Addison sat on top of the stairs, her cheeks were flushed red, her chestnut brown eyes brimmed with silent tears. Her hands nervously folded on top of her knee’s. She could still hear both of them screaming at each other in her head. It had gotten so bad they had gotten psychically violent. Karen had thrown a lamp screaming out, luckily he blocked it with his forearm. She had watched as he had pinned her to the wall, screaming back, asking her if it was worth it, if he was worth it to destroy everything they had. The words echoed in her young mind I gave you everything, and you’ve been fucking behind my back…. you’re a whore. That was right before things got violent.
Karen had scrambled to get out of his grasp threatening him with the police and a restraining order, she grabbed her keys and stormed out the door but not before turning and saying with tears. “I loved you Riley, I tried my best…. but I cannot love you any more, I want a divorce.” The door shut, bringing a horrible eerily silence into the home.
Addison was leaning into the wall, silently holding noises, holding in sobs. She had lived here for over eight months. She could remember them waiting for her at the air point, hand in hand looking so excited to have her with them. All the pictures they had taken together like a family, they both treated her so well like their own daughter. They had wanted children but wanted to wait while she was finishing school. They seemed like the perfect couple, she adored them, loved them like family.
They had met early on in their first college years, dated and recently got married a year before they wanted to do an exchange program. Riley was a veterinarian while Karen was a nurse going to med school to be a nurse practitioner.
Addison had lived with them, through the good and now the bad. Her own parents were older and she had siblings so she had never seen raw emotion, raw heartbreak. She had suspected early on they were having marital and relationship issues.
