Dan and Andrew stepped out of the car in front of the theatre. Dan passed the keys to the valet who stepped into it and pulled it away to the parking lot. The two men then walked into the building, side by side. They smiled and greeted the people around them, many of whom they had come to know over the three years they had been members of the theatre's support organisation. They had made some genuine friends and plenty of great contacts for their careers. Both of them were quite successful already at the age of thirty. Most people would have said that they had everything they wanted in life, but that wasn't entirely true.
They mingled with the crowd in the foyer until it was time to go in to take their seats. They had their usual seats on one of the balconies on the right side of the theatre. When they reached the balcony they hugged their friends who had the other seats and sat side by side. They relaxed, Andrew reminding Dan to put his phone on silent. They settled in, ready to enjoy the ballet. The time at the theatre was always a relaxing experience for the two of them, as well as time together. They had shared their love of performance arts since they were in the drama club together in high school. They had both ended up working in the art world. Andrew was an author with a strong following. Dan was an art dealer, buying and selling many different things for the gallery that his mother had owned for many years. He would eventually take over the business and was already the lead dealer.
The lights dimmed and an older woman walked out on stage to introduce the show. Soon enough the men were lost in a world of music and precise movement across the stage. Dancers in perfect harmony with each other and with the music. They found themselves holding hands as they watched the spectacular performance. They spent the intermission mingling again and managed to speak with the director of the ballet troupe, arranging a back stage tour after the show. The rest of the show was better than the first half and both men joined the standing ovation immediately and were among the last to retake their seats.
They took their time leaving their seats and made the turn toward the backstage door. They were met there by the director, shaking hands and stepping into the back along with a few others who were being given the tour as well. They were all excited to meet the dancers who had put on an amazing show. They went room by room, meeting a few of the performers, shaking their hands, and congratulating them on their success, wishing them luck in their future shows and their careers.
