Kassy Kent stood in her bedroom looking in the mirror at her reflection in the new striped dress she'd purchased. The occasion was the return of her much older brother whom she hadn't seen in almost three years. She'd been only 13 when her brother had gotten the elite internship after finishing his degree in engineering. It was some big medical corporation and after he'd moved away his career had kept him so busy that he hadn't made it home for even a single holiday in almost three years and Kassy and their parents missed him terribly.
Two weeks ago he'd phoned though, telling them that he was taking a sabbatical from work and returning home for a visit. Kassy had been ecstatic, she absolutely idolized her brilliant, handsome older sibling and went right out and bought a new outfit to celebrate. She wanted to look as grown up as she could for him, as the last time he'd visited he'd still called her 'Kiddo' and that drove her absolutely crazy. All she wanted was for him to realize that she'd grown up, but she was only thirteen then, and now she was sixteen and felt like she was twenty. Unfortunately her body didn't agree, she was still nearly flat chested and terribly embarrassed by the fact she was a late bloomer and her reflection only served to reinforce that.
"Kassandra??? Kassy, Honey what are you doing up there? Your brother is going to be here any minute!" Her mother called up from downstairs.
"Nothing... I'll be right down!" Kassy called back, frustration burning in her eyes.
Her father didn't allow her to wear makeup yet and she wished she could wear lipstick but settled for some lip gloss and finished by fixing her hair so that it draped over her shoulder. It would have to do, she thought to herself as she heard the cab pull up out front. Kassy ran to the window and looked down seeing him exit the cab, she felt butterflies flutter in her stomach. She turned and booked down stairs, almost tripping and falling down them.
"KASSY, WHAT THE HELL? HOW MANY TIMES DO I HAVE TO TELL YOU NOT TO RUN DOWN THE STAIRS?! For God's sake you are going to break your neck!" Her father scolded, and his tone only drove home the point that her whole family still regarded her as a child.
"OK, ok....geez...." Kassy grumbled, as she finished sprinting toward the front door. "He's here!" Kassy exclaimed and ripped open the front door, eye wide with excitement.
