Monsters have always lingered on the edge of humanity. Wether in stories and myths, horror movies or the urban legends and rumours told around campfires. There have been times, hundreds of years ago when the whole of humanity accepted the presence of monsters, when leviathans and dragons and other unspeakable beings roamed this earth and where commonplace. But then came the time of humanity, with torch and spear to push back the beasts with steel and gunpowder and a myriad of inventions. The time of the monsters has long since passed, buried under cities of concrete and glass and as they days became years, the years became decade and the decades became centuries, they were slowly forgotten. The reign of monsters has fallen from our world into the books of myth and legend. But as with all things, the cycle soon comes around.

It began with a stirring in the corners of the world, in the darkest caves and the deepest oceans. People began to disappear. Archaeologists in Egypt, gone without a trace along with their newfound ruins. Mountain climbers in Europe, gone in a flash of fire after discovering an ancient cave. Deep sea explorers, never heard from again after frantic last messages. It was the beginning of an awakening and strange occurrences in the world of mankind, a world of fact and science. Soon though, the rumours and reports began to spread, to nearly every country and city in the world. People attacked by strange animals, more people never seen again. And that was just the beginning.

One particular monster of legend dwelled underneath a city of humans, roughly the size of a city block. But this was an old creature, one that remembered a time when it was much larger and stronger, where it roamed the world as it pleased with enough power to level the city it now hid under. Now however, the great leviathan leeched off of the humans like a parasite after centuries of hibernation. It could sense the change that was coming and had been preparing, snatching human after human to feed it's hunger and spread it's offspring. It had taken a long time but it had finally figured out that humans, of all the mammals on this planet, were the best incubators for it's eggs. And so it was that, with the sound of music in the city and alcohol flowing the creature lay in wait, it's feelers and tendrils spread out in the various dark corners and alleyways around it, waiting for it's prey.

It was a rather late hour of the night when the streets had begun to clear from its routine nightlife, leaving mostly vacant streets that only had the occasional car passing by or the bum sleeping in the corner. Cally had just come from a rather hectic night at the club with her girlfriends. Midterms were mostly over, with only one or two test remaining to be done before the college semester was over. While it might have been wise to stay in her dorm to study hard, the stress of the first few test was enough to have her overlook her better judgement and hit the clubs after much insisting from her friends. She had promised her boyfriend that she would too busy with studying that she had to sneak this occasion from under his nose. It was perhaps for the best that he didn't know what she was doing, as she was dressed to party and get some drinks. If she just happened to find a hook-up along the way, then it was going to be just another secret that she would have to keep from him. He wouldn't what she was up to all the time. She was dressed rather scandalously, as most girls tend to dress if they wanted attention. Her red little dress almost hugged every curve she owned that featured a short little skirt cut short up her thighs and accentuating that cute butt she had, it was further cut low on top to show as much cleavage from her perky breasts as possible without getting arrested. Her outfit hung loosely from her shoulders that and it was perhaps by some miracle that it didn't just slip off of her from the slightest movement. She wore black thigh-high boots with platform heels that gave her a boost in height. If she wasn't heading to the club, the blonde co-ed might have been mistaken for a streetwalker.

Cally wasn't someone who concerned herself with rumours of monsters or missing persons cases. Her concerns were more personal, typically dealing with herself. She was worried whether or not she would be passing this semester but also whether or not she could maintain her popularity around the campus. Current events had little weight with her, things were about to change, however. Her girlfriends had offered to walk with her back to her dorm but Cally was feeling especially brave tonight. Especially when her friend Laura was starting to feel queasy from all of the shots that were gifted to her by admirers, she didn't want to risk having her sexy little red dress ruined just because Laura couldn't hold it in. Unfortunately, she left her phone with one of friends and couldn't quite order a cab out tonight. She didn't quite score a man she was happy to go home with either. Everything combined, left her a rather scandalously dressed young woman in the middle of the downtown core. It wasn't quite the ideal situation, but Cally had braved through worse.

She meandered the streets of downtown, half-lost and half-drunk, until she had some semblance of where she was going. The alleyway was perhaps one of the worst places to be at night but she was more interested in getting home on time than to be scared of what could be there. As far as she was concerned, most of the bums were either asleep and more gang members had gone to bed by this ungodly hour of the night. She slung her black little purse on her shoulder and started sauntering down the darkened alley with a slight stumble on her tall heels, using the chainlink fence behind her as a guide to get on the other side of the alleyway. Just a small walk, and she should find herself on mainstreet to catch a bus in no-time...

The leviathan that lay in wait had changed much over the years, evolving as human society dominated the world. It could remember many centuries ago, back when humans lived in villages of wood and would wield weapons of stone and weak metals, when fire was still considered powerful. Back then it had been a mighty beast, dwelling in the oceans and capable of bringing down an entire fleet of human ships. But then it began it's hibernation at the deepest point of the ocean, hidden from the humans that could never reach it, but when it awoke, smaller and weakened it found an ocean that was unfamiliar. Corrupted by human pollution, the leviathan arose to a world that was so drastically different to the one it had left. No longer could the beast easily claim human vessels, nor could it emerge from the water to destroy fishing villages and drag it's victims into the water, for now it was too weak. So instead it worked it's way into the human city, dwelling in the strange sewer systems. Now, whereas once the best would feed on hundreds at a time, it was reduced to being a parasite. Every now and then, usually on weekend nights the creature would grab a woman and have it's way with her, using her body to carry it's offspring and siphoning a small amount of energy from her. After months of that it had grown again in size, but still lived in the shadows.

On this particular evening, as Cally wandered, half drunk and half lost though the city in her little red dress and heels, she was unaware of the fact that the monster had marked her as it's next target. As he heels clicked against the pavement, the creature picked up on the sound and the movements through the ground. As she drew nearer it picked up on her scent, the mingling of alcohol and perfume which the creature had identified as the sign of a prime target. The various tendrils and tentacles of the beast began to move, rearranging in the sewers and rising above ground in the dark alley before Cally stepped into it. Rising out of grates, cracks, crevices and any other exit from the sewer, the tentacles clung to the edge of the alley, hiding in the shadows as the young woman approached, ready to lash out and grab her. It had developed a great technique of grabbing the women, a tentacle wrapping around their waists and another over their mouth simultaneously, cutting off their screams as they were dragged kicking and screaming into the darkness. But this time the creature was lucky and Cally turned into the alley, slowly making her way through it.

Had it been the middle of the day, or had Cally been sober she might have noticed the tentacles that lined the alley, ready to pounce. There were tentacles of varying sizes and shapes, some with certain abilities. One of the great things about the leviathan was they way it could control it's shape and it's own evolution. Now, many of the tentacles were smooth and covered in a light layer of slime, pulsing slightly as the creature anticipated it's next victim. As Cally reached the halfway point of the alley the tentacles made their move; a strong thick one wrapped around her waist, while another smaller one covered her mouth. More, smaller tendrils began to wrap around her legs and arms, firmly holding her in place.

Cally was rather prepared to encounter a good number of things and character in this alleyway. It wasn't the first time she travesed a dark alleyway to get home, which was something she did back in her high school days when she would spend all night with her group doing a last minute project to hand in class the following day. She wasn't exactly as studious as she made herself to be in front of her parents, as they were typically excuses to party over at the popular kid's house while his parents were away and make out with a few hot hunks in the school. Typically, she found herself stumbling back home much like this incident. She made a point to keep her purse closer to her body as she walked, knowing that she had some sort of spray she kept handy in situations like this. Outside of pesky and troublesome humans who might heckle her, she was also wary of sewer rats. They had grown to be rather large in this part of the city, perhaps fed by all of the garbage that was being thrown down the pipes and dumpster. She dreaded even hearing one of those rats, much less touching them, as she would probably be spending most of her time in a bath of sanitizer to scrub the germs away.

However, she was wholly unprepared for the tentacled beast that lurked in the darkness, a creature that wasn't any mundane animal or man but something that had been long forgotten by her kind. She was perhaps only worried things known to man when something far greater than her scope of imagination had marked her as a prey and there was little she could do to escape it. The creature had the advantage in the alleyway and Cally was already easy prey as far as potential mates go. As she continued to stumble about in the alleyway and holding her purse closely, the tentacles easily found itself around her with its practiced movements on unsuspecting women such as herself. She gasped at first when the first slimy tentacle roped around her, quickly dampening the little dress she wore that she could sense the moisture making its way to her skin. It was too late by the time she felt its oozing sensation on her body that made her shiver without her realizing it, as she was on high alert when she finally thought that something was awry.

She still thought this was a man, of course, and her first instincts were to reason with it and demand that she be set free. As soon as she tried to open her mouth, the tentacle would cover her mouth immediately as she tried to enunciate the first word. Her secondary plan was to reach for the spray in her purse that would do little good even if she could hand a handle on it. Instead, she found her arms being pulled out of her control and distanced between each other so that she couldn't make a grab of anything. She felt weightless, perhaps in the strangest sense as her legs were taken and held in place, lifted slightly from the floor by something that was so powerful could trap her in almost in an instant. This wasn't a man, but something else she didn't even know. Her scream was muffled in the wet appendage and she began to struggle for dear life as fear finally hit her heart.
