Talia's eyes closed and her nostrils flared as she took a deep breath in. This place was a safe haven for her for so many reasons, but mostly because of one thing - the smell. Years previously this had been an old logging warehouse and had been home for the wood that had been cut but not yet processed. Now, it lay mostly bare save for the home she'd made for herself where the sun never shone and even moonlight couldn't tarnish. It smelled faintly of dust and the crisp smell of pine.
Except for today.
Today, there was something new. Her nose twitched as she huffed out a short breath, her eyes opening in the nest she'd made for herself of old blankets that had been stolen from a human and some tarp that had been left here. Her fur was unkempt but she was by no means a lazy wolf, her eyes opening as her ears swiveled slowly on her head.
In the near distance she could hear the sound of voices that were unfamiliar, the skin pulling back to expose her jagged teeth. A noise rose from her that was pure instinct - a growl that rolled from her throat slow as the she-wolf moved now from the safe haven of her home and towards the intruders. Humans, of course, had come before and she knew that they were frightened of her kind. These were smaller than most men but there was no mistaking them.
Their fear was a sharper scent as they caught sight of her and she knew that she was a creature that was frightening to see in this form. Her body was somewhere between human and animal, her head definitely canine but her paws more human. Her claws dug into the concrete floor and she heard the screech of them against the smooth surface, another growl coming louder. Instinct drove her to leap, the growl turning into a full-fledged snarl as she sprung on her prey.
The boy moved at the last second but she was still in between him and the exit now, her fur standing on end as the others ran for their lives. Without the threat of being outnumbered, her human mind was able to make sense of the scene, her eyes moving over the boy's frame before she permitted her body to shift. It was swift, her wolf form shaking out with the loud pops and groans of her bones shifting back, fur receding to reveal pale and bare flesh. Her hair was wild around her head, blue eyes locked onto the boy as her nostrils flared.
