Madhuri Kapoor hummed happily to herself as she carried another handful of sharpened stakes to the perimeter of the abandoned farm she and her family had made their home since the outbreak. The fall of civilization had come very suddenly with an epidemic of a virulent disease which caused it's victims to become violent, flesh hungry monsters whether they became infected before or after death. Fleeing their home in the city, she and her family had found a deserted farm to make their new home, the dead were drawn to the noise of the cities and so this was the safest place for them for now and they were making good use of their time, fortifying the perimeter of the farm for when the day came that the hordes of walking corpses would come for them.
In the panic of the outbreak the Kapoor family had suffered a great tragedy, Madhuri had lost her husband and was forced to watch in horror as he was torn apart by monsters but the circumstances did not allow her allow her time to grieve or mourn him. Instead her heart and mind had closed off the part of her that loved him and her mind had created a fantasy to deal with what happened. The Kapoor family had been devoutly Christian for more than 30 years and Madhuri was now using her religious beliefs to deal with her reality and she now expounded the belief that her family had been blessed by God and was chosen to seed the new world which would rise from the ashes of the old.
Madhuri's daughter, Priyanka had tried to reason with her mother but this only made her angry and Madhuri would admonish her as being possessed by the devil, so for now she kept her silence as her mother steadily built a story which was even more detached from reality as each day passed and then she discovered something which she took as undeniable proof of their divine purpose. On several occasions during their journey, her son Raj had been bitten several times while defending her and her daughter and not only did he not turn like everybody else, his body appeared to heal very quickly from the wounds. Madhuri declared that this was a miracle and proof of her son's divinity, Raj had always been her favorite and Priyanka only saw this as another example of her mother favoring her brother but she didn't dare to contradict her, especially not in her fragile state of mind.
"Here you are, my son" Madhuri said cheerfully as she set the stakes down next to Raj who was busy driving the stakes into the ground outside the perimeter fence in order to skewer any zombies which tried to approach the farm. "It is almost sunset" she said as she touched her son tenderly on the shoulder. "We should return to the house and pray together for your sisters soul, she does not believe in you yet" she said with great reverence for the man her son had become evident in her adoring eyes.
