Alex was absolutely ecstatic and he couldn't remember the last time he had felt this way. He had just finished school, opting to skip the more public graduation to do some interviews, and just received the phone call he had been hoping for. During his last semester in college, he had interned at the local army base as an IT guy. The stuff he worked on was mostly just helping out the enlisted men with their personal computer and various other tech problems, but occasionally he also helped with more serious issues. Apparently, he had gotten such high recommendations from the base commander that he was offered a full-time job as their IT man. Alex had been worried that he may have to work at a retail store or a school, neither of which excited him, so he was thrilled when he got the job offer from the base he interned at. To mark the occasion, Alex took a selfie and sent it to his little brother with the caption 'Got the job'. He was making a silly winky face at the camera in an attempt to be cute.
Alex felt as if he was floating on air as he walked home. Normally, he would take the bus, but he felt so good, and it was such a nice day, he opted to walk the mile and a half from the local coffee shop he had stopped at after his last interview. His plan was to head home now and get started on dinner for himself and his younger brother. It was only 1:00 pm and his brother would be home at 3:00 pm from High School. He would use the time to make something special for them both, to celebrate the good news. Alex and his brother had been living together and on their own since Alex turned 16. Their parents had rarely ever been home and Alex didn't think that it was the best place for his brother to grow up, so he filed for emancipation for them both and they moved out. Life had gotten both easier and more complicated after that. For one, Alex didn't have to worry about the safety of his brother, but living in a studio apartment meant not a whole lot of privacy for either of the young men.
Once back at their apartment, he climbed the three flights of stairs to their home, which looked very similar to a dorm room with its layout and tiny kitchen, and went inside. He dropped his phone and keys on the island that split the kitchen from the rest of the living space and opened the fridge to see what there was to work with.
