Ever since I was young, I never really knew my brother. It might have been our age difference, or maybe I just never took the time to talk to him since he was older. Though, despite all the times we've spent together it still doesn't seem enough. The distance between us is too big of a gap to be considered a sibling relationship. And to make the space even more empty, at 18, he moved away to Europe to excel in his passion and career of art. That never went over well with our parents. They wanted him to get an education, a 'real' education. An education that involved reading textbooks and flooding your mind with useless information that would most likely never be used. In result to their disproval of his dream, we never... ever, visited. He would come to us. I didn't really see it, but as I grew older and more mature, I understood their selfishness and stubbornness.
I've been wanting to visit him for a few years now, but they would always stop me. I can't travel without their permission, and they would never agree on letting me visit. Finally, the day came. The day I was freed from their evil grasp. I was eighteen, and no longer needed parental approval to travel on my own. There were arguments and a lot of yelling, but that didn't stop me. I had kept contact with my brother through basic email and instant messenger, and soon the trip was booked. Though, I was only supposed to go there in a few days, I decided to surprise him. He was excited when I said I wanted to come to visit, a surprise never hurt. Of course, since he was utterly clueless that I was in town, I had to find my own way to his place in a country I didn't recognize the slightest bit. It took me 3 cabs and a handful of directions before I finally arrived, but I arrived nevertheless.
I dragged my luggage behind me. I wasn't a light traveler, especially since I was only staying for a week or so. I carried a purse, a giant suitcase and another large bag (the size of a smaller suitcase) strapped to the top. I looked around hesitantly. I swallowed roughly and nervously before walking up to the door. I hovered my finger over the doorbell. I couldn't get myself to push down on it. My heart pounded. I hadn't seen him in three years, and in those three years, my appearance took a dramatic turn and so did my attitude. I took a deep breath, and finally pushed the bell. I could hear the ringing from outside. I looked around, wondering if I got the right house since the answer was delayed. Finally, the door open, and I couldn't hold back the smile that sprouted on my face.
