"Miss KILLENBUCK.....MISS Killenbuck... Did you hear my question? Are you sleeping in my classroom again?" Professor Hilbert yelled from the podium as he stood in front of an equation filled blackboard.
Kassandra Killenbuck head popped up from her desk with a gasp, a small string of drool on her lipstick covered plump lips. She was confused for a second, still reeling from the nightmare she'd just had. In the bad dream she'd was her alter ego, Ultragirl and was captured in a faceless super villain's lair, chained to the wall in his hidden fortress. He was lording her greatest weakness over her, a mineral called Ultraminium from her home dimension. The generic villain had been cackling with glee as his lasers cut her super-suit off her virgin body, threatening her the whole time. He wanted information of some kind, the only problem was that she didn't know the answer. He didn't believe her and wanted answers or else he was going to rape the super heroine with his fiendish machine.
It was then that the nightmare faded and reality snapped her back into the real world and Kassy figured out that the endless questioning in her dream was actually her first period college professor, Dr. Hilbert wanting to know if Kassy had dozed off in his class again. "Sorry Dr. Hilbert, I was up late studying for the mid term...It won't happen again." She pleaded, wiping the sleep from her eyes.
"Oooh good you were studying, So you know the missing variable of the equation behind me then?" Professor Hilbert asked indignantly.
Kassy stared up at the long strand of esoteric gibberish scratch in chalk and shook her head no. "Sorry that one stumped me last night, that's why I didn't get any sleep." The class erupted into a chuckle as Kassy lied, and hated doing so, she had been raised with the most strict of morals by her adopted parents, but that was the problem with secret identities, no matter how good of a person you were, you always had to lie to someone.
You see, the truth was that it was no dream, Kassy Killenbuck as actually Ultragirl in real life. The younger sister of Captain Ultra, the world's greatest Hero and refugee from a parallel dimension which had been destroyed by a powerful villains war against the heroes of their world. He and his infant sister were the only two spared from their former home's reality upon its destruction. Now stranded here in this world they found themselves empowered and capable of feats other mortals could only dream of.
Captain Ultra had been an adult when he had arrived, and quickly adapted, using his powers to fight crime, however Kassy was far too young. It took years before he allowed her to start using her own powers for the same, and he intrusted his little sister to an adopted family to be raised. The Killenbucks were good salt of the earth people and raised her as their own. When she turned thirteen he finally allowed her to create her own Superhero persona and become a member of the Teen Brigade and Ultragirl was truly born.
Now eighteen her stint in the Teen Brigade is coming to a close, she must decide if fighting the forces of evil on her own as an independent is the path she should take, or retire from the superhero game all together. This latest nightmare only emphasized the conundrum further. Yes she loved being 'America's Super Sweetheart' but every new villain she faced was only becoming more dangerous. How long before one of them finally got the better of her and did something to her that she couldn't come back from? Was it really worth her life?
The bell rung and she gathered her books and stuffed them in her bag, making her way out onto the campus' fairway. From behind her she heard the tiptoe of tennis shoes creeping up behind her. Her super hearing spoiled the surprise though, she knew full well who it was as his strong hand grasp her buttocks and squeeze yelling, "BOO!"
"HA got ya! What's up beautiful, caught sleeping in class again huh?" The deep voice of the handsome jock crooned as he walked up and slung his arm around her shoulders. Christopher Dean was a senior and head quarterback of the Euphoria City's star college football team, The Timberwolves. He'd been pining after Kassy since the first day, and truth be told she crushed on him just as hard, but dating wasn't an option when you were a super heroine.
"Sorry big guy, hands to yourself." Kassy said with a giggle, tossing his arm off her shoulder.
"Come on babe, when you gonna lay off the books and spend some time with me? There a lot better reasons to sleep through Hilbert's class then burying your nose in a book, you know?" Chris laughed, and throwing on a charismatic grin.
"Real funny...but I plan on getting the education my parents paid for, not just partying while I'm here." Kassy said, sounding more stuck up than she'd intended. They had been walking passed a group of elder classmen cheerleaders when she'd replied and the girls gave a mean spirited chuckle mocking her prudish response.
"Come on Chris, leave the little nun alone and come play with a girl who knows what a man needs!" The older girl called out mockingly, drawing Chris' attention.
"Hey maybe we can hang out this weekend or something...If I'm not too busy" Kassy said, trying to save face, but she knew it was a lie, she was simply too busy with her other life. Apparently so did he, having been fed the line before.
"Sure.... yeah right, just like last weekend huh?" Chris said and shook his head before jogging off to go flirt with the cheer squad.
Kassy cursed herself and looked down at her Fitbit to check the time before her next class. It was just then that the wristband blinked and beeped, letting her know that her day was going to get a lot worse before it got better. It was a signal from the Teen Brigade, meaning there was another emergency. "Shoot!" she yelled.
Kassy dodged around a corner and hit the button on her wristband, instantly a holographic image of her former team leader popped up, BlackHawk.
"Hey Kass sorry to bother you, but I got an issue we need your help with. Machineiac is at it again! He's set loose a giant robot in the center of the city and we need your help taking it down!" The masked and devastatingly handsome young man insisted. BlackHawk had been The Crimson Shadow’s former sidekick before leaving to lead the Teen Brigade. As you might guess being trained by the world’s greatest detective, made him quite adept for the job. Crimson Shadow was one of the founding member’s of Sentinels of Justice along with Kassy’s older brother, Captain Ultra and the warrior goddess Suprema.
"OK, I'll get there as fast as I can." Kassy exclaimed, but her heart wasn't in it. She spun so fast that her form disappeared and when she stopped her civilian clothes were gone, replaced by her famous Ultragirl outfit. Chrome unitard with blue piping, and a golden 'U' chest emblem, Red cape and matching boots and gloves, her domino mask covering her eyes she was now the 'Princess of Power, Ultragirl'.
Kassy leapt into the sky as subsonic speed, jetting off to deal with another villainous contraption, Hopefully she could deal with this and get back before she missed too many classes. Unfortunately for her, Mister Machine wasn't the real problem for her today. There was someone else with far more sinister intentions waiting for her and she had no idea just how bad things were going to get.
Ultragirl was coming in hot, cruising at just under the speed of sound so as to not create a sonic boom in the metropolitan cityscape. She could see the cloud of floating debris a few blocks off and knew her target was somewhere inside. Her advanced vision zoomed in and scanned the area for Machineiac’s oversized remote control robot and found they metal behemoth smashing into a 10 story office building. It was reeling back from a blow delivered by one of her former teammates, the Teen Brigade was already here and taking care of business, and the thought of seeing them again brought a smile to her beautiful face.
Ultragirl closed the distance, swooping in behind the giant metal drone and pushing it back off the building. With her immense strength she shoved and the tons of robot flew through the air toward a park where it cause less damage.
“Nice Throw!” Blackhawk called out from the ground, giving his former teammate and on again, off again love interest the thumbs up. She waved and gave a smile before starting to rescue people from the damaged building.
Meanwhile the rest of Teen Brigade was giving chase, Ultragirl watched as, Turbo Teen, Rampart, Wiccania, and Hansel & Grettel rushed off to continue the fight. She missed them terribly and hoped they’d get a chance to catch up after Machineiac was defeated.
Using her super speed she was able to clear any victims from the rubble, thankfully no one was too seriously injured. With the people safe, she could return her focus to helping with the battle. Wiccinia was floating just behind the robot’s head, using her dark magic to create a swirling vortex of energy, slowly chipping away at it’s armor. Rampart was using his brute strength at ground level, bear hugging the robot’s leg and trying to tumble the beast. Hansel & Grettel were using their transformation powers to become a band which was constricting the robot’s arms and a lever to tighten the band. And Blackhawk was using his gadgetry to try and jam the remote control signal to the robot. They were all operating as a well oiled machine, even without Ultragirl.
Ultragirl came in for her patented flying uppercut, although the team looked like they had it covered without her, she figured one good one for old times sake couldn’t hurt. She swooped down near it’s waist and was getting ready to deliver the big punch when the machine suddenly just stopped. Its form went limp, head dropped to a lull and it simply tumbled over in a heap. Ultra girl pulled off, floating in the sky she stared down at the downed opponent. “I didn’t even hit him…” She said, mildly disappointed.
“Me either, I was attempting to jam his signal, but my hacking program didn’t make it into his system yet.” Blackhawk called out.
“Don’t look at me, my magic is more of a minor inconvenience to Machineiac’s tech than an actual assault.” Wiccinia said, dropping out of the sky and landing next to her teammates.
It was Rampart who finally decided to check and see if the robot was actually disabled or just playing opossum. His bulky muscular form strode up onto it’s torso and made his way to its head. “Hellooo? Mcfly? Anybody in there?” He asked, taking a knuckle and knocking on the machine’s darkened head in an homage to the classic Back to the Future movie franchise. His antics were always a good stress relief after a tough battle and while most the team laughed, Ultragirl felt a pang of sadness, knowing she wouldn’t hear them anymore now that she wasn’t an official team member.
“Maybe the old fat bastard finally had a stroke or something?” Hansel said as he transformed his shape back into the blue skinned alien form he and his sister usually held.
“Rampart, start disassembling that thing, I want everybody else searching for survivors!” Blackhawk announced. “...And thanks for the help Ultragir….Is it still ‘Ultragirl’ even though you’re now an adult? Did you change it to Ultra Woman, or Ultra Lass?” Blackhawk asked with a smile to his former girlfriend trying to dispel some of the awkward tension.
“No… It’s still Ultragirl, atleast for now, and thanks, even though I didn’t help that much, you guys wanna go and get a pizza after your done here, maybe catch up?” She asked.
“Sorry wish we could but we’ve got a press conference and we’re looking at new recruits to fill your...the open position on the team...Maybe next time.” Hawk said, the emotions he was feeling, showing through his mask.
Ultragirl nodded in understanding and flew off solemnly back toward her apartment. Landing on the roof and spinning quickly her costume was gone and now she was wearing her alter ego’s civilian clothes. She was just Kassandra Killenbuck once again. She didn’t even make it down the stairs before tears started to flow and she began to sob.
