"MEDIC!!"
The cry for an EMT had gone up after the sickening crack of a bone breaking had been heard over the rugby pitch. All of the spectators and players had cringed at the noise and despite her better judgement, Sarah had gotten up from her blanket to go run over and offer help; it had been her friend who had been the injured one and she had a basic understanding of first aid (granted, it was animal first aid because her mother was a veterinarian, but still, it was kind of useful sometimes). Surely she could be of some sort of help while they waited for the ambulance...
Oh.
That's a very broken leg.
Green eyes went wide and Sarah's stomach flipped and knotted as she looked at the bottom half of her best friend's leg which was jutting out at a nauseatingly unnatural angle. Of course here she was, ready to vomit, and nothing had happened to her...meanwhile Bridget was just laying there, stone-faced and staring at a cloud while the bottom portion of her leg dangled at a 90 degree angle.
"You're okay..." The beta murmured as she knelt down next to her friend, not sure if she was talking to herself or to Bridget as she took the other girl's hand. Immediately her slender fingers were seized in an iron grip and she winced. Bridget must be in so much pain... But of course, typical Alpha that her friend was, absolutely would not cry out or shed tears in this public space...she'd just quietly crush every single bone in Sarah's hand. There was a brief moment of emotion when the wail of a siren sounded from far away, a flash of fear in the Alpha's eyes. "Hey, I'll stay with you," the beta soothed, knowing that her friend had a fear of doctors.
Sarah was losing feeling in her fingers (which may or may not be broken) by the time the ambulance pulled onto the field. Bridget didn't release her though and actually snarled at a medic who tried to get them apart so that he could have an easier time getting the stubborn Alpha onto the gurney. After a little bit of awkward moving about, the wounded rugby player was settled and Sarah was moving with her, climbing up into the back of the ambulance and setting off with her to go to the hospital.
As soon as they left, the rumor mill started up (as usual on an all girl's team). Most of the younger players thought something was up with Bridget and Sarah, something that went past best friends. Even a few of the older players got in on the action - stirring the pot with a story of Bridget kissing Sarah (though for some reason they always left out the part where Bridget had been black out drunk and an emotional mess from her fiancee leaving her). By the time the whistle had been blown for play to begin again, a betting pool had already started on when the two wolves would finally get together and make it public.
