Teresa grew up about 15 miles outside of Chicago and had still never been there. Her mother was over protective and sheltered her. Because of this, Teresa didn't have any friends, except the neighbor boy, who she wouldn't really call a friend. They grew up making mud pies together and chasing lightning bugs. They hung out because of convenience, not because they liked each other or even got along really. He had pot too. She enjoyed smoking with him sometimes.
Tomorrow was her 16th birthday and she was planning a huge surprise for her mom. Her mom didn't know it yet, but she would find out in the morning.
Teresa wasn't a genius, but she was rather smart, that's saying a lot because she's been taught by her sub-par mother her whole life. Her mother didn't make it past the 8th grade.
She knew her mom had left her Dad she she was very young. Teresa had never met the man and when she would ask her mom about him, she would go berserk. Telling Teresa she 'didn't want to talk about it.' 'It was in the past.' And Teresa's personal favorite, 'just pretend you don't have a father.'
They lived in a small 2 bedroom house at the end of a gravel road. Teresa was alone a lot. Her mother worked 3 jobs to support them. Teresa spent a lot of time on the internet these days.
Teresa was a very inquisitive person. It was built into her being, so it was only natural that when she was old enough she would want to search for her Dad. It all happened by chance actually, she needed her birth certificate to try out for the county soccer team (she didn't make the team) and her mother actually let her see it. Teresa copied all of the pertinent information about her Dad and hid the note inside a book in her room.
After months of research, she finally found him. Tonight she was doing to drive the 150 miles to Galena and meet him. She set up a ride with the local mechanic's son. It cost her $60, which she has slowly been stealing from her mom.
'Tonight's the night!', she thought. Filled to the brim with excitement.
