Jessica helped her mom and her stepdad move their luggage into the boot of the car - they were going away on a friends' holiday for the next two weeks at least, and she felt a little sorry to see them go. It was the first time they had left the house since her mom had gotten married to her stepdad just a little over half a year ago, and Jessica knew that the holiday would do them much good. Still - she would much prefer it if she wasn't left alone in the house with that prat of a stepbrother. She hugged her mom goodbye, and shook hands amiably with her stepdad as she stepped back and watched the car drive off. Sighing and running her hands through her long dark hair, Jessica began walking back to the house. How very like her stepbrother to just slack off and watch other people do the work of moving luggage, she thought bitterly.
She moved back to her room, determined to ignore his presence in the house until at least dinnertime, picking up a book and laying around in her armchair to read.
