Julia McGowan sighed to her self as she woke up that sunny morning. Today was it. The night of the Masquerade Ball. The teachers claimed it promoted house unity. So what. People would step out of their comfort zones for tonight, tomorrow they would step back in. In her her eyes, the night achieved nothing. Sure you would meet a few new people tonight, but what about tomorrow, no one was going to talk to their new found "friends" again once they found out who they really were.

She pulled her self out of bed. There were no classes on today in honor of the special occasion. She walked to her trunk at the front of her bed and pulled out her dress and mask. She laid them on her bed and smiled. She did like them. She had a deep purple dress. It was a silky to the touch and shined in the light. The fabric was gathers at the sides, making the skirt over lap. She smiled and pulled out some casual clothes, a pair of jeans, a red shirt on top, with a black cardigan over the top.

She then smiled and walked out of the girls dormitory and through the common room. It seemed her own friends had gone down to breakfast before her. She left the raven claw common room through the secret entrance and headed through the halls of the school into the great hall. Walking down the raven claws table she sat down next to her freind Alicia.

She smiled and said "Hey Jules, what took you so long"

Julia looked at her and said "I wanted a bit of a sleep in, is it a crime"

Alicia smiled and said "No, ofcourse not, you just looked a bit funny with your mouth hanging open while you slept" she said with a chuckle.

Leila sighed and said "Haha, pass the marmalade"

Alexander Heilblum, a boy the same age as "Jules" was actually just the last person he'd want to be paired with. It was a thing of honor, of pride, of victory and ambition. "Heilblum should switch into Slytherin", he often heard from his nemesis Julia, but he had a set of well placed limits and principles which he nearly never crossed, and that's what marked the difference, or so he thought. Alex knew where their rivalry started, way back in the first year, when one would indirectly hate the other for getting right answers, learning things faster, and doing better papers. To a Ravenclaw, learning was a very important part of life, and doing it well was just another characteristics of them. Few students ever flunked while being in Ravenclaw, it just wasn't that way, and Alex and Julia were just another couple fighting out the first place of their generation. Alex himself found himself beating her most of the time in Transfiguration and Defense, but Julia seemed to do slightly better, if not the same in everything else. Because of this, most people turned to Julia for help, even though they had the same grade, he didn't care though, he and his group of friends helped each other out most of the time.

Okay so there was one thing about Jules that Alex tried to forget about her, he had secretly always kind of liked her, but being the rational and at times "bully" he was, he preferred to just focus on studying. Alex himself had admitted this to himself only twice, but too preferred to ignore this fact. He would not ignore though, and neither would any guy he had met yet, that Julia had her fair attributes that made her a very attractive girl, it was just that once Alex got close enough to her, her tone of voice and words would set off an intermediate reaction in Alex. Alex could be seen as mean, or a jerk by his proud way of being. He always felt better than others, but maybe it was because it was lack of proper self respect and esteem.

He was sitting next to Julia's group of friends, with his own. He had dared to invade this side of the large elongated archaic table because Julia, the "Big Boss" wasn't around, the girls didn't mind, they had no rivalry with Alex. Now, just out of bad luck, Alex had taken the same marmalade Leia had pointed out for. He wouldn't do anything to pick on Leia, they kind of get well enough together, but Julia, being the paranoid 'bitch' she was, would take this as an instant offense. Alex saw Mark smile and let a chuckle as he had just picked up the entire scene.

Julia was buttering her toast when Leila asked for the marmalade. She was about to happily oblige until she saw the said marmalade in the hands of Alex. She frowned and said "I'm sorry Leila but I carn't get it for you, its in the hands of this del-"

"Okay okay I'll just use the Jam!" Leila cut in quickly. She really didn't want to listen to those to going at it at breakfast.

Julia shot Alex a glare before she returned to eating her own food.

Julia and Alex's rivalry extended back to the very first day of school. She couldn't remember exactly how it started but she did remember him saying something about her big her nose and the correct tern to call her was a hag not a witch. Of course Julia had been offended, she thought she had a great looking nose, and so did all the rest of her friends. From that day on the two were constantly trying to out do each other. It didn't matter if it was work or a game of chess, not matter the contest, tey both wanted to beat each other.

Julia bit into her toast and took a sip of pumpkin juice, pointedly ignoring Alex.

Mark pointed indirectly at Julia with a face gesture, hoping Alex could catch, of course as always, Alex did. He set the marmalade down and looked back behind being the group of girls completed. He rolled his eyes and was about to speak but one of the other guys punched him before he said anything immature and out of the line. Their guys were already sick of their child games (most of the time), and tried to evade any source of stupid unnecessary contact. Little did he know that both of the groups had planned something for them tonight, the fighting had seemed to go on long enough, peace must be made once and for all, and tonight was the best night to pull of their little scheme. Alex frowned and drank milk instead, loving the white calcium rich liquid till his death, he turned his back to Julia's direction and finally began a non-related conversation asking, "Who won the quidditch game last night? I was studying in the common room for Potions."

Potions was his weakest subject, so he kept studying for it no matter if there was an exam or not. Julia had been there too and they had finished doing a silly game of who stayed up latest studying. It got to the point where he let Julia win, explaining, probably, why she had slept in a little later today. "Did Hufflepuff make the unexpected come back I was hoping for?" Asked Alex after putting down the toast, Mark replied, "You and your surprises... they barely beat Slytherin." Alex tried to omit a mean comment he had just come up with, bu he added, "Guess that means we'll have to play tough against the Hag's-" He was interrupted by another punch, "Hufflepuff". He nodded and just drank his milk, not wanting to make a scene this morning.

Julia gave Alex a glare when she heard him say "Hag". She said nothing in reply and continued eating. Once she was finished eating she looked to her friends. It seemed they were finishing up as well. Alica said "What should we do today guys, we have the day off today.

Leila smiled and suggested "Maybe we could lounge about the lake before we have to get ready for the ball, what do you think Jules".

Julia smiled a little and said "Sure thats sounds alright"

Ignoring Alex she smiled at mark and said asked "Are you coming mark?" she asked him.

"Oh come on McGowan, don't start that now!" He said standing up in front of her. Mark rolled his eyes towards everyone else, some girls were nodding disapprovingly and the guys were frowning. Mark coughed once to interrupt their leer of hatred, but nothing seemed to break it, "You know the guys wouldn't leave me, and the girls wouldn't leave you. So don't start problems you drama-dosed witch!" His green eyes stared into hers, waiting for her to blink before he did. They even made contest out of these ridiculous type of events, he couldn't let her win, no matter what. Then all of a sudden, he spoke to her, waiting for her to blink, "But if you'd like, me and the girls can go to the lake, while you stay here an do nothing." His smirk was proud and selfish as always, he didn't know how he still had friends at times.

Juilia glared at him. She stood up, leaning on the table with her hands and bending over. "Listen Heilbum, go get eaten by a dragon cos you'd be doing the rest of the world a favor! You selfish git!" she said angrilly. She would have gone on but then Professor McGonagle walked past and began lecture them on how they looked as two prefects of the school and should be setting an example for the other students.

He growled lowly subconsciously and took a step back as Professor McGonagle appeared out of nowhere, it was so cool how she could do that. Professor knew of their rivalry quite well, and they had been made prefect to get along better, but it only made things tighter between the two. He knew that if he took advantage of the situation, the professor wouldn't bite the bait, instead he went for the best thing he could do. "See you girls at the lake..." He nodded at the guys behind him, who all got up like puppets following him. He walked rapidly away from the Professor before he could get scolded once more, he really hated that. Most of the guys waved good-bye to the girls as they all thought the same thing 'Who was the bigger prick?'. Alex walked finally into the great hall where he said, "Hag's getting worse everyday. She needs a good you-know what..." The guys didn't laugh this time instead they stayed quiet as one of them said, "This bad vibe is making us sick, mate. You two should quit the crap and just be friends!" Alex acted as if he did not hear that, because he knew deep down that it was true.

Julia watched as he left. she and the girls did the same. She walked with them down to the lake and sat with them. The girls gave her a lecture and she said nothing in reply. He'd started it!

A few hours would pass and the girls decided it was time to head back and get ready for the ball. In their dormitory they helped each other get into their dresses, did each others hair and make up before finally putting on their masks. Julia dress was purple and her mask the same color. Her brown hair had been curled and left to cascade down her back.

He had acted the entire time as if she had not been there at all, and instead had fun with his friends (including the girls). He supposed she would do the same, and practically did. They had a fun time when all of a sudden the girls thought about going to get ready, the guys agreed, and said they would go later, as girls needed at least twice as much time as guys. When the time came the boys headed up to the common room s into their own dorms.

Alex got ready just as all the boys did. Shaved off their nuisances, put on wild colognes made by witches of Hogsmeade, the aromas were that of beloved roses with a sting of manly acids, just right to get any girl. They got ready with their suits. They had to wear dress-robes so it was tradition. Alex's were a dark green color, with golden touches, such as his buttons that had all sorts of patterns in them that swirled and moved once they were buttoned. His mask was very special too. It covered all of his face, with a golden background. Over it were swirling spirals that moved around his face and created the wildest shapes you could imagine. He called it the "Phoenix Gaze". The guys got ready in no time, each as good looking as the last but they all seemed hurried. They came to agree to find themselves outside the Ball Room, since they knew what each other wore, and then go in. Alex was the last to leave as he made his way to the event.

By the time the boys had arrived, the girls were already inside having a good time. They had found dancing partners already, but Julia was standing on the side, drinking some of he punch. She looked around the room, a smile on her face. Perhaps the night could turn out alright after all.

While Julia happily observed the scene, Leila would move over to mark and whisper in his ear, pointing out which girl Julia was. Their plan was coming into effect.

Julia smiled to her self and took a sip of her drink again smiling to her self, and swaying a little to the music.

They met up, and went in as planned, not knowing that the plan was much more then just meeting. Soon enough they had deserted him slyly, and he suddenly turned aroudn to see that none of the guys were around to have fun with. He didn't want to disturb them since some were with some girls which he recognized, and others with total strangers. He went along with the fun of the night and decided to talk with some random girl, asking her out to dance. He caught the glimpse of a tall girl, with astonishing hair, and a lovely red dress and matchign mask. He smiled and decided to go up to her,

"Excuse me ma'am, but may I take thee out to a festive dance?" The girl looked at his eyes trying to find some type of recognition, Alex himself was puzzled as to who it was. She smiled and nodded, of course as previously thought, Alex couldn't stick to plans too well, so it was time for one of the boys to intervene. Before he even got to know the girl better, as they went out ot the dance floor, one fo the guys passed running next to him and grabbed him by the collar, "Come on!" Alex was puleld over towards the punch, where he had not yet been, "Wait here..." Said, and then ran off once more. He frowned and wondered what the hell was that.

Julia sighed to her self as she stood on the sides, drinking her punch. She looked around and she did want to dance, however lack of a partner prevented her from doing so. She looked up at the ceiling of the great hall. It looked magnificent as always. She smiled and looked back around.

This was when one of the boy approached her. "Would you like to dance?" he asked her. She was about to extend her hand and say "yes" when Eliza ran past her and dragged her away saying, "Can you check my hair?"

She was dragged around the hall by the punch bowl and Julia look through her hair and said "your hair fine, I don't know what your problem is" she said with a sigh.

Elise smiled brightly and said "Thanks, see you later" before running off.
