The sound of feet pounding upon the soft grass was all that Amy concentrated on, as she and her classmates continued their walk up the large hill. The eighteen year old was currently taking part in their school's annual senior camping trip. They had a tradition; a few months before graduation, the senior class would head for the nearby woodlands and camp out for the week. Amy wasn't too fussed about the entire thing herself. Camping wasn't exactly a favorite hobby of hers, but she didn't hate it either. She had managed to derive some pleasure from watching the cheerleaders attempting to set up a tent without breaking a nail though. The process had been both hilarious and pathetic all at the same time.
Needless to say; Amy didn't particularly get along with the popular crowd. That was putting it mildly to say the least, the harsh truth was that they hated her and she hated them. You'd think that being the star of the track team would make her popular with the jocks. Alas; Amy came from an unprivileged background. A single father raising two girls by himself meant that their family didn't have an abundance of money, though they managed to get by. No status or wealth meant that she was looked down upon quite a bit. Plus her appearance and athletic nature didn't help matters.
Amy wasn't ugly, far from it; she was slim, had medium length brown hair, sharp blue eyes and stunning long legs. However standing at five foot ten, she was one of the tallest girls in school and was often the same height or even taller than some of the guys. The girls in particular liked to tease her about being manly, though that wasn't the truth at all. Regardless of her stature and athletic physique, Amy still carried herself like a woman. Even so, the popular crowd made it very clear that they felt she didn't belong in their world, not that she ever wanted to be! They were nothing but a bunch of shallow, vapid, oxygen thieves and she'd rather gouge her own eyes out than spend two minutes in their company.
One person in particular seemed to have a brilliant knack of getting underneath Amy's skin. Tristan, the captain of the football team. Every moment that they spent in each other's company was filled with nothing but snide remarks and bickering. This camping trip, so far, had been no different. Three days in and they had already had two explosive arguments, over the most stupidest of things as well. It seemed that the two just couldn't be around each other without it turning into a frenzied mass of shouting. They shared a couple of classes and had been forced to work with each other on and off over the years, it never ended well.
Today her goal was to stay out of trouble by avoiding him as much as possible. The young woman looked up as the line of students that she was a part of began to slow down. It was late March and spring was just about kicking off. Luckily they had managed to find themselves camping during a relatively dry week, but still it wasn't exactly boiling weather. So currently Amy was wearing some long, brown khakis tucked into a pair of walking boots and her loose waterproof jacket was left undone, so that her plain green t-shirt could be seen underneath.
Amy looked upwards to see exactly why the group was slowing down and a smile began to spread across her face. Up in the trees was a suspension cable. They were going zip-lining! The teenager had always wanted to give it a try, she bet that the rush of adrenaline would feel fantastic! One by one, the rest of the students looked skywards to see it also and murmuring began to spread among them. "No one has to zip-line down if they don't want to!" A teacher began to say from the front. "Anyone wishing to walk back down to camp, head on over to Mrs. Daniels. Everyone else will be heading up in groups of four, so grab a team and lets get going!" The teacher was very enthusiastic, with his excited tone it was clear that he couldn't wait to give it a try himself.
Amy instantly turned to her right to grab hold of her friend, Jessica. Only to find that she had ventured over to the group headed by Mrs. Daniels. Yeah, Jessica didn't do heights. Her other friend, Mark, had already grouped up with his 'bros', causing Amy to frown as he gave a shrug which basically said; 'I can't help it if I'm popular.' She stuck her tongue out at him, before linking arms with her last hope, Tamsin. "I'm not so sure about this" Tamsin said, her eyes looking dubiously up at the wire. "It'll be fine" Amy reassured her, though they still needed two other students to finish off their group. Numbers were running low fast and so the brunette began pushing through the crowd in order to find someone to link up with her and Tamsin. Hopefully there would be someone free, if not she was sure that Mr. Thomas would allow them to go up just fine. In fact; if they went with him that would at least make three, right? Amy ventured towards the teacher, hoping that he'd accept her offer instead of forcing them to group with someone who'd wind up ruining this experience for her.
