The carriage rolled to a rough stop on the cobble stone drive way in front of the estate. Catherine watched her father Daniel get out in a huff and storm across the drive way and up the stairs. Catherine had no idea what this was all about, but she wasn't very happy with her father for pulling her away from her own birthday celebration to go have an argument with his boss and then expect her to just remain in the carriage. The newly sixteen year old leaned her head back against the seat and steamed quietly. Then she picked up the faint music coming from inside, a waltz. Catherine loved to waltz, and she loved parties. Looking out the small windows of the carriage she looked at the manor, it was a beautiful house, much bigger than her own, even though hers was very nice.
Through a big glass window she spotted flashes of dark blues and violets. She realized these were the dresses of some of the dancing women, waltzing with their partners. Catherine thought a moment, then opened the small door to the carriage and stood on the cobblestones. The girl looked down at attire, critiquing if she would be able to enter without embarrassing herself. Her cream colored lace dress with thin straps still looked presentable and her matching heels didn't have any scuffs on them. She pulled up her white cardigan making sure it covered her shoulders then withdrew a compact ivory plated mirror from her pocket . Catherine admired her crystal blue eyes with silver flecks in the mirror and tucked a strand of her straight mahogany brown hair behind her ear. She touched up her red lipstick then began to walk towards the house. She just intended to have a look, then return back to the carriage and wait for her father. As she ascended the stairs leading to the entrance her nerves began to rise and she almost turned back, but something kept telling her she had to go inside. As she entered Catherine wondered for a moment why the carriage driver hadn't stopped her, but that thought quickly faded into the back of her mind.
In the entrance hall it was empty, but standing one either side of the entrance to what she assumed would be the grande hall or ballroom stood two servants, each holding a silver platter, one man, one woman. As she approached she was worried they'd ask for an invitation, but instead they only leaned down offering the contents of their trays. Each had a mask and a smile on their face, like they were expecting her. On the tray too her left sat a frosted cookie with her name on it. The other had a white mask that would cover her eyes, a small rose in the corner of it. Had they been expecting her? Maybe her father and his family had been invited to the ball? Maybe the note her father had received was his boss expressing discontent and their absence.
Slightly uneasy Catherine thanked them, putting the mask on her face, and taking the cookie. The maid spoke in a sweet voice, but her smile made the girl uneasy. "Welcome lady Catherine, we've been expecting you. Please, feel free to, ah, show yourself around. The master has given you the privilege of his entire home for you to explore." She nodded and they opened the doors for her, as she stepped in Catherine was stunned, shimmering flashes of dark blue and violet gowns filled the room as they twirled. Catherine walked around the edge of the room, now self conscious of herself being the only one in white. To her relief nobody seemed to pay her any attention. As she walked up the stairs at the end of the room she took a minute to appreciate the music, the waltz was dark and romantic, she really enjoyed it. She began to walk down the hall and take in the interior, she knew she should go back to her carriage and wait, but she knew her father would be a while, and she'd been given full reign of the gorgeous house.
She wandered for a while eating the cookie as she went and then decided to turn around. Then Catherine realized, she had no idea where she was, she'd gone down what felt like an endless amount of hallways. She turned around and looked around again, that's when she saw it. A single black door with two tiny windows in it. Through them she saw walls of royal blue with black embellishments. Intrigued, Catherine looked around then went up to the door and opened it. She walked in closing the door behind her. She looked around, amazed at the pretty color of the walls. Then she saw him.
He stood there bowing, offering her a rose. One that matched the walls, it was beautiful, she was, afraid, but still that something compelled her. She slowly stepped forward and reached out, then she gently took the rose. Catherine suddenly hissed as the thorns bit into her skin. Just then something overtook her, something dreamy, something, heavy. Her vision went fuzzy, her eyes sagged, she lost her balance and everything went black. [/color]
