No sooner had Mike got home to get settled he got the phone call. They were sending is little sis to come live with him. They thought his “military discipline” would be good for her. It seems she'd been getting into lots of trouble back home. That was an odd concept “back home”. He really could not relate to small town mid-west any more and it made him doubly uncertain about her coming here. He wasn't really that mid-west kid anymore. Virginia Beach was his home now. The Navy had been good to him. Just retire as a YNC or Yeoman Chief Petty Officer., E7. He had a nice little retirement and enough saved that he didn't have to worry about a second job. At least he didn't till now. He even had his condo on the Chesapeake Bay paid off. He got his college degree, BA in Literature and it would be easy enough to get his teaching certificate if it came to that.
But his sister being dumped on him, that was a shocking blow. He hardly knew her. She was born after he joined up so he'd only really got to spend anytime with her when he went home for holidays or other special events. She'd even been sent out to him for a few week when she was smaller just for a visit with her big brother. She was cute and sweet then, but her didn't know about now. She was essentially being banished. And they thought a 38 year old Navy retiree who'd never been married, did know his sister and had no idea bout kids was the perfect place to unload her. He sighed, oh well, she was his sister after all.
And so that's how he found himself sitting in the Norfolk Intl Airport staring at and darkened open door waiting for a girl he didn't really know but was supposed to love, he did love her. She was his sister after all. He just didn't really know her. So he stood there with flowers, yeah cheesy right but what else was he supposed to get her, and a cup of hot coco in his hand because he remembered she loved that, or at least used to. Well, hell, there she was. He walked up to her and for a moment wasn't sure what to do but finally just gave her an awkward hug. “Hey sis, good to see you. Um, here these are for you.”
