The Pride of Mercia floated heavily in space, a giant ship designed for shipping freight across the galaxy, it had a small crew of about thirty and cargo holds big enough to store several cruise liners in them. It was an old ship and had been in service a great many years, flying between star systems, dropping off and picking up everything from consumer electronics to herds of livestock. Despite its busy routine, activity on the ship was low and had become boring in recent years. So when a distress call had come in not far from their trade route had come in, the captain had issued an order to investigate.
The call had come from an abandoned ship, derelict and floating lifelessly in space. The remaining crew on board were dead from an apparent reactor leak. What was strange though was that there appeared to be no natural cause for it. Their engineer, Daisy Reynolds, had filed her report that the ship's radiation leak had been caused deliberately, for no apparent reason.
Leaving the ship, they had picked up what cargo they could from it along with the body of one of the crew that had appeared to have suffered some strange mutations. Agreeing to keep the body under strict quarantine, Dr Amanda Grant had shipped the body to their rudimentary laboratory for examination. Once it was confirmed that the body was harmless and carried no harmful infections, it had been left in the lab for her to dissect at her leisure. Being an object of curiosity on an otherwise boring cargo run, she had become used to entertaining members of the crew as they came past to look at it.
Today she was sat at her desk, her standard issue shirt and slacks covered with her customary labcoat and her auburn hair tied back into a ponytail. She sat at her desk writing notes while preparing to open up the body. Knowing her luck though, she was likely to be interrupted just as she was about to start.
