Leann Albee hadn't simply torn one of the little tags off the flyer seeking a tutor for the Delta Nu house on campus; she'd taken the whole thing off the student union's cork board. She needed a job desperately - some trick of paperwork had kicked her out of campus housing, and the fleabag motel where she was staying until it got ironed out, while cheap, wasn't so cheap that it didn't make her nervous watching her already meager savings dwindle. She'd assured the sorority girls over email that she was comfortable tutoring all gen ed subjects, though she could only do Spanish as a language, and had fairly open availability - taking AP and dual-credit classes throughout high school not only meant that she'd come in with a solid knowledge base, but that her workload each term was fairly light. So far, anyway, as she worked her way through the prerequisites to get to the upper-division courses of her Secondary Education degree.
She'd been nervous coming here - she so wasn't the sorority type - and had changed clothes three times before settling on grey slacks and a soft pink sweater, professional without being fussy. She'd fidgeted uneasily outside the big front door before the woman she was scheduled to meet, Mia, had let her in.
She'd been a little intimidated by Mia with her makeup and her piercings and her general...whatever-it-was she had that Leann didn't, but she'd warmed to her work as they sat down with the math assignment. The GTA teaching the class apparently wasn't very good, he'd just gotten stuck teaching to keep his funding for his graduate degree, and it meant students were left in the dust.
Leann finished explaining the concept of solving a system by substitution, working her way through the sample problem step by step. She put her pencil down upon finding the answer the book said was correct, turning to Mia as she tucked a strand of brown waves behind her ear.
"Does that make sense now? Do you feel comfortable trying one of the homework problems, and I'll help talk you through?
