"Twenty three, twenty four, twenty five MREs. I imagine there has to be plenty of places to loot. That should hold us till we find more." Luke Vega said to himself as he stacked the packs into his back pack. He was so nervous, never in his life did he think he'd get a chance to leave this bunker. Seven years he had spent held up with his parents and sister. Most of his memories were of counting the days in the cement block deep underground. His parents thought it was a better life for their family though. By thirteen Luke had already had enough of the bunker. Telling his parents how he'd rather live three exciting days out there than live thirty safe and boring years in here. Still his parents wouldn't budge, assuring their children that they just didn't understand yet. Just about a year ago the air filters started to fail and the rations were going buy faster than they had thought. His mother croaked from stress, she was always to uptight and she actually made herself sick with worry. She died because she was to afraid of the outside. Their father was close behind, the twins had found him in the freezer. It seemed like he had cranked the cold all the way up and just sat inside. It was hard, after all they were still young but it wasn't as hard as it should have been. At least for Luke, he found himself back to daily life a month after they were gone. In fact he was having fun. They didn't really say it but they knew if they wanted to live they would have to go out at some point. So they got a bit reckless, eating till they were full instead of lasting it all out. Taking long, hot showers and even baths once Luke managed to make a scrap tub. Wasting electricity on watching old shows and movies they'd never watched.
Yes it quite honestly was paradise for a year. They had so much resources, enough to last four people a life time. Though that was conservatively, not the way they had been living. So after a year they really started to notice. Food and water were low, the power came and went, the air was getting a bit stale. Then came a day like any other in the bunker. Luke was reading up his engineering book for the hundredth time before shutting it with a curious look on his face. "Hey sis..." He called out, breaking the silence that hung in the air. "...You wanna go outside tomorrow?" It was like a light bulb had went off. Of course, they could leave! No one was there to say no and they'd always wanted to. So after a day of preparation and packing they were now getting ready to leave. It was fully possible that they could die instantly when opening the doors. They didn't know much of what happened but they knew that bombs were being dropped all over the world. It was very safe to assume that the world had become a wasteland. That just excited Luke though, it sounded so much more fun than being inside this box for the rest of his life. At least out there he'd have a chance at excitement.
After having counted out the MRE's and packed things like sleeping bags, flint and steel, a dosimeter to detect extreme radiation, Luke went to the bathroom to clean up. He had longer raven black hair that had went to his neck and a growing beard of the same color. With his parents gone over this past year he didn't feel like keeping up with their hair and shaving standards. Today though he thought different. It was a new world after all so why not a new him? With scissors in hand he snipped and cut his hair until it was much shorter. Roughing it up and giving it a messy look. Next was the beard, he had liked the facial hair because it made him look older but it was a new him after all. With straight razor in hand he went to work until his face was left with a slight five'o'clock shadow and all of his face was bare. He liked this look, it was more him. He had started to look more and more like his father as he stopped grooming himself. Not only that but he had started to wear his dad's clothes since he was growing out of his own. Luke was dressed in a black tank top with a red and a bright blue and yellow Hawaiian unbuttoned shirt over top. Also wearing tan cargo shorts on bottom with heavy black boots. He looked like a forty year old fisherman and he hated it. One of the first stops when they found a town was the clothing store. He needed things that fit him, he wasn't the only one either.
Luke walked back out front and pulled on his back pack before meeting eyes with his sister. His twin, they'd always been close, even before the end of the world. They just got along like most twins seemed to. Though their bond was something closer. Not many siblings got to live so close to each other for seven years without seeing another person. It was hard not to see her differently as they went through so many changes. The way she grew and how she refused to wear anything other than her clothes. Just modifying them as she went. It was hard for a boy with raging hormones to deal. After their parents past it got to the point where he just had to tell her if he was sneaking off to rub one out. If he didn't than she would wonder where the one other person in the bunker went and come looking for him. Finding him with his dick in hand was not something he wanted. It was awkward at first but since it was her and no one else around it became a lot easier. They were both very open people anyways, after six months of telling her he wouldn't even sugar coat it. The point was that she was the closest person he knew and he loved her dearly. The world was about to get a lot bigger and scarier, he was just glad she was there with him. "What do you think? I probably should have kept the beard in case it's cold but fuck it. New world new me." He said as he showed off his look to her before looking her up and down. "I was thinking first place we should find is a clothing store. If I remember right, town was just a few miles west of here. We might find it hasn't been looted. I can stop looking like I'm a grandpa and you can wear something other than ten year old cut up shirts struggling to hold your tits." He laughed as he tried to lighten the mood before looking to the walkway to the door. "Let's make a promise, we walk out that door, we never come back. If I see this hole one more time before I die it will be to much. It'll be me and you to the end. We got a long way to go before finding a boat and going in search of our untouched tropical island." He smiled again and then stared at the steps for a moment longer before nodding and heading towards them. After a long walk up to the surface door, Luke brushed off the computer screen controlling the door and started to work at opening it. After a few minutes of typing away it was finally time. Luke glanced once more to his sister as his finger hovered over the enter key. "Last chance, we can live down here for a few more years. Watch old TV over and over till we die." He joked before pressing the key. The sound of old gears creaking back to life could be heard all around them. Rubble and dust filled the air as things started to move again. Luke moved next to his sister and grabbed her hand. If they survived the doors opening then Luke knew they'd be fine. Just for a moment though he was scared, she always made things a lot less worse though. The door parted and bright, bright light hit their eyes. Luke pulled back and shielded his eyes for a moment before looking through the gap. There it was, the sun, and fresh air was hitting their face. They weren't dead and they were free. Luke had a huge smile across his face and looked to his twin before nodding. "Laddies first."
