Now, as to what it is that I seek... As the title says, I'm looking to get into the grind of building up a kingdom/empire. Can be from the ground up or perhaps I am the king of a small kingdom and want to expand, etc. The setting I'm looking for is fairly open, so I'm definitely fine with suggestions but here's some examples:
Post Apocalypse: The world has fallen apart in wake of a new virus, a nuclear detonation, zombie apocalypse, or some other world ending event. Survivors have managed to continue on by looting and banding together, however everyone knows that there needs to be a change to things. Living a nomadic lifestyle will mean that the resources are consumed without any production, so its time to put down roots, build a home and start thinking long term.
Earth's Expansion: With a dying planet, humanity turned to the stars for salvation, launching ark ships to hopefully find a new planet that hadn't been ravaged. While many of the ships have simply drifted off into the nothingness, ours was one of the lucky. We found a planet that, though different, is close enough to Earth for us to live. As we touch down, or possibly crash down, we are tasked with learning from our past mistakes while we build anew, perhaps interacting with the local inhabitants.
Alien Test Subjects (Stole the basics of this plot): What does an advanced alien species do when their devotion to science allows them to unlock the secrets of space travel? Continue to conduct experiments, naturally. This race of aliens abducts members of the countless myriad of sentient species throughout the universe and deposits them on a planet of their creation, imbues each with a special power or ability, places apex predators from one of the worlds (Dinosaurs, for instance) and then simply...observes, making a study in survival, evolution and many others.
Another World: Stumbling into a fantasy world, trying to learn the basics of this place while also capitalizing on the knowledge of the modern world to set up a small place where one can feel safe. As time passes, this safehouse turns into a small village, city, and keeps expanding.
