Surreal chants filled the rocky crevasse. Echoes of blasphemous rites rebounded on granite and natural marble, the words hanging in the air like vines, winding themselves to entrap the young woman at the deepest end. She was cuffed to chains that were magically bound into the rock on either edge of her.
Behind her, hooded figures continued the ritual, letting her block between them and a rapidly-growing scarlet vortex before her. The chant continued, winding and rising until it had an iron grip on the very fabric of reality. Then there was a tearing sound as the energies of the vortex suddenly sucked past and through the rock wall behind it.
Terrible images of a dark and fiery world passed through the portal like water through a tap, with an enormous heat shimmering the air around the woman. Finally, a horrifying figure of wavering flame and shadow appeared at the portal, a horrible force crossing over into vulnerable reality.
“Raugh s’iah!” cried out the onlookers from behind the woman, but the figure had no concerns about them. His sole focus was the woman bound before him.
The figure itself was humanoid, with a tall thinness that stretched its frame beyond natural proportions. Naught else could be seen among the shadow and embers that surrounded it, save for two scarlet irises in too-human eyes.
Raugh lifted one hand to the woman, trailing smoke as he did so. He gently cupped her chin, turning her face from side to side. A deep rumbling voice said, “Are you supposed to be my lamb?”
