for a better future. Through technological advances, resources were abundant and the commonplace found riches available in daily life. All nations began to assimilate, leading to the unity under one flag. The growing number of people and rising quality of life lead to a need to find a better power source. Now spurned on by a newfound need for more energy, Albion scientists looked downward. They believed that if they can harness the power from within the core of their planet, they will be able to supply power to all that need it. As they mined downwards, they found more than what they were looking for. This mine created an entrance to the underworld, building a gate for Hell's denizens to escape through.
The Great Collapse
With the bridge between Hell and the surface finally open, hell's corruption began to pour out spreading through the surface. This corruption was a black gas-like substance that transformed those who it came in. contact with, turning whatever it came in contact with into a corrupted variant. Plants grew dark and sickly. The environment looked as though it were polluted and dead. Sentient life that was too weak to resist the corruption suffered changes to their minds. Animalistic instincts dominated logic and morals, effectively turning people into monsters and beasts themselves. The corruption wasn't the only thing that escaped Hell.
The Demon Lord's Army
Monsters and beasts looked at the Great Collapse as an opportunity to claim a part of the surface as their own. Only with these instincts were they capable of overwhelming much of Albion. The armies of Albion were able to put up some resistance within the walls of their castles and forts, effectively creating pockets of purity within the corruption. The Demon Lord, upon hearing about these pockets of resistance, sent his generals to the surface to eliminate them. One by one, the Albion resistance fell. Fighting the beasts, monsters, and even their corrupted allies became far too much. The Demon Lord used Albion's own technology against them. Satisfied with his victory over the overworld, he returned back to the Underworld, giving his generals dominion over portions of the ruined Albion kingdoms.
The Heroes
Not all people fell to the corruption. Many were strong enough to resist and fight. Some managed to even thrive and gain fame from this constant skirmish. Those people were known to the remaining people of Albion as heroes. One the pockets of resistance fell, the heroes were either killed or captured if they weren't able to escape. Those women unfortunate enough to become captured were tortured, forced to be used as a breeding tool to give birth to strong monsters. The men were corrupted, serving as leaders of small armies against any sign of an insurrection.
The Seven Deities
One detail to note about the Heroes is that they all fell under one of the seven deities. Their piety varied between them. Each deity has their own agenda, causing disagreement between themselves and usually their heroes as well. Their temples were built all over Albion, each immune to corruption. The last true safe havens, far from each other and usually unwilling to work with one another. To more pious they are to their deities, the more they match the common follower stereotypes.
Lumi, Goddess of Light and Purity
- Her aim is to protect the innocent and purge the corruption. Her temples tend to be hospitals where the sick get healed. Absolutely hates Vex. Followers are considered friendly and willing to purify those they deem needing it.
Vex, God of War and Chaos
- His aim is to return all things back into it's natural, chaotic state. His temples tend to be arenas where all violence is welcomed. Abhors Lumi. Followers are extremely strong and welcoming to powerful members. Those who are considered weak should avoid these temples.
Noux, God of Science, Knowledge, and Stories
- His aim is to record and protect information. Usually, his temples are considered to be libraries. Shows disdain towards warriors. Shows Favor to intellectuals. Followers are very intelligent, usually using the best technologies and magic.
Fate, God of Time and Balance
- His aim is simply to keep time going. Neutral to all that occurs around him. His temples are watchtowers. They remain well maintained as monsters avoid these areas. Even the demon lord himself knows that Fate is required to keep the universe going so these temples are under strict protection from both corrupted and noncorrupted. Followers are powerful yet extremely difficult to persuade for help.
Cyrene, Goddess of Nature and the Forest
- Her aim is to protect the forests and its inhabitants. Their temples are found either above or below great trees. Followers tend to be a bit xenophobic.
Aqua, Goddess of the Waters
- Her aim is to protect the ocean. Her temples are usually found near bodies of water. Her emotions are unstable just like her followers.
Yin, Goddess of Life and Death
- Her aim is to assist people to the afterlife and bring in new life. Her temples are usually found next to graveyards. Those who follow her remain at peace during all times, seeing death as only just another stage of life.
