PM problems

So, this is the second time I have had this experience with the PM system.

I am reading through a thread or another PM and I see that I have received an unread message, I decide to finish what I am doing before I go to check it and after a few moments it disappears.

After a random time, the PM returns to my inbox as unread, with the timestamp for when I got the initial notification that disappeared.

I don't know what causes it, but it is a bit weird.

I can't say for certain because this is not my area of expertise but I do know that its possible for members to delete an unread message from someone elses inbox.
