Everyday seemed to start or end the same way it had for the past sixteen years of her life. Monika grew up in New York City with her single guardian, her older brother. Most people thought life was simple, but Monika's early life had been so hectic that she had to do certain things to calm herself down on a daily basis. It was hard enough growing up with her brother; his head always deep in work and being a busy man. Monika had to learn to be on the go constantly in the throng of new york city.
The good thing was, she went to a private school. Her brother had been sure to send her to one of the best, knowing full well she was a brilliant mind and held herself back. Oh how she never heard the end of the conversations when she flunked a class. It was simply for the fact Monika was bored, but she knew she had to apply herself anymore.
"If I just keep breathing..." Her eyes closed with every sigh. Reminding herself to exhale deeply as she pushed through the throng of people to the subways. Her life was the same everyday; Wake up, brush her teeth, make her bed, clean, make herself breakfast, eat, get dressed, get her backpack, go to school, do her homework after school, walk home, eat, sleep, rinse repeat. She had supposed she could have blamed her parents for making her this way, and often her brother and her had dabbled on the conversation though she never ventured too far into it. She liked order, she liked things a certain way, and she had a compulsion to keep things the same...Or so she thought she wanted such a thing.
Monika chewed on her pencil as she finished up her homework. Her teachers were nice enough to stay later with her, allowing her to do her schoolwork at school without being distracted by her brother. That and Monika felt safer when she got home and he was there. She dreaded being alone in the apartment when he wasn't there, not wishing to have another ordeal with the people she used to call mom and dad.
"Are you done Monika?" She looked up, her green eyes looking at the old woman who looked like a Sunday School teacher.
"Yes Mrs. Smithson." Monika replied with a sigh. She had finished her homework a few minutes ago, earlier than usual, but she had always waited for the clock to strike a certain time. She sighed, standing up as she started to put her stuff away.
"Okay dear, be safe on the subway." Mrs. Smith moved back to her desk, her hair pulled up in a bun as Monika nodded. Monika fixed her grey pencil skirt as she stood up, it clinging to her hips and showing off her curves. She stretched, before slipping her pink princess backpack on, it hung on against her hip. Monika's blouse was a sky blue color, and though loose, showed her large bust underneath as it clung to her bra. Monika smiled, nodding to the teacher.
She had waved, only to leave the high school in a hurry as she pulled her long red hair out of the straps of her backpack. Monika flipped open her phone, turning it on and sending her brother a text that she was on the way to Grand Central Station. It only took a few seconds to get his reply, that he would meet her at home.
Monika easily flipped her card to go through the station, walking towards the train that would take her home. Here she was, the light still out for now, as people crowded by the tracks waiting for the train. She looked at her phone, long black lashes covering her cheeks as she yawned nervously while counting down the time. Then, as the clock hit 5pm, she looked up hearing the train coming down the tracks. Monika released a sigh, pushing her card, keys, and phone in the pocket of her skirt. She waited, letting a few couple of people slip on before she too slipped onto the train. Monika moved to the back, all the way where most people cluttered to for the first half of the train. There she saw the cart as she normally did, though everyday it seemed to change; people sitting down, some standing up, no one by the last door. Monika sighed, moving through the crowd, bumping into people without so much as a sorry as she made her way towards the pole in the back by the doors. She grabbed onto it, preferring to stand her in this spot and let everyone else sit down. It also made it easier for her to be able to get out faster. She closed her eyes, waiting patiently for the train to fill up as she tried to relax. Only one hour on the train until she could get off and go home.
