"Stupid, useless, despicable commoners," Gloria muttered as she sat down to work at picking out rocks from her tall boots. "You give them a directive and they'll perform it to the best of their abilities, but when they realize that there's no extra pay nor reward for their duties, they'll disregard you and leave you on the side of the road."
"Your Highness, surely that's not the case," came the voice of her personal bodyguard, Kuro. "The carriage and the horses simply cannot traverse through this land as easily as they could elsewhere. For now we'll have to travel on foot with our supplies, but-"
"They didn't even try to get through. They took one look at the rocks, then to me, and dropped me out on my ass," Gloria growled.
"-But if we hike a few miles inland, we should come to a settlement in the forest that has better roads, and possibly a carriage driver who can assist you."
"I don't want to hike. Make them come to me and have them pick me up, will you Kuro?"
"And leave you all alone with Mercedes and the few bound-by-blood servants we have with us? No, you are coming, Your Highness, and that is final."
Gloria whined at that, but there was nothing else she could do. Back in the Kingdom of Hearthsrock she could have easily pulled a few strings to get what she wanted- a wink here, a flash of leg there, a death-threat wherever else- but here in the thick foliage of the Misty Woods continent she had no power whatsoever. So far from luxury and without a proper cup of tea, Gloria would have never stepped foot in this godforsaken continent had it not been for the words of her royal family and the promise they made for her. The pink-haired princess was on the way to becoming empress of her kingdom, and to fully take command she needed to take a husband- and so far the only worthy one who expressed interest in her was the Naga Prince of the Misty Wood.
The princess had never met the prince, nor had she bothered to hear of him. All that mattered to her was that she had him bound to her so she could take the power that was rightly hers. Alas, she just needed to get over to him- and the stupid lard had his capital right in the middle of the continent! A smart woman would have figured that her family was trying to get rid of her, but Gloria was more bratty, spoiled and conceited than clever. If only she knew what was in store for her...
"Come on Your Highness," chirped the dark elven maid Mercedes. She came up beside Gloria and helped the princess up to her feet after much grumbling from the latter. "The longer we sit around, the longer it will take before you become empress! Don't you want to take the throne?"
"I do want the throne, but not if it means... Oh sod it, you're right. Royalty shouldn't be too proud to not get their hands dirty," Gloria replied.
And with that, the three lovely ladies- plus their few nondescript servants- headed east into the Misty Woods continent; eager to start their adventure.
