The old car chugged along as Ryan cursed it, hitting the steering wheel like he did most Winter mornings. The 18 year old Toyota had seen better days, and with 200,000 miles on the clock, he knew that he'd have to go car shopping soon. "Another bill," he thought to himself as he cruised on to the highway, merging in to the middle lane. "That's exactly what I need." Ryan had just moved to the city around a month earlier, and the culture shock had finally settled. He grew up in a big city, but went to college in a very small town in the Midwest, so when it was time to pack up and move again, he'd almost forgotten what it was like. Things weren't made easier by the fact that the town-home he rented had a perfect view from the back yard of some of the biggest skyscrapers he'd ever seen. Nevertheless, he was happy to be there, and despite his nervousness about money, his new job in the city had come with a generous pay rise.

Looking to his left to make sure no cars were merging right, he caught sight of her again. The woman he'd seen almost every morning on the way in to the city. Not only driving along the highway, but also in the coffee shop by his office. He'd shared a stupid joke with her about coffee and then shook his head as she gave him what he presumed was a pity laugh. The coffee shop wasn't where it had ended, though. He'd seen her reading in the library, too. He was sure she'd seen him too, as she gave him an inquisitive look that seemed to say "are you following me?"

Looking across at her in the car, he laughed to himself a little. She seemed like a successful woman, drove a nice car, was quite obviously older than him, but not necessarily considered "old." She wouldn't usually be his type, apart from her gorgeous looks, but despite this he seemed to have the biggest crush on her. Several times he'd wanted to ask for her name, or even just muster up the courage to wave at her, but had chickened out at the last second.

This particular morning was different for all the wrong reasons, as he soon realised when the car behind him started to lay on its horn. Looking forward, Ryan realised he was almost half way in to the other lane, and had to pull across to correct himself, in doing so seemingly startling the woman across from him. Waving at the car behind him in an apologetic 'thank you' he turned one last time to see her looking at him. Smiling with clear embarrassment on his face, he waved back at her too, his cheeks going red, and not because of the cold weather.

Taking the exit, he dared not go to the coffee shop in case he saw her again and his embarrassment hadn't died down. Getting out of his car in the parking lot at work, he cold air hit him and he zipped up his red comfy down jacket and pulled on a grey beanie that matched his suit pants. For all his discomfort at the situation that unfolded on the highway, he still walked with a spring in his step, his Chelsea Boots clicking against the ground as he made his way inside and to his desk, knowing that he'd have to get a coffee sooner or later, or he'd fall asleep there.

He took his beanie hat off and his wavy, medium-length brown hair poofed out as he shook it with his hand. Pulling on a pair of glasses that he used for reading and computers, he flicked the monitor on and his bright blue eyes adjusted to the screen. Smiling at the small amount of emails he would have to answer to, he leaned back a little in his chair and thought about risking the coffee shop.
