"So she stabbed me, with a butcher's knife none the less. I never really knew how big the blade of a butcher's knife was until it was hanging out my stomach. I managed to lock myself in my room and call the police and a ambulance. To make a long story short I got to the hospital and she got off because of something called 'Lustful Crime' or some bullshit that allows her to be psycho. Then she just walks into my hospital room, pushes my mother out the way so she could be closer, and wants to act like nothing was wrong! Let me remind you Doc, the only reason I got stabbed was because she thought I wanted to go see Captain America because that girl in my physics course had on a Captain America shirt. That somehow ment I was cheating!"
Cody Middleton laid on a long leather couch and stared at the ceiling of the shrinks office. His heartbeat was beating faster, like it did when he recounted the worst two years of his life. Still it weighed on him heavier than any other memory in his entire life. That woman was the devil, if anything she had won because she'd be happy to know he still thought about her this long after he ran away. "It sounds like you're having a hard time letting go of this woman. Do you think about her a lot?" Doctor Ramish asked from behind his oak desk as he tapped his pen on his notepad. Cody sat up, shaking his head with a smirk on his lips. "No, really I don't. It's just, I mean she really messed with my mind. Towards the end of it she really had me thinking that maybe I was being a bad boyfriend. That maybe I deserved her rolling my car off a cliff because she saw me talking to another girl. Which by the way was my cousin, and she knew it was my cousin. Still got off with nothing more than a slap on the wrist. I'm telling you Doc, money and psycho is the most dangerous combination in the world. Her father's lawyers could have gotten her out of a school shooting with nothing more than a day of community work."
"Cody, wait, take a deep breath for me. Calm down, remember where you are. You're far away, both place and time from her." The doctor said as his patient was rambling on. Cody nodded and started to do his breathing exercises. It was true, this woman, this monster, she had plagued his mind. Someone just asking about her would trigger a thirty minute talk about what she had done to him. It was the reason he still went to therapy after all these years. She had made broke him and even after so long he was still putting the final pieces back together. "You're right, I know doc I'm much better off now. I just start going on when I talk about her."
"That's normal, people who have been through traumatic times such as yourself deal with them in different ways. When yours gets mentioned it starts coming out like a shaken up soda. You just have to take a deep breath, say a sentence about her, and then change the subject. Don't let her win over your mind."
Cody rubbed his hands together and nodded slightly before looking at his phone. "Right, change the subject. Thank you Doctor for your help, I really feel like I've had all this bottled up for so long and no way to get it out. I gotta cut our session short though. My son Oliver needs a ride back to school. My boy is trying out for varsity today. Coach recommended it himself." Cody bragged as he stood and pulled on his coat. After a small goodbye between the two Cody headed out of the building and got into his new black Cadillac. Despite the hell that was his ex, Cody had managed to make it on alright. He had switched colleges and went on to become a Plastic Surgeon. Upstate New York was a booming business for people who didn't like their bodies and they paid a shit ton to change them. Also it was far away from California and that crazy woman. He had met his wife Beth just months after coming to New York. She had been working at the hospital he was interning at and they hit it off pretty quick. She was sweet, caring, and most importantly slow with him. When he told her he'd gotten out of a abusive relationship she understood. Hell they didn't even have sex until their twelfth date. Beth was everything he could ask for. Though once they did have sex they got a bit unlucky and one of his swimmers got pass the condom. Really though it only confirmed what they wanted, Beth was the love of his life and a few months after Oli was born they got married. His princess Jessica was soon to follow. Beth quit her job to raise the kids and with a little help from her father they were doing just fine. Life turned out to be pretty great for Cody despite his past.
After a short drive home he found his son leaning against their mailbox and waiting for him. Already dressed in his pads with his practice jersey on, bringing a smile to Cody's face. Oli tossed his bag in the back seat and practically jumped into the front. "Come on, we're late!" Oli said as he buckled himself. "Try outs aren't for two hours champ."
"Yeah but I need to be their early to show coach I'm serious." Cody laughed and reached over, ruffling his son's hair. "That's my boy, you keep that up you'll be starting first game this season, no doubt." Oliver had been pushed into football at a young age and was really damn good actually. He was a shoe in for a scholarship even now as a sophomore. Cody looked over to see Oli smiling at his phone and texting someone. "Hey now." Cody said snapping twice to get Oli's attention. "Head in the game son, who are you texting?" Oli shrugged and put his phone away. "Uh, no one, it's nothing."
"Ohhhh is it a girl?" Cody asked in the most dad way possible, getting a smile and a roll of the eyes from his son. "Yes dad, a girl."
"Since when did you start talking to ladies? I thought girls didn't like nerds?"
"Says the nerd, Doctor Middleton." Oli shot back with a laugh. "She's this girl I met after practice the other day. She's uh...a senior." He spoke quietly, not sure how his dad would take that news. "A SENIOR!? MY BOY!!" Cody said punching Oli's shoulder pad. "Look at you pulling in older chicks! Ha ha! Good for you son. Hey, remember though. Always use-"
"protection, yes dad I know. Getting a girl pregnant wouldn't help getting into college."
"I know what it's like to be young and stupid. Just think with your head. The one up here."
"Dad..."
"There's no shame in it son! Listen, you'll find out about it eventually but you gotta just have a wisdom wank sometimes and clear your mind before you make decisions."
"EW DAD PLEASE!" Oli said getting a laugh from Cody.
"Just be careful son, alright?" Oli nodded as they pulled into the parking lot next to the football field. "So is this girl gonna be here today?" Oli grabbed his bag from the trunk and shrugged. "Uh, I think, not sure. Dad please don't embarrass me."
"Embarrass you? I'm suave Dr. Middleton, everyone loves me."
"Mom's right, you are a nerd." Oli said as he hustled off to the field.
"PUT SOME HUSTLE IN IT MIDDLETON!!" Cody called after him, making Oliver start running away.
Life was pretty good. He had a good job, a perfect wife, a great son, the best daughter. Things were to perfect to dwell on the past and the more he talked with his shrink, the more he knew that was true. Oliver made his way to the bleachers, taking off his brown leather jacket and sitting on it. Dressed in his tight, black Pink Floyd shirt and his faded blue jeans. His mirrored aviators resting on his nose. For the moment he smiled and just took it all in. He was gonna watch try outs, then after he'd go home to his wife and daughter. Have a perfect meal with his perfect family. Afterwards he'd enjoy a drink while cuddling up with his wife on the couch. Everything couldn't get better. What he didn't know though was how true that was. It couldn't get better, in fact it could only get worse. Because little did he know that within a hundred feet of him was the one person who could burn his life down like a dry forest soaked in gas. Life was perfect, that was going to be the last time it ever would be again.
