“Kayal!” Her mother called as she brought the overflowing plate to the center of the table Ayaka would pull out her chair and sit down , her legs crossed and back strait. She was wearing her comfortable clothes, a Big oversized sweater over a soft pair of shorts, When she sat sown, the hem of the sweater sunk over the shorts. She leaned forward, reaching for one of the foodstuffs on her table and a loud clack of her Mother’s ivory chopsticks hitting the ones in her hand stopped her. “ Wait for your brother!’
She made a pouting face and looked to her father who lowered his paper.
“ Your mother is right, don’t be so fat.” Aya laughed a bit nervously, and thankfully her brother lumbered down the stairs. Of course he looked as if he’ just rolled out of bed. She’d already worked out and showered and dried her hair. It was pulled back with a single pin as she bowed her head and her father made a quick prayer before reaching for food himself. The whole affair was relatively quiet, until her brother piped up, telling a story about a pregnant girl in his program. Ayaka ate a bit more quickly then. Knowing where the conversation was headed.
“ Is she black?” “Daddy!” Her father looked at her, and she crumpled a bit in her scolding of his behavior, mumbling as she turned her attention to her food. “ That doesn’t have any bearing on…”
“ Any bearing!?! Ha! Half my business is treating these black woman who have Stds because their most recent baby daddy can’t keep it in his pants. Some as young as you Ayaka! Why there was even one from your school! Stupid scholarship programs, why are fees so expensive if they are just going to let the dregs of society in for free? Maybe an all girls school would be better” Her father continues and a flush rose to her cheeks. She wouldn’t argue or tell her father off for being racisit. Even though he was. She’d focus on her meal. Until she heard her name again, this time from her mother.
“Aya is a good girl, a good girl who is going to be late! Go change, I drive you.” She nodded and set down her half finished breakfast and darted up the stairs, coming back down minutes later in her schools uniform. The jacket slung with her bag over her arm, a deep navy blue, matching the pleated blues of the skirt.

“ Aya, over here!” She was still in uniform, though so was the girl calling her, surrounded by a group of people, one of which she guessed was her friend’s boyfriend. She picked up the coffee and headed over, sitting next to her friend. “ Guys, This is Aya, Aya, these are my brother and his friends, and this…”A pause and the girl hugged the guy on her other side. “ Is Chuck.” Ah, the boyfriend. Aya lifted her hand in a little wave. “ Aya is coming out with us tonight. Assuming she managed too get away from her parents.” The girl eyed her and Aya, who was in the middle of a sip of her coffee almost sputtered.
“Yes- I told them I was staying with a friend to study for a test. So if they call.”
“ Don’t worry. Moms cool. Its just a house party anyway, not like we are taking you to a drug den.” Aya joined in the laughter nervously. Considering Most of the crowd. Her parents wouldn’t see the difference.”
