Sun beat down upon, it had been a long cold winter and now spring was in the air, birds chirped, flowers began to bloom in all their vivid colors. People stepping from the house letting the sun warm them down to their souls. But on this bright spring day there was one soul the sun could not warm but perhaps needed the sun warmth most of all.

Alaina sat in the carriage looking out at the beautiful world before, but now nothing seemed beautiful. She was angry she was sad, and although she tried to hid it she was afraid. But even with so many emotions all anyone ever seen was her beauty. Her long raven colored hair, that seemed too sparkle when light hit it, her slender figure but shapely womanly curve, her lips the color of fine rubies, but it was her eyes which where a pale purple that was her most striking feature.

Her father was killed by loyalists as he spoke out against the kings rule over the people living in the colonies, she was alone in the world. Left with only her family fortune, but with no one to look after her. Being a woman of means, but with no husband yet it was decided for her that she would be given to the care of a loyalist that would soon to be her husband.

Her carriage pulled up to the grand manor, that was to become her new home, servants already rushing to unpack her things, but she just remained sitting inside the carriage staring at the place would become her prison.

George Bernard famously fought for the British Crown during the French and Indian War as a young teenager, now, as an male member of the loyalist society, he was a key figure in the British fight against the Patriots.

He owned a large manor that was also a small fort of Loyalist Redcoats fighting against the Patriots. George too often wore his own Redcoat in battle as a commander from time to time.

He was reluctant to allow the daughter of a prominent patriot into his mansion but with the British struggling to keep their own prisons secure, more and more loyalist were ask to harbor the enemy.

Loyalist strategists had assured George that Alaina would keep to herself and be no trouble at all.

At her arrival, he was in his private study with a few other army commanders when he saw the dust from her carriage on the driveway. He excused himself to walk out to greet her wearing a navy blue overcoat. He was first struck by her lovely curves, and that lovely raven hair. As he approached, he looked at her purple eyes.

"Miss Alaina, I'm George Bernard. Good to see the servants are tending to your things, I will show you where you'll be staying?" He asked. He bowed to the woman to show respect. Even the American Revolution would not stop his manors when around women.

She was lost in thought when George arrived to greet her. Her attention snapped to look at the man standing before her. She looked at him up and down before climbing out of the carriage. She had imagined this man to be and evil tyrant, but this man before her did not seem to be anything like she imagined. He was respectful and even bowed to her. “Thank you sir, but honestly this is all to much trouble perhaps it would be better if you would allow me to return my own family home, I assure you I will be safe and comfortable there.” She tried right away to be sent back to her home, she tried to do it with as much respect as possible, however it was hard.

He stared at her and thought about her request. "That's simply not possible." He looked at her. "You'll be staying here now. Until we crush the revolution. Your outcome after the war will be dependent on how I feel about your true loyalty." He grinned and smirked as he motioned for his servants to bring her things inside.

"Please follow me, allow me to show you to your quarters." He walked inside. "Anywhere on the grounds are free for you to roam, you must be back in the house before sundown and in your quarters before 8 in the evening." He walked to her wing of the house and he walked into the massive quarters and he smiled more. "Will these do?" He asked. The bedroom and living room suite and bath were lovely.

She felt angry at his response to her about returning home. And didnt pay much mind to him as they walked the halls, with him towards her room. The room was lovely with a large bed, and comfortable furnishing. “They will do, until I can be returned to the safety of my home once General Washington has succeeded in winning this war” She knew Washingtons force was great having welcomed him into her fathers home on several occasions. She would of course find some way to write him and give him use of her family home while she was away, she would want to continue any support she could.

"They promised me that you would not be difficult.. I understand your feelings and your wishes and hopes but know this. I will respect you and I hope you will respect me. This is a war that will be ended soon and His Majesty will once again reign over these colonies. I hope you understand this, I would hate for you to end up on the wrong side of a losing fight." He looked at the window and the setting sun. "Dinner is served at 6, I expect to see you then. My serpent will tend to you when you need something."

His secernts were paid well and given good payment and housing quarters. There were no slaves here. He returned to his study before dinner. He changed into a more fancy dinner coat before walking down to get some wine before dinner.

She had to clench her fist hard as he spoke. How could he assume she would want any of this and just go a long with the situation, and as he put it “not be difficult”. Her father was murdered she was ripped from her home, sent to live with the enemy that killed him. As he left the room she wanted to throw something and hard, it took everything in her not to. She sank down on the bed her eyes filled with tears. She felt so lost in that moment. Tear fell down her beautiful cheeks. It was tough for her to stop the tears once they had started. But she tried. It was until shortly before dinner she was able to gain control of herself.

Alaina changed for dinner, and looked at her face in the mirror It looked as though she had been crying and she tried to wash her face to hide it, but the signs were still there. She drew a deep breath before turning the knobs to her bedroom door and going down stairs. She wondered around the house a moment while she tried to remember the way to the dinning room. It took her a moment she found it. She entered the room silently.

"Mr. Bernard, is there anything else I can get for you." One of the servant asked him. "Leave the bottle of wine and the extra glass." He said. "And give us a few moments would you before bringing in dinner." He said and he looked at the servant closing the door.

He pulled a handkerchief from his pocket on his jacket and he came towards her. "Miss Alaina the tears aren't helping anyone. They may make you feel better but the feelings will just make it worse, be strong. That's the only way to fight a war." He handed her the piece of cloth that smelt like him.

He looked into her young eyes and her beautiful cheeks. "Here." He walked away, returning to her with a glass of wine. The shipments of wine from Europe had stopped to most of the Patriots. He figured that was was not able to have drunken much wine lately. The loyalists still had their supply routes open. He looked at her face and waited for her to take a sip.

Alaina had hoped she wouldn’t seen the signs of her tears. She didn’t wan to appear weak. She was strong, but she missed her father, as well her home, and her freedom. She was shocked however that he didn’t seem harsh about it what he said. And she tried hard to not be harsh in her response. “I am strong, but...you wouldn’t understand” she bit her lip a little. How could he understand?

She took the bit of cloth in one hand and the glass of wine in the other. She looked at the wine for a long moment before she took a sip. It felt good to have the simple pleasures of wine again. She took another sip and then sighed softly looking at him again. “Thank you”

He nodded. "You don't need to prove your strength to me." George said and smiled a little. "Let's eat." He motioned for the servants to bring dinner in and he sat down at the table and he looked at her. "What do you normally do, during the day Alaina? Read? Knit? The grounds are very large. Though you must remain on the grounds, I do hope that you won't be confined to your room and quarters all day and all night." He thanked the servants for bringing the food in. Geroge was also clearly interested in leaning more about this woman.

She moved over to the table now taking a seat. She set her glass down in front of her. Her eyes glanced at the table setting as well around the room. He did have a nice home, he clearly made a comfortable living for himself or he inherited money she wasn’t sure at this time, but she was sure she was going to find out ‘‘Reading or knitting are luxuries I did not have time for sir” She took a sip of wine “My mother passed away when i was young, and my father sisters shown me a very young age how to run a house hold, but my father also had no others heirs so he felt it important to teach me his business. So as i grew my time was split between running our house as well as working along side my father” Alaina was certainly a different girl, “how about you, do you have much time for reading or knitting” she teased him slightly
