The woman stood on top of the hill, scowling at the sky. It was dark and ominous wall of clouds encroaching on the clear blue, and snows seemed to have crept farther down the mountain that loomed over them all. The hill was normally grassy, but now the brown grass crunched underfoot, not having grown for at least two warm seasons. Of course they had seen cold seasons before, but not like this. The cold seemed to last longer and longer each cycle, and this past warm season hadn't been very warm at all, but chilly with a few hot days here and there. Now much of the grass and vegetation was dying and they had been unable to keep the livestock they once had, and food seemed to be becoming more and more scarce.
With a final glare at the sky in the distance, she sniffed and started back down the hill. The snows and ice would be upon them soon, and they all had to do their part or they would starve in the long freeze ahead. She had been tracking a mammoth for two days and continued after it long after her brethren had given up and turned back in search of easier game. Packed in snow, this mammoth could easily feed her village at least half the winter if not longer. For now she used her spear as a walking stick, keeping her tattooed face turned toward the ground as she followed tracks. This lone figure walked with her hood down, dressed in skins and furs with pelts tied around her feet with sinew, unaware of what was coming.
