Hannah splashed some water on her face. She was leaning over one of the bathroom sinks in the staff washroom. She looked into the mirror where she met her puffy, blood shot eyes which suggested that she had gotten little sleep and had probably been crying recently, which she had. "Come on Hannah. Just gotta make it through this shift. Just put him out of your mind" she thought to herself nearly making herself cry by bringing him back up. The him was named Tom who was her, now, ex-boyfriend who had conveniently decided to end the year and a half relationship with her just before the longest shift she had to work that week at the restaurant. He said something about how he felt like she wasn't as 'into' the relationship as he was whatever that meant. It had already been a rough day as she had turned up late to her shift from over sleeping, she hadn't slept much from crying all night, and since she had messed up several tables orders, her boss was at the end of his patience with her so she decided to take her short break to try calm down and focus on work.
"How do people manage this" she muttered to herself sighing, if she didn't look pathetic she sure as hell felt it. A knock at the bathroom followed by a harsh tone that barked through the door "Hannah your breaks over get back out there now!" snapped her out of her daze reminding the 21 year old that she had little time to herself. Hannah returned to working the floor, taking tables orders and carrying food over to them she was putting on a smile to best of her abilities and just tried not to think of where she was going to be living next week. It was all going well until there was an accident with a loud CRASH she had run into the corner of a table tripping over and dropping the plates of food she was carrying out to table 7. The plates of food spilling onto the lap of a neatly dressed businessman who quickly stood up looking infuriated at the young girl "YOU CLUMSY BITCH" he yelled drawing the attention from several tables to the waitresses mistake. The manager had rushed over and was glaring at the fallen brunette "I'm so sorry sir, so sorry. Your meal of course is on us" he said trying to calm the angry man and not lose a customer before he turned back looking to Hannah " and YOU... you pack your things. You're leaving, now! and don't expect anymore shifts you're fired."
It was as simple as that, one bad day rolling into another. First the break-up and now Hannah was jobless "B-but..." she tried, stuttering, her cheeks glowing an ashamed red as everyone at the tables were staring at her and muttering to themselves. It was a first as she had never been fired before. Slowly she got up off the floor and dragged herself out the back, even the kitchen staff were silent as she packed her belongs. There wasn't an unlocked door from the staff room to the alleyway so Hannah had to make a walk of shame back through the crowded restaurant to the front door with everyone's eyes on her. Once she was out on the street she sat down in the nearest gutter and started to cry, "could this day get any worse" she thought to herself.
