In a fit of irony, it had been a dark and stormy night. The moon was new, and while the lights of the ship tried to beat back the darkness of night, that only worked so well when it seemed like the liner was moving underwater, the drops of rain a constant pounding roar, a million tiny fists against the armored colossus. But, inside the safety of the ship, well, nothing could go wrong. It was the modern world, where man had triumphed over the wild forces of the world.
And then it happened.
There was a shuddering, a creaking, a brilliant flash of non-light, as the ship lurched, slamming to a sudden and vicious halt. Bodies where thrown, people screamed, and others? Others vanished, here one moment, gone the next. Windows, mirrors, televisions and computer screens, not to mention the glasses, wrought lacerating injuries, even as silverware and sharper edges made the screams of surprise into sobs of agony.
This? This is your life. This is the world around you. This is the corpse of the Dreams of the Sea.
Okay, so that's the fluff/background for a little idea that has been with me for a while now. Most accurately, a little shipwreck survival game, with some elements of horror and exploration mixed in. There would be danger, as you struggle to survive in a world unlike any your character may be comfortable with.
The exact system this will use? I'm going to steal elements from D&D 3.5 and D20 Modern/Apocalypse, because frankly, building an entire thing from scratch..... yeah no. While the classes (WIP) will be original, the basic d20 system will be used. With of course, a few.... modifications to the crafting/profession/knowledge rules.
So, here is the preview of the 'Basic' classes, or the ones that you can start off as.
Athlete; You worked either alone, or with a team, honing your body for competition. Some of those skills can be surprisingly useful at the moment, though you may not exactly be playing. (Physical Types)
Academic; Students, Lawyers, Teachers and Scholars, the Academic is a bastion of facts, and excels when they have sources of information at your fingertips. (Information/Knowledge Types)
Administrator; Politicians, Managers, and leaders of all stripes generally have one thing in common. They are skilled at managing resources.... or hoarding the best for themselves. (Social Types)
Rouge; Ah, the loveable fellow that could pick pockets, sneak into places, or just hack into your database, given the current times. Not just a thief, but many that wish to avoid notice? Well, you DON'T know them. (Sneaky buggers)
Military; Not always confined to base, and some nations require a basic level of military service, the armed forces breed discipline and the ability to meet danger with a proportionate response.... by getting rid of the danger. (Combat Types)
Now, you may be wondering, given the fact that you start in a modern setting mean no magic/psionics? Yes and no actually. Now, most people will have 6d6b3 to decide their ability scores. If you choose to take the Eccentric template, you'll be taking 4d6b3, along with penalties to Wisdom.
Note, on religion. Some of it will work. Some of it will not. Oddly enough, taking the Devoted feat, may help improve your chances. Divine magic/Prayers will work considerably different then Arcane.
Still, will be working on the classes and template, and editing them in as they are done, over the weekend, but feel free to shoot me something.
