Dr. Lucas Nevlin was the leading scientist in Space Exploration Science, having dedicated his entire career and his 40 years of life to creating alternative way to travel through space than with a ship. For Humans, ships were to slow to travel through space. If you sent a man into space now, by the time he returned to Earth, everyone he knew and loved would be older than him. It was a real problem.
It was why Dr. Nevlin had been so adamant about creating a machine that could transport a person to a new planet in an instant. He had been so consumed by this project that he had never take a wife or has children. He was completely and utterly alone.
Finally, the day had come that Lucas ready to unveil the prototype to his machine and planned on showing it to the government to get further funding. He stood in front of a panel of high ranking officials, his lab coat hanging off of his shoulders. He was a tall man with his black hair slicked back, the sides starting to go grey, but only a bit. He was broad shouldered and wide cheated, and as he looked at the men who would judge his life's work from behind the glasses he wore, his green eyes were light with life.
"Ladies and Gentlemen." He began, typing away at his machine. "I give you the future of space travel!"
At first, the test went without a hitch, but as time went on, and just as he was sure he would get the funding for sure, something went wrong. The machine began to malfunction, and while Lucas tried to fix it, a bright light flashed, engulfing him.
When Lucas awoke next he found that he was in an alleyway, and not in the field he had been showing his machine off. He looked around dazed and confused. "What the...." He mumbled, and stepped out of the alley. His eyes widened and the poor man had to clean his glasses a few times before believing what he was seeing.
It would seem the machine had worked as intended, though not perfectly. Lucas....was not on Earth anymore. The creatures before him were strange and foreign, and as the human stepped forward to take the sights of the city in, he felt a twinge of pride. "It worked...." He whispered. "It really worked!"
Cheering, Lucas caught the attention of a few of the aliens, but he didn't care. He walked through the city taking in the scenery and trying to learn what he could. What language did they speak? What was their society like? He was like a child in a candy store, not paying attention to where he was going.
