Need help (5e DnD

I didn't see a sub thread that this will fit in so if it's not the right place the people who can feel free to move it.

Just found out my old game group is starting up and we are running 5e DnD but I've never made a toon. any one have experience and want to give me some tips?

Never made a toon so help understanding all the new rules would be a starting point

What D&D types do you allready know?

5th editon is mechanicaly similar to 3.5/pathfinder, but the modifiers to d20 rolls are much smaller. Instead of base attack and skill ranks, you just have proficiency and proficiency modifier (determined by level.) There's not a lot of multiclassing compared to 3.5.

At first level, you choose race, background, and class. (To confuse you, backgrounds are listed after classes.) Enter the information for each choice, including a few options you'd make for each choice.
