Hawk Wilde was a young man of around twenty-four years that had interesting parents. They had been rock music fans and wanted to name their child something cool and unique that not many people had. So they'd chosen Hawk and given him all sorts of birds when he was young to make sure he knew what his name meant. It wasn't really necessary for Hawk was a fairly intelligent person but his parents continued to thrust birds at him nearly every week, coming home with wild ones, tame ones and domestic ones.
At first he was awed by them since they were live things he could play with but as soon as one pecked him he started to realize that each bird was its own being. That was when he started taking care of them and being responsible rather than treating them as play things. His parents were impressed for he had started to do this at an early age when most boys were playing with cars and dinosaurs. Hawk was caring for his birds quite well and soon his parents stopped pestering him about caring for his creatures and simply continued giving him new items.
That made things all the better for Hawk for he didn't have to deal with his parents nagging all the time and he became a lot happier. Once he turned sixteen he got a job as an assistant veterinarian and was so good at it that the current vet decided to take him on with the intention of passing his practice down to him. Hawk was thrilled. The older man had intended on retiring in a few years and had been looking to find someone to replace him and so it was a perfect match. So a few years later when Hawk had turned eighteen the vet decided to test him out with some of the basic responsibilities.
He opened up the place and let Hawk do all the work and take care of the animals and the customers unless there was a large line and then he helped him out. This went on for half a year and then the vet opened up the place and left for the day, making sure Hawk knew his number so he could call if he needed help. That went on for the rest of the year and the following year. By this time Hawk was now eighteen and had just graduated from high school and was looking around at colleges. The vet asked if he wanted to stay and take over the place and take college classes online or if he wanted to go away to college.
Hawk had responded with the former. So the vet gave him the keys to the place and kept an eye on him to make sure he could handle the place and did this for a complete year, upon completion of which he turned over the place to Hawk. Some papers needed to be signed and the keys and paperwork turned over to him but other than that everything was official and the former vet retired happily. Hawk had been nineteen when this had taken place, the youngest vet in history but one of the most capable ones as the city would soon find out.
He'd been a vet now by himself for five years and things seemed to be turning out quite well, he had a steady stream of customers and the animals all seemed to like him. Life was going along perfectly were it not for the fact that he was alone. He'd been alone all his life other than his parents, the vet and his birds and of course the animals at the veterinary. One day he was heading home from the veterinary in the growing dusk when he saw a figure up ahead. At first he thought it was a homeless person lying by the side of the road but when he got closer he could see that it was smaller.
Perhaps a child? Hawk's pace quickened for he didn't want to let a child sleep so near the street, it was dangerous! Yet as he got closer still he saw that it was actually an animal, a small puppy and he rushed over to see if it was hurt. From what he could make out it was a Golden Retriever and quite cute. How could someone abandon a puppy like this? Hawk leaned down to see if it was injured anywhere...
