The World of Aserath is on the brink of total war. The leaders of the many lands of men argue with and threaten the High Craft-Lords of the Dwarves and Gnomes, turning once steadfast allies into bitter foes. In the east, The Grand Mystic Theocracy, which values magic power above all else, is finding itself being left in the dust technologically, sparking a rising sense of resentment towards the humans and dwarves, who were once easily cowed by sorcery, but are now matching power with power using new weapons and tactics.
Nations of note:
Republic of Lionstadt: one of the "Big three" Lionstadt is the largest human dominated nation in Aserath. Due to the fact that humans are neither physically strong, or particularly attuned with magic, The republic focuses heavily on science and invention. In fact, There are no restrictions on what kind of research may be done, leading to many acts of mad science. It is not uncommon for an aristocratic lady to be walking her former husband's re-animated head, sewn onto a gorilla's body. Or for a young man to have a battery gun (gatling gun) installed in his shiny new diesel powered mech-walker. (technologically, they are very near, or at the level of europe just before the first world war.) It is also the first human nation to ever be on par, militarily, with the Grand theocracy, due to the development of firearms. Before firearms, human victories against magically superior forces were quite costly, with one general famously saying If there are less than 10,000 casualties, it was a skirmish.. However, with firearms, and modern artillery, there is little time to react, let alone put up a strong enough magic barrier to stop bullets, when the barriers were designed to halt arrows and stones.
Empire of jagged peaks A.K.A the dwarf-home mountains: Tall, craggy, inhospitable peaks, and lush, fertile, easily defended valleys mean that even before the dwarves claimed these mountains as their homes, it was a fortress like no other. Home to massive reserves of ore and coal, The dwarves rely on clockwork and steam power, finding it far more reliable, and less smelly than humanities diesel engines. However, Jagged peaks not only houses dwarves, but is a quite diverse community, made up of "civilised" goblin tinkers, Gnomish craftsmen, and halfling villages.
The grand Theocracy: Glittering towers, flying carpets, and grandiose palaces are what the name brings to mind. Built by the high elves, Ruled by immortals, and defended by noble Orcs, humans, Dark elves, and an army of terra-cotta warrior-golems, not to mention the numerous mages and Runesmiths, It has long been the greatest power in the world. Even in it's dirtiest alleys, and poorest slum, the people use enchanted items, and wear fine clothing, and cast magic. It is a way of life here, but it has stagnated, and there are rumors of resistance and grumblings of revolution. The ruling council is split, between those who wish to mix magic and technology, and those who see this as an insult to the nobility and grace of magic.
The free states/Hinterlands: In the center of the continent, between the three great powers, sit the numerous minor nations and freeholds of the hinterlands. Home to the beastmen and ever so rare "were" folk, they sense trouble oon the horizon, and some are choosing their side, while ohers desperately scramble to ensure neutrality..for if the maor players go to war, the freelands will become a battlefield, as it has before. Soaked in blood, and burned to ash....
