The USS Scorpion[/i] was relatively new; only 6 years of service. The nuclear submarine was one of the fastest such vessels at sea, and it should be doing is prowling the cool waters of the Atlantic in search of prey. What is should not be doing is making an uncontrolled descent through crush depth.

Originally built as a Totem-class submarine during World War 2 for the British, the Israeli submarine Dakar was making a much more leisurely course. It was supposed to be commissioned into the Navy the following day. What it was instead doing was suffering structural collapse and imploding in the inky darkness of the Mediterranean.
Location: 50km south of Toulon, France

The Minerve was returning from another lonely patrol in the dark waters around Corsica and Sardinia. Her captain radioed the accompanying patrol aircraft that he'd see the pilot in port in less than an hour. That was the very last anyone heard from the ship or the crew.
Location: Approximately 3,000km northwest of Oahu
Date: 14 March 1968
K-129 was an aging ballistic missile submarine on deterrence patrol within easy missile range of the continental United States. Her R-21 nuclear missiles carried single nuclear warheads - enough to turn cities Seattle, San-Francisco, and Los Angeles into glass. The missile drills went well, the captain reported, and the K-129 was going to continue on patrol. No further communication was received.
Location: Washington DC

Voice #1: "The Frogs and the Israelis want answers."
Voice #2: "Screw them. I want to know about the Scorpion. You don't just lose a nuclear submarine."
Voice #3: "This is three - maybe four if the reports we're getting from SOSUS are accurate - in the space of two weeks"
Voice #2: "Well, Director. Why not show us what your agency can do? Do you a man that can look into this?"
Voice #4: "No..."
Voice #2: "What the fuck do our tax dollars buy?!"
Voice #4: "Not a man."
