Madeline flinched as she slammed the door of the large Georgian style house behind her, feeling another tear rolling down her cheek. She held her cheek which still stung from where Marcus, her adoptive mother's boyfriend had slapped her. She raced down the steps, and held out the keys to her white Mini Cooper S unlocking it. Behind her the door opened and Mark stepped out shouting. "Maddie I'm sorry, come back and we'll talk this out, I just lost-" Maddie whipped her head around yelling back with venom in her voice.
"Go to hell Mark!" She quickly got in her car and speedily pulled out of the driveway before stepping on the gas and racing down the road. It had been the stupidest argument. She was failing AP Trigonometry in high-school, a class she had only taken because Mark has convinced her mother Audrey that she needed it. At first she protested, but math was never her strong-suit, trigonometry was useless, and she just didn't care anymore. Mark had found out about it and threw a fit, threatening everything from disconnecting her phone to taking her car keys. She'd retorted with "Well maybe if you didn't make me take classes I don't even need or want I wouldn't fail them." He'd lost his temper and slapped her across the face. Things had been great for the first years after Audrey Ashford had adopted Maddie, she treated her great and understood the struggles of being a young girl, but Freshman year she'd started dating Mark, a manipulative wealthy bastard, who quickly took all power from Audrey, but she was infatuated with him. She felt her phone buzz in the pocket of her red pea coat and looked at the blue-tooth display on her dashboard, it was her adoptive mother. She declined it.
Madeline took an exit and headed out of town driving on the highway. She drove for another half an hour, declining three more calls from her mother. She eventually pulled into a small town that was thirty-forty minutes out of the large city she lived in. She and Audrey had lived here before Mark had bought a house for them. There was one special place she always remembered, and she liked to go there when she didn't know where else to be. Driving into the edge of town, she pulled into a small gravel area by the small small bridge which lead into the community. Turning off the car Madeline got out grabbing her phone and her pepper spray. She shut the door and locked the car before going into the trees and walking along a little footpath.
Maddie breathed in the night air, sighing as her nerves slightly uncoiled in the dark wood. Most girls her age would be terrified of a forest at night, but here the young girl felt most at peace. She hated Mark, and had lost all respect for Audrey, she didn't have a job and was too young to move out anyway. Maddie realized she had no idea, where she would go when she was done in this forest... She let out a sad sigh as she walked through a clearing then took a left. She came to a rotting wooden and iron bench on the edge of the small river. It was completely surrounded by trees, and rather shallow here. This place was all but forgotten, however she had her mace if anybody tried to give her trouble.
Maddie sat and stared at her feet for a few moments, before she started to cry again.
