Ava slumped against the brick wall, exuding a heavy sigh. Bending to catch her hands on her knees, she focused on her breathing and attempted to slow the beating of her heart; the faster she caught her breath, the sooner she could be on the move. For the better part of the morning, she had been on the run, frantically attempting to keep one step ahead of the abomination that stalked her. She’d caught his interest the day prior, and she hadn’t seemed capable of shaking him since. What was odd about it, was that he never seemed to venture closer - each time, he remained the same distance off, just...watching. But when she moved, he moved, and no matter how she maneuvered through the city, he had the uncanny ability of knowing where she would be.
Shaking the thought, she instead focused on her next move. Straightening, she turned to stare out across the lonely street, and the decrepit city surrounding. One not might have guessed it, but barely a week prior, the setting had painted a different picture - the streets packed with cars, shop fronts open, the rise of voices from passers. It had all ended so suddenly, and where once she worried over bills and studies, they now seemed so trivial. Now, she worried about making it out of the city before the monsters could get their hands on her.
It wasn’t death she needed to fear from the invaders, but rather capture and unseemly actions. Their attack had been sudden and swift - it took them days to slaughter many of the men, and take the women for themselves. It had been a solid day since she had even seen another living person, and she worried if perhaps she was the last standing. It would certainly explain the frequency of her encounters with the monsters, and more notably, a specific abomination. She shuddered to think on what the rest of the city’s fertile women might be enduring, and this thought spurred her into action. Her legs still ached, but she pushed forward regardless, ducking around into an alleyway in hopes of a shortcut.
