After the deaths of King Robert and Ned Stark, all of Westeros broke into war. The Seven Kingdoms were at each other's throats, making powerful friends and enemies at every turn. The North was no excuse. After her beloved Ned was wrongfully accused as a traitor of the throne by the Boy King and his mother, he was sentenced to be executed in front of all of King's Landing with Ser IIyn Pane using her own husband's sword, Ice, to do behead him. Naturally, the North was outraged and Catelyn was sorrowful. Ned was her everything and to know that his name was forever associated with traitors was so painful, many of her nights alone in her chambers was filled with nothing but crying. Ned may not of been perfect, having fathered a bastard now at the wall with a woman he refused to name, but he was still the man she loved and father to her children. It didn't make sense. Ned loved Robert. Robert was a brother to him. Why would he ever betray him or the throne? He was a man of honor. Ned would never do such a thing without reason. Something wasn't right and the rest of the North agreed with her. With Ned gone, her eldest son Robb had become the new voice of the North and demanded that his sisters Sansa and Arya be returned to the North immediately along with his father's body so that he may be buried in his rightful place. However, when the throne refused to do so, the North rose up against the throne and its people chose Robb to be their king to lead them to victory.

And led them to victory he did, again and again. With every battle the North fought against the crown, they witness victory time and time again, even managing to capture Jamie Lannister as their hostage in hopes to see Sansa and Arya returned to them in exchange for him. Robb, with his direwolf Grey Wind by his side, led the North with impressive skills far beyond his years. Behind him though, was his mother. Robb was smart and strong, but he was also young and needed someone to guide him on the right path. Unfortunately, when it comes to war, one must make sacrifices for the chance of victory. To cross into territory not of their own to encounter the Lannisters in battle, Catelyn was forced to promise her son's hand to a Frey girl. She hated having to do it, but it was what needed to be done. However, when Robb took interest in a woman who wasn't a Frey and married her without consulting his mother, the Freys were understandably furious with the North. The Freys sent word to Robb that they will no longer be supporting the North in the war effort and were even considering joining sides with the crown instead due to his treachery. The mother in Catelyn was happy to see her son marry a woman he loved, but the intellectual part of her knew he could of very well given away the North's chance of victory with one move driven by love and passion. However, her son's decision left Catelyn with a decision of her own. A raven arrived not long ago from the Summer Isles, offering 4000 elite men to aid them, only on one condition: a lady noble from the Starks would have to marry a minor lord from the Isles. With Sansa and Arya trapped in King's Landing, there was only one noble lady left to the Stark name, Catelyn herself. The idea of marrying another man so soon after her beloved Ned's horrible demise was almost too much to bare, but after much thought, she realized she had no choice. If she wanted Robb to get revenge for his father and see his sisters back home safely, this was a sacrifice she would have to make, for the sake of her children and grandchildren to come.

The arrangements were made and agreed upon and soon Catelyn would see herself approaching the Summer Isles. Robb tried to convince her to stay, but after realizing that his mother's mind was made up, he gave up and solemnly helped arrange her safe journey there. Worry began to plague her mind. Catelyn wasn't as young as she once was and she had given birth to five wonderful children, but she couldn't be sure if she could bear anymore. Her husband-to-be would be expecting her to carry his child, as all men in marriage expected from their newly wedded wives. If she did somehow became pregnant, it might be the end of her, but for Robb, she was willing to take that risk. She knew nothing of this minor lord or what he was like. As far as she knew she was going into the hands of a cruel man, but if she had to suffer at his hands so that Robb can win this long and tiresome war, then she would take it. Part of her was hopeful though. After all, Ned wasn't the man she originally was going to wed. His brother was intended to be her husband and she bonded with him immensely for it, but when he died, she was married to Ned instead. She grew to love Ned though and loved him dearly. While she didn't see herself ever falling in love with anyone as much as she loved Ned, perhaps she could grow fond of this lord. The thought was comforting, but she would never truly know until she saw him with her own eyes and soon enough, she will.
