Chester was a widowed farmer. His wife died a year ago, and now he was alone. His wife was also unable to conceive any children, though at his age finding a woman who could bear children was hard. However at this point in his life he had save up plenty of money from his years of farming. During his harvest he hired workers to tend the fields for him.
